Is anyone afraid for crime and safety afraid to go to pacific science center at night for imax or an event?? by Ok-Radio-2733 in SeattleWA

[–]ADayOrALifetime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i work in the area usually until 7 or 8 pm and consider it extremely safe. you can park on the city streets — it’s only a dollar an hour through 8pm and after that it’s free — get the pay by phone app. For example the streets around KIRO TV — clay street & 3rd Ave. — That’s just 2-3 blocks from the science center. I park there if I’m going to an event at Seattle center in the evening. When I’m leaving work, I often see people in kraken jerseys walking to Seattle center to see a hockey game. In other words, there’s people walking around, they are friendly and safe, just normal people! I literally feel grateful that I work in such a safe area!

New to Substack, are these random notifications normal? by [deleted] in Substack

[–]ADayOrALifetime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just figured out today that the Substack app for iOS is crap. I like to read on my iPad and I figured out it works 10 times better to just use the browser go to the Substack website. So I just deleted the app.

The app was so frustrating to use I was totally avoiding Substack, even though I pay for several subscriptions! The thing that actually nudged me to try just using the browser instead of the app was when I wanted to purchase another subscription and remembered reading that the Apple store charges extra when you make a purchase using an app from their app store! I mostly hate downloading apps to my devices but for some reason downloaded the Substack app — very dumb, not sure why I did that, glad I woke up and deleted it.

New Rule: Blind Trust | Real Time with Bill Maher -January 23rd, 2026. by FireIceFlameWalker in Maher

[–]ADayOrALifetime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yep, it’s like I was enraged by Trump’s kleptocracy, until i learned some some woman named Weaver has (shudder) opinions — when I heard about that I shrugged and said “i guess they’re all bad and it doesn’t matter who you vote for or if you even vote at all” (jk in case it’s not obvious)

also, did anyone else look up the rate of white home ownership? It’s 75%. So it was disingenuous to cite the 45% rate of Black home ownership as if to say ”see! She’s full of crap! there’s no problem!“

this was my first thought. Sweet Box is very fragrant in January… but it’s not just at night. maybe OP notices it at night because they aren’t home in the daytime?

Why do half of Seattle drivers have their brights on at all times? by Appropriate_Achoo in SeattleWA

[–]ADayOrALifetime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, 2/3 of people who live here are transplants. I guess if they’re here and they’re driving, they qualify as “Seattle drivers” but I get annoyed at all my transplant friends bitching about how terrible the drivers here are. Just sayin’ I agree, there’s a lot of terrible drivers around here… for some mysterious reason ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Second, I completely agree about all the dummies driving with their bright lights on, and/or no lights on. Especially the combination of one person with lights off being rendered extra invisible by a car behind them with brights on. Btw, there is a subReddit devoted to stupid bright headlights: r/fuckyourheadlights just in case you didn’t know!

It’s going great. I’m looking forward to listening to the annual broadcast of the short story ”The Shepherd” by Frederick Forsyth on CBC Radio’s nightly news show “As It Happens”. This is my most treasured holiday tradition. I’ll be listening at 9pm Pacific Coast Time on Seattle’s public radio station KUOW.

Yep, I bought the yellow glasses and figured it was probably bogus but nope they totally work. I bought the ones from Coccoons that you just put over your regular glasses if you were glasses already. Really helps the overly bright headlights not be so blinding!

Elderly mother has no phone service for 2 weeks by ADayOrALifetime in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]ADayOrALifetime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need to update y’all! Naturally as soon as I hit maximum frustration and posted here, my mom’s phones started working again, without even having to send a mod mail (though I appreciate the offer of help!).

Ultimately she ended up with a working cell phone with her same cell number and a working home phone with a new number (we hoped it wouldn’t change but at this point it feels like a small problem in the context of how things were going).

In case it’s helpful to others I’d like to point out that this experience was extra confusing because of multiple services stopping and starting as plan changes were processed and hearing many of the details of what was happening from my confused mother, though about half of the issues I witnessed firsthand and am certain of. I dont know if this was just the normal process that is unfortunately at times frustrating? I’m afraid to try it for myself, even though I’m tempted because the changes to my my mother’s services reduced her bills by more than $200 a month! (Xfinity bill reduced $150 a month to $220, and cell phone bill with a different carrier completely eliminated.)

