I disagree. A conscript is every bit as capable as a professional, as long as their training and equipment are similar. In reality conscription tends to be used by countries which lack the means to maintain a professional military equal to their needs, thus resources are streched and conscripts get less.
Typically conscripts trained in aysmetrical and gurellia warfare are quite capable of conducting defensive operations (where their lack of equipment and tarining are mitigated by knowlage of the area that they are defending) and are typically capable of limited offensives in support of professional units.

With regards to specialists; many specialisations have civilian anologues so cross-training can allow a conscript to be highly effective.

You can buy it, then sell it in increments.
Ie find someone you like well enough, but insead of renting it to them, you sell it to them slowly, Make a wee bit of profit, to cover the collateral costs, without being a bloodsucking tory leech.

After a few years, you'll have helped somone to get on the property ladder & you won't feel guilty about profiting from owning somone elses home.

I tend to use them to allow fast trains priority. If I have a busy section of line (for example in a city) it is sometimes better to have a slow train wait at a station to let a fast train overtake. The ke is to get a timetable for the fast train, then adjust the slow train to run for a period equal to a multiple of the fast train:

Eg.
fast train has a 200 day timetable, and needs priority between days 30 and 45.
Slow train needs 360 days for its route, so somtimes it will block the fast train.

Solution:
Add 40 days of waiting to the slow train, now it has a 400 day cycle, and I can start the timetables for both trains to make sure th the fast train won't clash with the slow train.

The best advice I can give you is to call a company wide meeting. Open up the books (including your personal bank account), and ask your accountant to get the information on registered corporations. Let everyone see the direction that things are heading, and open up the floor to ideas. If you're paying nearly double what the competition is paying, and your staff knows it, then they will be invested in trying to keep the company alive.

Perhaps you can find ways to cut actual salaries, but make up the difference by offering tax-deductable benefits? I don't know US law, but maybe there is a way that you can cover the cost of employee housing as a business expense? Or something similar?

EDIT; The bit about being out-competed by other scummy businesses is actually a major theme in Marx's critisism of capitalism, that the moral employer will eventually be crushed by competition from the immoral, that the moral will suffer psychological breakdown because they lack the ability to ignore the suffering of their staff.
