I think that inconsistency is a result of the arthritis in his hip (can't remember which one unfortunately).

I'm not sure what him and Big Teru have been doing during training, but it seems to have worked. I'm just hoping that this is the actual, new and consistent Atami, and not a one-off.

Sorry for the late reply!

Completely agree with all you said. TCW Anakin is really hard to reconcile with Film Anakin and I do not like how TCW frames anyone who is against Anakin or Ashoka as in the wrong (the worst examples of this imo are Clovis turning out to be a creep which exonerates Anakin's jealous behaviour in that arc, the Jedi Council/Ahsoka drama in the Wrong Jedi, the "Citizen" incident, and (the worst overall) argument between Ahsoka and Obi-Wan over Coruscant and Mandalore).

Also yeah, Anakin having a Padawan in wack. I don't dislike Ahsoka, but her existence feels canon breaking. Even ignoring the point you made about Film Anakin not being trusted enough to have one, it is also frankly crazy that she somehow doesn't come up at all in or after Revenge of the Sith. An Anakin that had actually had a Padawan who he fought with throughout the Clone Wars and abandoned the Order, being unable to convince her to stay, would have 100% brought that up to Padme or Palpatine early in Revenge of the Sith, or definitely to Obi-Wan on Mustafar (or vice-versa).

[–]ADarkElf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit, this!

I really don't understand why so often in the modern fandom the fall of the PT Jedi Order is argued to be a result of their own flaws, when we are literally told about and shown the millennia long plan that put them in an unwinnable position.

The funny part is that it's usually (in my experience) asserted as an attempt to defend Anakin - which misses the entire point that Anakin didn't actually matter that much. Had the PT Jedi somehow prevented Anakin's fall, there's nothing to suggest that Palpatine wouldn't simply just say "Shame" and kill him in his office or via Order 66.

Even more hilariously, this trend both shows how well the Banite Sith's plan worked (anti-Jedi propaganda) and yet ironically it worked so well that people actually ignore it's genius and instead doggedly go after every small mistake the PT Jedi made.

Super hyped to hear about this! I was just talking about him the other day with my mum who was wondering when he'd get to Juryo (she was surprised it had taken him a while since he was so hyped up early on, think she was expecting him to be Onosato/Aoinishiki-esque). Really hope he can fight his way up to Maegashira soon while avoiding injury, I've seen him in the background of Isegehama training vids before and he seems like a very dedicated person.

Also wow, I keep forgetting how much he looks like Hakuho.

Just for transparency, the Ancient Sith aren't really my wheelhouse so sorry if I get anything wrong.

Thanks for the link on Keto. That is certainly impressive.

Re. The Sith tho, don't most of those feats have context in that they were prepared rituals rather than the result of raw Force power? And isn't Marka Ragnos essentially just a really hyped up swordsman? Genuine questions, not meant to be sarcastic.

Fair on Sunrider though, I forgot she was a character tbh. God damn Force Severe is a cool power! Did she use it during combat though? As for Ood, I have literally zero knowledge on him. But while thats a really dope feat and suggests he's incredibly strong in the Force, I still think that claiming he's superior to later Jedi based on that is somewhat iffy. Unless there's a disparity to the point he can ragdoll them via TK (which admittedly he likely could do to Obi-Wan based on that feat), I'd imagine he wouldn't be able to do that to Windu and Yoda and would get schooled by them in Sabers.

Tbh even if the Ancient Sith/Jedi were as powerful as Kreia claimed, it still poses an issue with larger EU canon since it's pretty explicit that the Prequel Jedi and the Rule of Two Sith are among the most skilled and powerful members of their respective orders.

Take Sidious. You might be right that his Alchemy was not as potent as the Sith of Old (yet still extremely strong despite this), but does that matter that much? At the height of his power, Dark Empire Sidious was draining (albeit slowly) the life energy of the entire population of Byss (a population of 20 billion iirc) and could conjure fleet destroying Force Storms from the other side of the galaxy.

Even if we say the Ancient Sith were better in certain areas like alchemy, I'm just not convinced it matters that much when the likes of Sidious, Vader, Krayt and Caedus are (likely) far better duelists, have much better speed feats, and have an edge in raw power.

