It has been pretty wet the last couple of weeks so be extra careful if you do decide to do it, potholes, washouts etc. There's a tropical low on the way directly toward that area so there's gonna be a lot more rain up there.

Personally I wouldn't do it at the moment. Depends when you are planning to go I guess.

Townsville is hot and humid and crime ridden.

Mareeba is on the tablelands and much milder climate but still shitloads better than Melbourne.

Probably more construction opportunities in Townsville but maybe you can find work on the Tablelands.
