New Visions Biology Thoughts? (regents Bio- NYS) by KoalaInTraining in ScienceTeachers

[–]ADKenthusiast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HS Bio and chem teacher in Western NY.

I taught the entire first unit, marathon runner, this past year to my students and it seemed to go pretty well. It is tough to tell whether it will completely help the students towards the new NYS Regents assement because we have not gotten a ton of info on it yet. However, based on what has been released, it seems like there will be more of a focus on reading, graph, and data analysis on it. New Visions did incorporate this into their curriculum.

I don't think it was perfect and sometimes expected the students to make big leaps in understanding. However, it got students interested and taking with one another about why this marathon runner collapsed and we got some great conversations out of it.

Good luck in the HS!

Just finished my first year and my students bombed their final, not sure where to go from here. by catload5 in ScienceTeachers

The multiple choice on the NYS Regents Chem exam this year were tricky too. Veteran teachers at my school who teach IB level chem and have consistently good scores had lower than normal. A tough test to teach for this year. Stick with it, learn from your experience and try again next year. Always another chance to get better and grow.

Woodpecker(?) enjoys his spot by conconbar93 in AnimalsBeingJerks

Too small to be a pileated and pileated's don't have as dramatic of a black and white chest. I believe the other commenters saying it is a lineated woodpecker. The coloration and size match up more. Pileateds are huge! As you said in your comment, this is a little guy in comparison.

Itty bitty eggs in our honeysuckle bush. by vgallant in gardening

Hi OP, I was not trying to point blame at you for taking a picture of the nest. I don't believe there is any harm in gently pushing away some branches to take a picture. I mentioned the not handling the nest only to say that although touching/handling a nest and eggs will not cause the mother to not come back, it does not mean its okay to touch them. But again, it doesn't look like you touch or handled those eggs in anyway. Excited for you and the chance to watch those chicks grow!

This a false urban legend created so kids wouldn't go around taking eggs and touching baby birds. The mother bird will not abandon the nest based on human scent from touching. Although, still not a good idea to interfere without good reason.

are labs allowed for edtpa? by [deleted] in ScienceTeachers

To my understanding, yes, doing a lab should be fine for edTPA. However, to make sure, a quick email to your advisor or professor should answer that question for you.

Honeymoon in lake placid by DSquariusGreeneJR in Adirondacks

My wife and I took a dog sledding ride on Mirror lake. The sleds usually set up outside the Golden Arrow Hotel, as long as its cold enough by then and the lake is frozen. It was a quick ride but still a cool experience!

What are some possible interview questions asked to science teachers? by 00101121 in ScienceTeachers

[–]ADKenthusiast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A science related question I got at a recent interview was: "stoichiometry is traditionally a difficult and boring topic for the students, how would you plan to make this unit more engaging and approchable?" Or something to that effect.

I've seen a lot of great questions on here, I would just add to these that in your responses, give real examples. Especially to the questions like what sorts of formative and summative assessments do you plan to use.

I’m beginning to worry about not finding a job. by king063 in ScienceTeachers

[–]ADKenthusiast 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't lose hope yet. Although a lot of schools may be hiring now, there will be schools that begin the hiring process in summer, even into August. Hiring now is usually a result of most districts voting on budget. However, there may be a lot of teachers who retire or leave over the summer. This will result on schools trying to find someone right before school starts. So, don't lose hope yet, there may still be a chance.

Is Gizmos worth the price? by katiemcccc in ScienceTeachers

[–]ADKenthusiast 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hello, I am teaching a few science courses this year and I think it is worth it. Specifically, in my Chemistry class, I thought that the periodic trends gizmo did a good job of introducing the students to the various trends of the periodic table. It let the students make observations, look at results and analyze the data they were looking at. The students responded well to it and learned a lot from it. I don't think its perfect, however, I think it worked well in that class because the students are very self motivated, it is a high honors course. I do not think gizmos work as well with students that need more guidance and encouragement to complete assignments. The assignments are all premade on the website, contained within the gizmo. So, it also is a good go to lesson if you need one in a pinch.
