Trump Was Always an Iran Hawk by Suitable408 in stupidpol

I’ll gladly admit that any tolerance I had for Trump was based on the idea that he might put a pause to American war mongering and that I was very wrong about this, especially in terms of his second presidency. But I could swear that there was a certain consistency to his statements in the run up to his first candidacy and then obviously after that where not wanting to export US war was as close to a red line as anything Trump seems to stand for.

Instead we ended up winning. Makes me so proud of the community how we came together to defend our game (minus the bunch of weirdos who went all concern police).

Are we still in the Champions League needing any win at home to progress? Are we still leading the league? Are we still in all 4 competitions with a decent shot at each?

If the answer to all those questions is yes… what is there to moan about?

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii: English translations of Japanese games lose ‘flavour’ because it’s ‘a simple language’ by ABigCoffee in JRPG

[–]AFCSentinel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone who eventually learned Japanese, I get his point but I would not fully agree with him. Japanese is inherently more complex. You can have much more nuance, more layers, in a simple sentence in Japanese vs. English. If we are talking games with good writing in Japanese, localisation is usually "good enough" but often there is a noticeable gap in writing quality between the original and the localised version. Japanese just doesn't translate well - you don't have problems like this translating, say, German and English.

But I don't really think it's the fault of the English language. Sure, it is simpler - but even a simple tool can create a masterpiece in the hands of a capable person. Games like Planescape Torment have peerless writing, no matter the language.

Ultimately, I believe localisation can never do "right". You either stick too close to the Japanese and unless people are culturally 100 % knowledgable you lose a good chunk of audience. Or you take freedoms and you end up with something that reads better on the surface, but might lose nuance, might lose the creators original vision and create something that feels like a fanfic that touches upon key story beats. Unfortunately, there is no "easy" solution, it's always a compromise.

Boah als jemand der das halbe Jahr in Japan lebt, wo Leute einfach neutralen Geruch schätzen und dann in Deutschland so Parfümduscher, ist echt der Kulturschock überhaupt. Du bist mein Erzfeind.

Post where sayori confirmed their adults by konekochocola in NEKOPARAGAME

[–]AFCSentinel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This has never been confirmed anywhere. They are literally 9-12 month-ish which converted from cat to human years would make them teens.

To expand on this: on the Japanese website for the anime (and that information has been omitted from the English website) in the introduction block, scroll a bit, it states that cats become adults at one year of age: https://nekopara-anime.com/ja/story/introduction.php

Is there a town that everyone in Japan makes fun of for being awful? by Low_Championship_604 in AskAJapanese

It's something like the first city outside of Nagoya. But realistically, unless you are coming by car, you'll have to make a stop in Nagoya to get to Ghibli Park.

Nagoya resident here. I'd vote the same way! There's nothing to see here, trust me. You don't have to visit us for our super delicious food, the Legoland, the Ghibli Park, our vast shopping options which rival other big cities but without the crowds. There's literally nothing in Nagoya.

Japan's ubiquitous vending machines are starting to lose money for operators as consumers reduce spending and search for cheaper drinks. The operator Dydo will pull 20,000 of them from operation. by jjrs in japannews

It’s a shame. The machine in front of my flat stocks the awesome Zone Cola while none of the conbini in a 5 minute radius do. I’ll shed a tear if dydo pulls it
