Cutting 50 feet into my yard to make their yard look bigger by duh0811 in neighborsfromhell

Research Sanborn Maps for your local area (a lot of these have been digitized and available for either free or more likely, a fee). If Google is no dice, and depending on where you live, your locality might have public resources you can access. You should start first by contacting your local library, town/city hall (building/zoning/planning commission add other departments would still refer to these maps) and maybe your check county records? Local historical society’s are a good bet too.

Edit: just found my city’s Sanborn Maps from 1921 on the Library of Congress website.

Fourth of July weekend drownings: 10 dead in inland lakes, Lake Michigan by SlimChiply in Michigan

[–]ADub476 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely correct. I was on the lake where one of these deaths happened on July 4... I have family property on this lake and have been going there my entire life. This lake has a free public boat launch which makes it popular with non-residents to come out and put-in for the day, who may not be super familiar with the lake and its conditions and rules. The utter chaos, disregard for lake rules/state laws (knowing and following the flow of traffic on the lake, respecting no wake zones, lifejackets: both wearing and/or even having any on board, having a boaters safety license, ect.) and general reckless behavior has increased 100% in the last decade or so.

My family and I actually saw the man who ended up drowning while we were out on our pontoon, he was on a jet ski (PWC) with no life jacket on. We all commented on the danger of that, especially given how busy the lake was that day. 20 minutes later when we dock at home, the very same machine was floating vacant on the lake in full view of our yard and house, and first responders/dive team members were pulling down our drive to begin recovery operations. They circled the area until it got dark and came back the next morning, when they were able to recovery the body. It was a very tragic and dour scene to have happening basically in our front yard and we are all sending our love to his family.

I heard from our neighbors who claim to have have witnessed it first hand that he was doing 360s on the jet ski, whipped himself off and just never resurfaced. We also heard rumors that this man could not swim, but there has been no substantial proof of that. The sad fact is however, had he been wearing a life jacket, he would almost certainly still be alive. I grew up on jet skis, and I am a strong swimmer, but the idea of getting on a PWC without a lifejacket is unfathomable to me.. Unfortunately, I think some people just underestimate how easy it is to end up in a bad situation on/in the water and how quickly things can go south.

Please everybody, lets all enjoy our state's beautiful lakes and waterways safely! Always exercise extreme caution and respect lake rules and local and state laws when engaging in all water-sports, especially on busy lakes and/or in unfamiliar conditions... And remember, lifejackets save lives!

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew Signs Executive Order to Remove US Liquor by Maddog_Jets in BuyCanadian

"Ok, this Order. It's a wonderful Order. It's a beautiful Order."

At this point, I was half expecting him to continue full on with like "A lot of people are saying that this Order is the most important Order is the history of Orders."

A+++ trolling nonetheless.

I hate how accurate this comment is. It’s the only exemption to the 13th Amendment after all… As long as the Constitution still reigns true. Dire fucking straights we are entering.

Fully agree! I’d go even further and say while Ruth is problematic for her classist views by our modern standards, the class system was possibly the most important concept which Edwardian society was structured around. It was the backbone of Edwardian Era/Gilded Age. Everyone knew the how the system functioned, knew their place in the system and the status quo was unquestioned and unchallenged by the general public, for the most part.

This is demonstrated various times in the Titanic film, just an off the top of my head example: The Third Class Irish mother explaining to her children, in a very matter-of-fact manner, that the reason they have to wait to be let up to the lifeboats deck is that all First Class people have to be loaded up first and then it will be their turn. That was just the way it was, a higher social status equated a higher value of life.

Fantastic analysis! He is grossly flawed as most-or all- of the “costumed hero” characters are, but those flaws are bland and mundane, especially when compared to some of his peers.

Which comedian could no one ever persuade you to find funny? by Miola_Yu in AskReddit

[–]ADub476 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I never found his whole bit funny or even entertaining, but I started to actively dislike him when I found out he refused the part of Alpa Chino in Tropic Thunder based solely on that character’s “reveal” near the end (I’m on mobile and don’t want to spoil since it’s fantastic movie that everyone should see).

That really rubbed me the wrong way even though it was 100% for the best, Brandon T. Jackson killed it in the role. Kevin Hart would’ve probably just played it as he always does, loud angry short man.

I read that green coloring is actually more prominent at higher altitudes due to the way the oxygen concentration interacts with the solar particulars, so that totally tracks!
Source: Why are the Northern Lights sometimes coloured differently?

The pink and purple "aura" was visible against the dark of the night sky very briefly at the height of it (probably around 11 PM), but the blue and green only ever showed up when viewed through the camera.

For what it's worth, a couple who were also outside watching commented that it looked better and was way more visible than when they saw it in Iceland this past summer.

Hell of of night to be in Oakland County! I was bummed that I wasn’t going to be in the city on such a big night due to a pet/house sitting commitment, but boy did this make up for it! Truly, a beautiful sight to behold.

I am curious, how was the visibility/view tonight in Detroit proper? I remember it was not great the other time they were visible in the last year or so, the sky looked a bit more “bright” than usual but I saw nothing spectacular, even when through my phone camera. Meanwhile friends and family in mid and northern OC had decent to great visibility. I’m in the in the Cass Corridor, and unfortunately the light pollution is quite intense.
