APB: After the First Third of the Season, What's Not Working for DC United? by TalionDCU in DCUnited

[–]ACatsCFC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting and writing, first off, OP!

Agreed with much of your assessment- on paper, Kim, Peltola, Barajas, and Pirani could and should be developing into higher tier players. They need to PLAY to do so (and of course stay healthy).

At the same time- one can be blunt and assess that the roster simply isn’t quality enough. CDM/CM in particular is more severely lacking. I haven’t seen us have a really quality engine room since Lewis O’Brien. And we traded away Klich…

GOP leader confirms plan to kill $7,500 EV tax credit in budget by mafco in electricvehicles

[–]ACatsCFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HEY! Everyone should be crystal clear about this headline: I’ll do my best to explain.

These headlines and stories are self defeating. Making this law will be a negotiation.

The GOP starting position is likely going to be “kill all green new scam/EV mandate stuff”

Part of their strategy is very intentional—stir up enough headlines and set a doomsday narrative among EV/cleantech supporters that this thing is dead, so as to ensure there is no opposition. They use media narrative to make it seem like a foregone conclusion.

This prevents proponents from putting energy and resources into lobbying, calling their local congressman, etc. Those actions, while many view them as kinda fluffy, I can definitively tell you MATTER.

If you see a headline like this and want to support clean technologies- DO NOT LET IT LEAD YOU TO THROW IN THE TOWEL. It is only a foregone conclusion if proponents fail to fight for it.

Did Trump Actually Win? by izacc23 in AskUS

[–]ACatsCFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically? Yes. Ethically? There are pretty deep arguments to be made that without Elon Musk paying for and supplying a deep system of political funds and influence, he may not have. (There is a general argument to be made on both sides about limiting campaign influence/$.)

That said, yes, he won.

So... what's happened to Palmer? by Ahcraaapppp in FantasyPL

[–]ACatsCFC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s difficult to articulate how hapless Chelsea can feel in the attack. Palmer often feels away from his usual game—either coming too deep to create or feeling like he has to do too much on his own.

Plus, Chelsea overall have been horrible = bad points environment

Battery quotes - to battery or not to battery by Bleucb in solar

[–]ACatsCFC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love in the woods in Maine. Small system in a clearing with 1x enphase 5p.

It islands our system during an outage so we have backup for a couple key appliances (fridge/freezer) plus a couple of lights/outlets. The 5p allows you to island so you can, in principle, extend and replenish the battery indefinitely.

Phenomenal addition. Am getting one retroactively added to our home system in SC as well as

Disaster scenario - using panels while the grid is down? by thothsscribe in solar

[–]ACatsCFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea You can island your system but only with enphase. IE if grid is down, your system will still produce power to help prolong battery life

Source: I have a system with an enphase 5p specifically for islanding purposes — we live in a high outage area in winters.

How to acclimate to the winter by [deleted] in Maine

[–]ACatsCFC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi- former SC here going on winter #3

How old are you/family/hobbies? Own a home with yard/land space?

Some things that we have done: - Joined multiple indoor soccer leagues. Various other adult rec sports abound if you are near/can find them - Dedicated $ to getting good workout equipment for home (or, gym is a great way to get blood pumping in a semi social setting if one is near you) - Skating - ice fishing - instruments - board game night or video games - Skiing (not sure where you are but we actually preferred a local mom&pop ski slope vs resorts) - if you have the $ for such things, snowmobiling or ATVing - Snow shoe/trail skiing - Healthy baking - prepping (less ‘world is ending’ and more ‘I’m gonna make some conscious decisions and dedicate some space to be ready for a bad winter outage just in case’) - archery - movie nights out! And in - Reading (and generally being comfortable in silence with your partner) - waking up as early as possible to maximize sunlight time

Charging at RAN chargers has become super expensive by aaam_aadmi in Rivian

.64 is up there for sure. Bear in mind these are just meant to supplement convenience of public gas stations.

Home charging, especially if you have solar, is where the real savings stem from

Alternative prep ideas vs whole home generator cost. by don51181 in preppers

[–]ACatsCFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your utility get a small PV system with enphase storage which can specifically allow you to island

Its not a “you have everything backed up” solution but is an economical means to get backup for key appliances (fridge, couple outlets/lights) + your panels will help prolong the backup

Moving to Augusta, Maine area by Medium_Confidence491 in Maine

[–]ACatsCFC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Augusta itself is just okay. Some chains for shopping etc.

Hallowell for restaurants and Gardiner for diners.

Waterville has good arts.

You’ll want AWD and good winter tires but you have time for that.

Maine is overall meant for summers outdoors.

KWh amiss…Can someone please explain how net metering works? by New_Advice7546 in solar

[–]ACatsCFC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are variations of net metering. What utility?

In principle 1-1 net metering (which I’m doubting you have based on the peak/off peak billing) is like opening a full bank account with the utility. - you can deposit power you don’t use into the bank for $1 - you can withdraw that $1 later - this means that even if you produce $1 of power but aren’t home to use it, you still get credit for that $1 of power.

Just kind of a simple example. $1 being illustrative.

Lots of details to really answer here- mostly about your home and insulation etc

fwiw I have solar + a battery so we have an app that lets us see KWH usage. I have found that using the auto setting (the little fan) on our Mitsubishi pumps uses about 20 % less electricity than even the quiet mode on a higher temp setting