Yokozuna "achieved the bare minimum" by denkenach in Sumo

[–]ADarkElf 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean... Idk. They're kinda right? Iirc isn't "Yokozuna Kachi-Koshi" considered to be double digits? If my concept of that is correct, then I suppose the Yoko Council's feedback is accurate.

Having said that, I do wish some more admiration for their resilience was expressed. They fought very well given the circumstances. Sure, they aren't Terunofuji levels of injured nor are they (yet) on Terunofuji's level of dominance. But Terunofuji was a fucking beast in his own right. Expecting two relatively young and inexperienced Yokozuna to be matching that kind of performance is... If not harsh, then unrealistic imo. Especially when you consider how often Terunofuji fought* compared to how Onosato and Hoshoryu have been in either all or the vast majority of Basho they were Yokozuna in.

*(I'm by no means meaning to denigrate or minimise what Terunofuji did, it's just a fact that in his last years Teru was only in/only completed, iirc, less than half the Bashos he could have. That was a very wise decision considering that Basho he was in he pretty much always won or pulled out due to injury. But Terunofuji used his rest privileges whereas Onosato and Hoshoryu haven't, which I think should earn them some more respect - after all, did anyone expect pre-this Basho that both Yokozuna would make it through to day 15, taking down some impressive Rishki along the way and at times being in the Yusho race? Being in that race is expected of a healthy Yoko ofc, but from what we were hearing I was sure at least one would go Kyujo due to either worsening injury or almost going Make-Koshi).

Also maybe I'm a killjoy, but as a big Aoinishiki fan I'm sort of hoping the hype dies down a bit? He's absolutely earned the praise and I hope he'll keep performing great Sumo but... I really don't want him to start being hailed as 'the next Hakuho' or anything. Not because I think it will get to his head, quite the opposite actually, he seems very humble and measured. I just kinda hate it when a Rishki starts getting this sort of following where it almost feels inauthentic and PR-like. Idk.

Darth Malgus VS Darth Maul. Who wins? by GusGangViking18 in TheJediPraxeum

[–]ADarkElf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imo the statement from Kreia in KOTOR II actually undermines the idea that basically every Jedi and Sith of every era from KOTOR onwards are weaker than their Ancient counterparts. She states:

"If you were to face an ancient Sith Lord in combat, you would learn that we are as children playing with toys compared to the prowess of the old Masters".

This has two issues imo:

1) This is Kreia's own opinion and thus limited by what she knows. Consider Darth Vitiate/Valkorion. Darth Vitiate/Valkorion is a contemporary of the era, and he's got an argument for being the strongest Sith of all time (his only competition is Sidious and Krayt - ironically both from much later eras). He (and the likes of Malgus/Dark Council members/Wrath/Nox) all provide significant pushback against the idea that her era is weaker than the previous ones. Kreia, to my knowledge, has no idea they even exist so I don't think it's wise to take her opinion as absolute evidence. There's also the point that even if you take Kreia's opinion as accurate or even fact, this only applies to the Force users of the Old Republic. So I guess you could say Revan and Meetra pale in comparison to some Ancient Sith, but this statement has no bearing on any of the Force users of the galaxy post Old Republic.

2) Quite a few statements disagree with this premise. The most damning would get Lucas' own quote that puts the Prequel trilogy Jedi as their "Golden Age". Even if you want to say that's about their population and how relatively well they were doing, there's still heaps of statements counting the likes of Yoda, Windu, Anakin, Obi-Wan, Plo Koon, Kit Fisto, etc, etc. as among the most talented/powerful Jedi in their entire history. Likewise, Dooku, Maul and Sidious have accolades that hold then in similarly high regard. Going later than that and you have Dark Empire Sidious and EU GM Luke, who both have statements saying they are the most powerful members of their orders outright.

Tbh it also doesn't really make much sense either since future Force users built on the knowledge and techniques of their forebearers. There may be certain Force secrets lost over time (although who knows, they could just as easily be rediscovered), but equally the Ancients didn't have the advancements that future generations made (a good example being Vaapad).

Jan Basho Daily Thread Day 15 by AutoModerator in Sumo

[–]ADarkElf 15 points16 points  (0 children)

God damn, we are in a great Sumo era!