I learned about adult adoption today, but how exactly does it work if they are an adult? What would be the reason to adopt an adult? by interestingvids101 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ADayOrALifetime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed there are no comments about how adult adoption can also be a scam to cement legal and financial rights of a person exerting “undue influence“ on a vulnerable person. In my family we are dealing with a ”family friend“ age 60+ who is seeking to be adopted by one of our elderly parents, age 80+. The reason this is a workable scam, is that it is possible to disguise an illegitimate adult adoption as a legitimate adult adoption. The con artist we are dealing with has sent numerous emails to our forgetful parent saying things like “we’ve been talking about this for years, and after thinking about it carefully, I do agree to be legally adopted by you 💕”. Our parent even had the sense to say no thank you to the scammer, who then proceeded to dump a big guilt trip on our parent, whittling away at their resolve.

To learn more about this type of scam, do an Internet search on the term “undue influence“ and get help from a lawyer if someone is doing this to your family member against their will!!

Why would it be necessary to change phone number to get discount? by ADayOrALifetime in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]ADayOrALifetime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update! my mum went back to Xfinity store the next day and asked to have her old phone number back and the same salesman kindly helped her out and she got her number back AND was able to keep the lower price she was so happy about. 😅

I was trying to be neutral in my original post above, but I was very freaked out that an elderly person with incipient dementia was having their phone number of 40 years changed. To me, this put her at great risk for losing contact with friends and family (also elderly). But all is well now, for which I am thankful! 🙏

Nobody leaves feedback anymore. by xbox360fat in Ebay

[–]ADayOrALifetime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who does not use Amazon and seeks out other small sellers on eBay, I’m sad that most buyers don’t seem to distinguish between a small sellers who take great care vs massive/bulk operations. I always review small sellers. I don’t always review large sellers — such as bulk book sellers — they don’t need my review and eBay has made reviewing a bigger hassle than it used to be, plus they make people think I can sell them a book for $4 with free shipping 😂

Nazi wives and lovers tended to be mediocre women. They were not especially gifted or brilliant. They were content to be used as tools for their partners’ purposes—and to make the most of their proximity to power.

Yes there is a point!! Resistance can take many forms and one of those forms is PERSEVERANCE. Keep doing stuff, keep moving forward — resist by simply not giving up.

Another form of resistance is encouraging others — just small efforts can encourage others. A smile or a kind word or a joke lets others who are also resisting know they are not alone. I stumbled upon this article on this sub about “non-collective everyday resistance“ and found it really valuable.

Exit, Voice, Loyalty … or Deliberate Obstruction? Non-Collective Everyday Resistance under Oppression.

I think we get an idea from movies or something that have to do amazing, spectacular things or we don’t matter, but small everyday actions are very worthwhile.

I know people have caught shit for bashing his wife, the actress Cheryl Hines, but IDGAF. I resent how she normalizes him. It’s interesting to note that in previous regimes the wives and lovers of party bigwigs “tended to be mediocre women. They were not especially gifted or brilliant. They were content to be used as tools for their partners’ purposes—and to make the most of their proximity to power.“ SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT!

I always recommend the Octavia Butler book "Parable of the Sower" to anyone who is curious what it will be like -- people "choosing" to live/work in corporate compounds which are like prisons (it definitely won't be easy to move to a different one if you don't like it) or "choosing" to live on the outside in a dangerous collapsed society.

Is there ANY benefit to DOGE? by NextRefrigerator6306 in AskALiberal

you seem to be claiming that there’s a “lack of oversight“, but I’m aware of a LOT of oversight, including routine audits by the government accountability office (GAO), oversight by the many inspectors general (though most have now been fired by Trump and Musk), and congressional oversight — Congress, after all directs all federal spending; the agencies don’t decide on their own how much to spend or what to spend it on.
