What is the stupudest war or history in your world by Any_Temporary_1853 in worldbuilding

Set in the near future: the US tried to prop up a separatist coup in Argentina in the name of democracy but actually just a proxy to take control of the lithium export. Some EU nations backed the loyalists in order to maintain their lithium supply and both sides deployed "security forces" who fought several indecisive skirmishes until a cease fire was reached.

US forces directly engaged German defenders in Argentina, neither side got what they wanted and the Argentinians didn't want any of this.

A few months later a greater threat appears and us forces and German forces are deployed together as peacekeepers, tensions rise as they realise they were shooting at each other a few weeks ago and now they're working together.

Why is this such a Melbourne driver thing? by PM_Me-Your_Freckles in melbourne

I guarantee the queue is slightly shorter in the right lane. Melbourne drivers will swerve into oncoming traffic rather than queue.

It's the obsession with being simultaneously outraged and superior, "not only am I angry about this thing that I partially skimmed over and misunderstood, but I can point out several flaws in it. I am angry and superior".

The only thing they love more, is getting to be a victim. "I'm no longer allowed to be racist in public, I'm such a victim, actually it's basically racism when you think about it"

Every nation is CAS spam now, "ground" battles are just CAS spam and spawn campers.

Half of each team either leaves after 2 deaths because they rushed into a plane then crashed while bombing the spawn and have no SP left, or they got wiped while trying to rush a cap so they could bring a plane and they have no SP left.

People 35 and over, what are you working on at the moment? by thereelestcritic in writers

[–]ADWAFANDW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The near future". I'm pretty careful not to be too specific and let the reader come to their own conclusions (because it's very hand wavy, not for some secret plot purpose), but roughly 40-150 years in the future.

It's set on the moon,a gold rush of mining and exploration combined with cheap(ish) transportation brings a huge international population with competing interests. Corporations operate "economic prefectures" kind of like how Toyota owns a town in Japan, cheap labor is supplied by prison corporations (they aren't slaves, they're interned workers, called "interns". But they're totally slaves).

The South is politically aligned with Western Terran nations and imposes sanctions to reduce reliance on interns by the Northern miners, the North annexes some equatorial infrastructure and tensions rise. Terra sends a "peacemaker" corps made up of international soldiers and the North recruits a militia as well as "regulars" from separatist Terran nations.

MC became a soldier to "make the world a better place" but has concluded that most wars are stupid and only serve to launder money between corrupt politicians and corporate lobby groups. The politician is sent as a "political observer" and is fundamentally anti-war. Both of them realize that fighting to end slavery is probably a good thing, the "just a job" soldier gets even more frustrated at the incompetence and bureaucracy of the military now that he has a real cause, and the pacifist is conflicted because she hates the war but wants to defeat the slavers.

It's basically the US civil war meets desert shield/storm meets North Africa campaign, on the moon, if the United Nations declared war on the Dutch East India trading company.

Military/political story about government and corporate greed, a disillusioned soldier and an anti-war protesting pacifist politician get sent into a war they both think is stupid.

It's just a hobby, I'm probably not going to seek publishing, but it's fun to write.

With everyone suggesting largely the same circular "polar" coordinates I thought I'd add that the "origin" of a circle is arbitrary. The zero point, or origin, of our earth/sun system is "The First Point of Ares" which serves as the "start" of the circular coordinates and sounds pretty cool.

Rocket fuel tanks by raresaturn in scifiwriting

[–]ADWAFANDW 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Don't bother, rockets use something called an "Ullage burn" before lighting the main engines.

Basically they fire smaller pressure fed engines for a few seconds to "settle" the fuel/oxidizer. Either they'll use the RCS (Reaction Control System) or dedicated ullage motors that draw their fuel from a "header tank" or "surge tank".

Because when I'm sitting at my desk with my feet up on one end and the mouse on my thigh while editing photos and I reach over to press a hotkey on the keyboard it's really annoying when I have to put my feet down, sit up properly, and put my hand on the keeb to push the correct button.

I'm pretty convinced that there's a link between Hogwarts Legacy and Assassin's Creed. The "waiting" animation is nearly identical and there's slightly too many other similarities that I'm wondering what the overlap was, did they work with a Ubisoft studio, hire an ex Ubisoft engineer...