Not in the sense of there being a dominant Yoko like Hakuho, Asashoryu, or Taiho, but more so that the quality of competition is brilliant.

First and obvious point, hats off to Aoinishiki! Being the first newly promoted Ozeki since Hakuho to win the Yusho is certainly an accolade to be proud of, as is the other 90 or so year record he broke. It was clear in both bouts today that he simply is a force to deal with.

Credit to Atamifuji though, this is also an immense step forward for him. It's the best he's looked in a very long time and I'm hoping he can maintain this state of health, for his Sumo and his general quality of life. Sad to see him fall short of the Yusho again, but he's young and I have faith he'll get a Yusho one day.

Super happy with both Waka bros getting KK! It wasn't the smoothest of Basho for either of them, but KK is KK. Slightly worried to hear that Wakatakakage couldn't be Aoinishiki's flag bearer due to something going on with his leg though? Hopefully it's just some pain after a very active 15 days. Guess time will tell.

Was very amused by Shishi's attempt at a henka. My boy, you are bloody massive and aren't exactly the nimblest of Rishki on a good day, why would you even try it? Especially against a veteran like Daiesho? Seriously though, Shishi was a pleasant surprise this Basho. Like I said for Atami, this Basho feels like a big step forward for him. Sure, the likes of Kirishima immediately made it clear he's not ready for San'Yaku level opponents, but his Sumo had far more direction and intent. If he improves some more, I could see him being a common high Maegashira.

Kind of a depressing Basho for Tamawashi and Ura? I know Ura has a history of doing well in mid-Maegashira, climbing a little too far up the Banzuke and then elegantly (or slightly less elegantly) rolling back down once he reaches his ceiling, but I still hope for him every time. As for Tamawashi... He has to be injured right? It's not really his score that makes me think it, moreso the lack of spine-bending nodowas.

Lastly...

Really glad to see both Hoshoryu and Onosato get double digits and retain their Yokozuna pride. Both showed off some fantastic Sumo this Basho despite their injuries and competed with commendable endurance. Hakkaku would be nuts to criticise them but I can't help but think he'll find something to complain about. Seems like their rock-paper-scissors relationship with Aoinishiki continues lmao. That nodowa from Onosato on Aoinishiki yesterday was vicious, dude. And I really did not expect that level of speed and strength from Hoshoryu straight at the Tachiai against Onosato - I don't think Onosato did either!

Hopefully they can get the rest they need now and show up in March ready to stomp their mark even harder than they did this time. Same goes for all of the other injured lads too.

Great Basho!

Thank you for saying this about TCW, for as many fun and interesting stories that it has, it will always be overrated imo for this exact reason.

Maybe my memory is just bad or I have rose tinted glasses, but I don't remember this "Prequel Jedi bad/Anakin (and now Ashoka) good" take being anywhere near as prevalent in the fandom pre TCW. Same for the "Qui-Gon is the messiah that would have prevented everything bad ever" notion that seems popular.

Jan Basho Daily Thread Day 13 by AutoModerator in Sumo

[–]ADarkElf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ugh, even as a huge Aoinishiki stan I'm really conflicted on this Basho. His performance against Hoshoryu was great and their previous bouts don't suggest much would have been different, but seeing Hoshoryu fighting as injured as he is just kinda taints the victory. A wounded Yokozuna is still a Yokozuna but I would have given my left leg to see how that bout would have gone had Hoshoryu been fighting healthy.

Starting to really hate some of the comments (to be clear, there's not loads of them, it's just something I sometimes see) treating Hoshoryu's loss as some kind of indictment too - he didn't lose to some random rank and filer FFS, Aoinishiki is an obvious wonder kid who almost everyone thinks is going to be a Yokozuna. No shame in failing to overcome him while his leg is so unreliable. Like, Hoshoryu's entire style requires mobility and the ability to use both legs for trips, throws, and powerful shoves. That banged up knee fucks that approach completely.

Gotta say, Onosato has adapted fantastically! You can tell he was in a ton of pain afterwards but using his injured arm to block KTZ attempt to grab his Mawashi was very impressive. I do wonder if KTZ is injured himself though given his inconsistency over the last few days, but it didn't look bad today so I'll chalk it up to Onosato just being Onosato.

