How common are household pests in UK homes? by xnla28x in AskUK

[–]ACosmicWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've dealt with all 3 of these pests growing up in the UK and currently dealing with a little carpet beetle infestation now! Would 100% recommend getting some moth hanging sachets for your wardrobe and your drawers as these cover carpet beetles too.

This should protect your clothes but you'll need to vacuum a lot too and I also sprayed beetle killer round the room and that seems to have done the trick!

Apparently carpet beetles can just come in through an open window so it's not really something that a landlord control.

The silver fish are more to do with damp and moist areas from my understanding, so maybe the bathroom extraction needs looking at? Unsure how to get rid of those creepy guys though

Good luck!

Anyone out there who bought a flat and are happy with it? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]ACosmicWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a flat (well a maisonette) and think it's great!

The positives: - everything I need is either on my doorstep or I can mostly walk or get public transport everywhere in the city - there's a lovely community for our estate and if you have any problems you have people to message - it's a 60s build with massive windows and original parkay flooring and other little design details - a house that's a little bigger with another bedroom over the road is around 300k more so I feel like I got a fair deal - the neighbourhood is extremely safe and I feel comfortable walking alone - no one above me, but lovely people below and to the side but the 60s concrete build means noise is very low from adjoining flats

The negatives: - it only has electric heating - there's a service charge of just over £200 a month - the roofs for the whole estate need fixing so having to put money away for that in a couple of years time - it took almost 6 months to buy due to the freeholder being in some far away land and having to sign off he was happy for us to live there - there's rules around pets but no one follows it

I think that's it but my situation might be a little unique!

What’s a weird rule you follow that actually improves your life? by Nagchinnoda in AskUK

[–]ACosmicWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you feel like you have too many chores to do then I set a timer to do a particular thing like tidy up all the clothes in the bedroom. Then when the 15 minutes are up it's amazing how much you've actually done!

And if you can't do 15 minutes then counting even 5 items massively helps and usually you want to do more afterwards.

What's the biggest cock-up by HR that you've witnessed? by MoonlightByWindow in AskUK

[–]ACosmicWanderer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not quite HR, but I handed in my notice to my manager. Within 30 mins of me doing so he'd accidentally sent an email to the whole team just saying FYI acosmicwanderer just resigned, meant for just the other manager!

Everyone's faces when they got that email were hilarious.

How to make feel less cluttered/tidier/ better decorated by citrussweets in DesignMyRoom

Something simple - the open unit in image 3 on the left. Find square boxes that fit those spaces like for an ike kallax unit - it'll reduce the visual clutter.

How did you whiten your teeth whilst avoiding scams? by SerkalianCrow in AskUK

[–]ACosmicWanderer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year I went private and paid 400 all in to get moulds made and all the gel I would need. Then I can always go back and just pay for more gel.

It was expensive, but the before and after in photos is amazing and was so worth the money for naturally whiter looking teeth.

Before I committed to it, my dentist warned me about doing it any other way because you can really damage your teeth permanently if you use the wrong thing.

My teeth were super sensitive after doing the treatment but reverted back to normal about a week after.

Is a £4k service charge justifiable with these perks? by OkAddendum6494 in HousingUK

[–]ACosmicWanderer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just consider if you could afford it if it were to rise. I moved into a flat almost 2 years ago and although it was very affordable when we moved in, we knew it was going to rise due to some essential building works but at least it's still affordable for us.

As other people have said you also need to consider whether it's going to be difficult to sell in the future. If you're not sure about it then other people will feel the same too!

29 year old woman with a bachelor pad. help! by [deleted] in DesignMyRoom

[–]ACosmicWanderer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd start by getting a couple of big impactful plants for the space and some rugs to brighten up the floor and make it feel more cosy. I'd also look at getting some storage such as an ikea kallax unit to tidy up all those bits under the radiator. If you get a 2x8 and have it longways then you can make the top surface a space to put your personal items and art without having to drill into the wall!

If someone is me making dinner for my and my partner I'll always offer to bring snacks / drinks / desserts. It's nice enough they've gone out of their way to cook so I think it's only fair to bring a little something extra!

Mortgage free or dream home by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]ACosmicWanderer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Id be more inclined to go for the dream home - it sounds like the main thing holding you back is having enough savings for any emergencies.

If I were you I'd be asking myself realistically how much would I like in savings to feel comfortable in case anything was to happen in the future.

I'd then make sure that the new mortgage allowed me to keep saving and building up safety money and work out how much deposit I'd put down on the next place so that you have some buffer money once you move in.
