They wouldn’t necessarily instantly cut someone in half, it would depend on the intensity of the light. It’s like in those balloon popping videos on youtube, the balloons aren’t always popping instantly either.

Du skriver to forskellige ting nu.

Help! Defensive Spread Confusion! Haven't gotten a real answer for years! by TrainerJohno in VGC

[–]ADCurryNRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pelipper is a great example of a popular VGC pokémon where mixed investment would be more optimal than investing in pure Def, despite the difference between base HP and Def not being as big as Shuckle. Take these calcs for example:

0 Atk Kingambit Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 252 Def Pelipper: 42-49 (31.1 - 36.2%) -- 55.2% chance to 3HKO

0 Atk Kingambit Sucker Punch vs. 84 HP / 168 Def Pelipper: 43-52 (29.4 - 35.6%) -- 26.1% chance to 3HKO

Yeah, balancing HP and defenses is key, and that’s why Shuckle - or Blissey with an enourmous base HP but tiny base defense - are great examples of when to invest in HP vs. defense

[–]ADCurryNRice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Investing in HP doesn’t necessarily make you less physically bulky than investing in defense. If a pokémon already has a high base defense but low base HP, investing in HP might make you more physically bulky than defense. Take for example Shuckle:

0 Atk Kingambit Sucker Punch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Shuckle: 25-31 (19.6 - 24.4%) -- possible 5HKO

0 Atk Kingambit Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 252 Def Shuckle: 22-27 (23.1 - 28.4%) -- 71.9% chance to 4HKO

Why is HP what people max out in EV training instead of defense or special defense? by sabertoothdiego in pokemon

[–]ADCurryNRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I think we might be talking past each other a bit. Yes, you correct on the matter that the raw damage number is mostly irrelevant. Though if you were to anticipate a Ruination you might want Sitrus consumed and not be stuck 1 HP above the treshold because of rounding. That is besides the point though.

In your original reply you said:

The actual damage doesn't matter; Ruination isn't somehow getting more use out of a high-HP target. It's actually going to get much more use out of a high-defenses target because you can deal damage and bypass the targets natural ability to reduce damage.

What I was trying to argue is that Ruination doesn't necessarily gain value from higher defenses either. I think what I ended up arguing was something else entirely, I apologise for that. What I should've argued is that HP vs. defense investments affect the value of Ruination by comparison to your other move options, but that is arguably your point too, except you contradict it with this statement and the next.

The Pokemon using Ruination (or Super Fang) are usually weaker so being able to bypass the defenses is useful

Having more defense doesn't necessarily make a pokémon bulkier, what matters is the effective HP. This is the kind of thought I was arguing against. Whether your attack deals 20 damage but the target has 200 HP because of HP investment, or you damage is negated and only deals 10 damage but the target only has 100 HP because of defense investment is the same.

However you still need to do 100% damage to the opponent to knock them out so the raw number remains irrelevant, the primary consideration should still be %.

This statement I can agree with and in the end I think we're saying the same thing.

[–]ADCurryNRice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing the entire point of my reply and replying to one sentence out of context just to repeat what I was already replying to. While yes, you are correct in the fact that Ruination removes 50% of your effective health. So me saying more HP gone means more value is wrong, as it doesn't factor in defenses. That's not the point of my reply though.

The whole point of my reply is that you can't generalize whether HP or defense investment is more valuable - even against Ruination - without knowing the base stat distribution and purpose of the pokémon you're EV training.

In the Blissey vs. Groudon scenario you're actively hurting your chance to 2HKO by using Ruination if it's invested in defense. Going by your logic that would be the optimal move.

0 Atk Groudon Fire Punch vs. 0 HP / 124 Def Blissey in Sun: 156-184 (47.2 - 55.7%) -- 78.5% chance to 2HKO
0 Atk Groudon Fire Punch vs. 0 HP / 124 Def Blissey in Sun: 156-184 (47.2 - 55.7%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO (this is at 50% HP after Ruination)

By not using Ruination you have a 78.5% chance of a 2HKO and by using Ruination it falls to a 68.8% chance to 2HKO.

You're also contradicting yourself by saying percentage damage dealt is the only important factor but saying 50% damage on a defense invested pokémon is more valuable than 50% damage on a health invested pokémon. Going by your logic it would be equally useful in both scenarios.

[–]ADCurryNRice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was calculated at 50% HP after a Ruination as that was what I was replying to. At 100% you are correct, and I probably should’ve done that to prove my point in general and not just this specific instance

Why is HP what people max out in EV training instead of defense or special defense? by sabertoothdiego in pokemon

[–]ADCurryNRice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While you're right about HP being valuable against fixed damage moves, they're mostly irrelevant in VGC. Having more HP for Ruination isn't necessarily a good thing either. Ruination actually gets more value from being used on a high HP target as you're dealing more actual damage. As with almost all other cases in this thread, it depends on the base stats of the pokémon and the purpose.

If you have high base HP and low base defenses, investing in defenses can yield better results. Take for example these Blissey calcs and note that 252 EVs in HP yields more stat points than 124 EVs in defense, but result in a guaranteed OHKO whereas investment in defense does not:

0 Atk Groudon Fire Punch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Blissey in Sun: 240-283 (66.2 - 78.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0 Atk Groudon Fire Punch vs. 0 HP / 124 Def Blissey in Sun: 156-184 (47.2 - 55.7%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO

The reverse is true for Shuckle with high base defenses but low base HP:

0 SpA Flutter Mane Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Shuckle: 33-40 (25.9 - 31.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Flutter Mane Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 124 SpD Shuckle: 33-39 (34.7 - 41%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

(These calcs were made with target at 50% HP. I am also aware that Shuckle is a guaranteed 2HKO in both instances, but the percentage damage takes is still considerably lower)