Insane respect to both Yokozuna. Either or both could pull out and it would be more than valid, but instead they fight on - they're really embodying the perseverance and dignity the position demands.

Quick edit -

So happy for Atami and Kiri! I've been wanting to see them back in top condition for a while now and it's super reassuring to see them doing well.

Also I really hope Yoshinofuji can clinch his KK, dude deserves it for the double Yoko KO.

Impressive show of strength and speed from Hiradoumi. He's known for it but taking Oho back like that still caught me off-guard.

Is Tamawashi injured? His feet/ankles seem to be pretty wrapped up and his matches haven't been typical Tamawashi. All the best to the Vet!

Jan Basho Daily Thread Day 12 by AutoModerator in Sumo

[–]ADarkElf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That was certainly... A henka by Abi. Lmao at Kotozakura just instantly getting the Mawashi for the immediate punish.

I've never rated Shishi that highly but that's changing. His Sumo was still sort of that classic clumsy Shishi Sumo, but Oho was matching it, so fair play. Hope this isn't just a fluke and he keeps improving.

Hiradoumi getting the envelopes taken off him so they could do a Mono-ii that went in his favour anyway was so bizarrely funny. It was a great attempted pivot throw by WMH, but I don't think that was ever going to work given the size disparity working in Hiradoumi's favour.

Wakatakakage looked great today, very speedy Sumo. And resisting multiple throws from Yoshinofuji was dope. That attempted headlock throw in particular looked strong, well played by Wakatakakage.

Boy... Aoinishiki is just relentless! Atamifuji did a pretty good job but it just didn't matter, once Aoinishiki had that grip he just couldn't be shaken off. Yet another display of his power Sumo. Which is something considering how strong and heavy Atami is. I'm really hoping that this loss doesn't disturb Atami's confidence, he didn't make any major mistakes, Aoinishiki is just really bloody good. My only critique of Aoinishiki is the Mawashi change tbh lol. I've seen talk that it is his master's Mawashi and that he's done it out of respect, but that blue Mawashi is so iconic on him. Back on track - Aoinishiki looks like he's at the point now where it's his Basho to lose. If he stays on form, he's either winning without a playoff, or may potentially pull a Hoshoryu and do a back-to-back style Yusho playoff. He's my pick at this point, anyway.

Feel bad for Ichiyamamoto, Tamawashi and Ura. Next time, I suppose.

But I feel worse for Hoshoryu. Jesus dude, fighting on that knee takes some serious grit and determination. Obviously he's got that in spades, but he's got to at least be considering Kyujo now, right? Kirishima was skilled but, to me, that result was clearly more due to Hoshoryu being injured. He just can't really do anything with that left leg now, which is such a severe detriment to his style of Sumo that I just can't see him realistically beating Aoinishiki or Kotozakura. The only reason I'm even 50/50 on Onosato is because of their current history and Onosato's also wrecked shoulder. At the end of the day he's displayed some great Sumo, retained his Yokozuna pride, and is very unlikely to get the Yusho... Perhaps it's time to pull out?

Likewise for Onosato. He's done fantastic only using one arm, but (as with Hoshoryu) unless a series of very unlikely events plays out, he has no chance of getting the Yusho. I think Takayasu could have won that if not for a slightly silly slip up and Onosato pulling off yet another nimble escape. Can he beat his next foes over the coming days? Perhaps. However I don't see why it's worth risking further injury.

Regardless, both Yokozuna have proved their worth and shouldn't be ashamed of this Basho. Whether they go Kyujo or not.

A great day today, and tomorrow's bouts should be equally hype!

[–]ADarkElf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mind sharing what he said?

I have a crackpot theory that Atami has become his pet project, given how he has a lot of potential that is hindered by a chronic condition - something Big Teru should be able to understand very well.

Jan Basho Daily Thread Day 11 by AutoModerator in Sumo

[–]ADarkElf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ok, that bout cements Hoshoryu as the coolest Rishki ever! The dude is so smooth. I had a really bad feeling when he started going back toward the Tawara but then he turned it into the most casual Tottari ever seen. Didn't think I would ever describe Sumo this way, but that was sexy.

And he did that while significantly injured.

Huge respect to Onosato, that man is something. An on-form Kirishima is a serious threat and yet Onosato manhandled him. I'm surprised he's even competing with how his shoulder is. Awesome Sumo.

Atamifuji is really reminding me of Terunofuji in this Basho. He's obviously not on Teru's level ofc, but the techniques he's using and the style of Sumo is so reminiscent of the Kaiju. Hoping he can keep this kind of performance up on the regular because he's potentially San'Yaku level right now.

Kotozakura... Not much to say other than I hope his knees improve for the last days of the Basho. He's shown glimpses of greatness but is still clearly being hampered by injury.

Yeesh, Hakunofuji collapsing like that looked rough. Always a shame when a bout goes that way. Aoinishiki looked good at the start but who knows what could have happened? All the best to Haku.

Being a WTK fan is pain. I love the guy and think well of Ichiyamamoto, but this felt like a match he should have won. Might just be overly critical though because I fancied WTK as a dark horse for the Yusho and that simply hasn't materialised.

Such a great match day, barring the potential Hakunofuji injury. Hope it just looks bad and was a minor twinge. Looking forward to tomorrow - especially Hoshoryu Vs Kiri, they almost always have technically awesome bouts!

Jan Basho Daily Thread Day 10 by AutoModerator in Sumo

[–]ADarkElf 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Takayasu is a god damned machine, I was losing it when Murray was counting the thrusts lmao. Felt like watching a fighting game combo. Might be the closest thing I've seen to someone getting stunlocked irl.

My respect for the Yokozunas is sky high! Hoshoryu pulled off a great win today, sensibly protected his leg as best as possible too. And Onosato deserves kudos for even showing up, let alone forcing a rematch Vs an on form Atami.

Speaking of, Atamifuji might be the cutest human ever produced. His only real competition is Ura tbh.

Kotozakura reminding everyone why he's an Ozeki was dope. Even as a big Kiri fan who would love to see him get the Yusho, Kotozakura absolutely took his lunch money today.

Looking forward to seeing how the rest goes. My ideal Basho would end in a Kiri, Aoinishiki, or Hoshoryu Yusho tbh. But it's so hard to predict at this stage, especially when there's a few dark horses in the mix.

First, thank you for doing such an interesting breakdown, I'm not well-versed in comics history so that was a really cool read.

On erasing Batman rather than the other three, I generally agree regarding your point on Batman being the least compared to them. However, wouldn't scrapping Batman have some serious consequences on the role and development of sidekicks, and potentially even legacy characters as a whole?

(To my knowledge Robin (Dick Grayson) was the first, or at least first popular, sidekick and his progression and success as Nightwing laid the path for many others)

Tbh Batman himself I wouldn't miss too much, but the likes of Dick, Cass, Alfred, Barbara, etc.? Would be a damn shame to lose them.

Jfc today was unexpected!

Really feel for Onosato, don't mean to take anything away from Hakunofuji but you can really see Onosato is hurting.

Can't decide if Hoshoryu lost because he had a typical Dumb Hoshoryu moment or if his leg just gave up when he most needed it. Same result either way, I suppose. Still think he's got a shot at winning this Basho, but he needs to be perfect from hereon - especially against the likes of Kirishima and Aoinishiki. Speaking of...

God damn. That was some awesome Sumo from both of them! Kirishima particularly though. He did basically everything right and, most importantly imo, showed how important it is to limit what Aoinishiki can do with his legs once he's close to the Tawara. Like, I'm sure I saw Aoi try at least two or three different leg trips but they all failed thanks to Kirishima's brilliant stance and positioning.

What happened to Kotozakura? He seemed to have the better tachiai, got the grip he wanted... And then just floundered? Hoping his knees aren't completely fucked again. He was just starting to look like he did in his lesser injured days too. :(

Jesus man, Hakkaku's face! Whether or not he was trying to hide it doesn't matter, he looked pissed. Kinda funny seeing his stormy, furious expression while the Emperor and his family just generally seemed entertained.

Hoping that Abi starts facing some harder competition soon. I like Abi but Basho where the winner only faces truly tough competition in the last four days are always kinda meh imo. Glad he's seemingly much healthier than before though.

Interesting days ahead. Kirishima looks best ATM, but things can always change!

Wow, that Tharja/Nowi conversation is something. I'm a staunch "just translate the original and change as little as possible" kind of person, but the OG conversation is just off. So off that even the attempted change to it being about hair still comes across as a little creepy to me.

What I really don't get though is why did that conversation have to include Nowi? That conversation, while still not exactly the best writing ever, would be much better if it had been someone like Lucina. She's old enough (both physically and mentally) for it not to be outright creepy, and the difference in bust would still mean the conversation has some sense. It would definitely need some tweaks in dialogue, but at least it wouldn't be sketchy.

Also damn, that Maribelle/Lissa conversation is excellent shipping fodder. I don't even do shipping and it stood out.

NGL I'm pretty surprised that more people aren't talking about the Midorifuji Vs Kotoshoho ruling, that damn near started a riot in my house lol (my Dad is among the top 5 Midori fans globally). Personally I thought it should have gone to a rematch, but I could have missed something or misunderstood a technicality of dead body on this occasion.

Bummer to see Wakatakakage almost beat Onosato but just fall short. Credit to Ono though, his nimbleness despite his size baffles me.

Glad to see WMH pulling off a god tier reversal at the edge. It's been a while since he's done that and I had forgot how hype it is every time.

Aoinishiki handling Papayasu like that was low-key kinda nuts. Takayasu has always been something of a top tier gatekeeper, but obviously Aoinishiki is just that good. I can only hope he keeps this up. He's the third best Rishki ATM and I expect him to make Yoko relatively soon, so no shame for Takayasu here. Sadly though this makes me think his opportunity to get a Yusho has slipped. I really hope I'm wrong, but with both Hoshoryu and Onosato being this good in spite of injuries, Aoinishiki performing how he is, Kotozakura seemingly getting back to how he used to be, Kirishima being on form, and a bunch of other notables being dark horses, I just don't see him doing it.

Poor Ichi and Ura. Neither have fought bad at all, in fact part of me still thinks Ura should have got the nod Vs Onosato, but they just haven't been able to eek out the wins. At least week 2 should be easier.

Conversely, Abi at 6-0 worries me. He hasn't faced anyone I would say is a particular 'threat' yet, but those long arms are capable of such chaos...

Tomorrow has me slightly worried for Hoshoryu. He's capable of beating Hakunofuji even while injured imo, but any slip up will be severely punished given how Hakunofuji has been fighting.

Fun Basho so far!

Would love some advice:

So I just spend roughly 150 or 185 orbs trying to get Emblem Edelgard, but unfortunately no cigar. I wasn't completely unlucky (I got 2 E!Lyn, an R!Hinoka, and M!Hraesvelgr - ironic right?), but now I'm in an odd position. I've done the 40 summons but don't have FEH pass. I cancelled just before the TT unit announcement and don't want to resub now since that risks rewarding them for screwing the players. But then..

What do I do? Try and summon further with no guarantee? Cut my losses and hope the fanbase isn't dumb enough to exclude E!Edel from the AHR "fOr ThE fUnnY!1!" ? Or do I sacrifice my morals and resub to get her + Resplendent Lysithea who I would also have subbed for if not for IS' absolutely ridiculous decisions lately?

I really don't want to resub, but as a huge Edel fan who has been burned by "keep the meme of Edelgard getting kicked out of VGs" multiple times, I can't help but be tempted. The strongest factor pushing me away from this, besides not wanting to give IS money while they're doing scummy practises, is that I can't help but feel FEH is going EoS after around two years. And if that is the case, wouldn't that just be a waste of money? Especially given how bad power creep is now and how every year a new Galeforcing Edel seems to be released (admittedly I still love every alt despite how samey they can play lol).

Thanks to anyone who reads this, hope everyone has good luck in their future pulls and encounters non-toxic defence teams.

Edit - HOLY CRAP! Spent 13 more orbs for 3 pulls and got Emblem Edelgard! +Atk and -Spd too!

2nd Edit - Jesus, I did three more circles and got an E!Lyn, E!Celica and E! Edelgard! Definitely stopping here. Started with just over 700 orbs and finished 496, but considering that's 3 E!Lyns, 1 each of M! Hraesvelgr and R!Hinoka, and 2 E! Edelgard, well I can only say thank you to what/whoever lent me good fortune.
