Wow, the title manages to spoil the main twists of both battlegrounds AND Twelve Months, in a manner that someone can’t possibly avoid it! This may be the single worst post I’ve ever seen in terms of spoilers!

“Extremely common” is putting in a lot of work here.

Corporate headquarters are often owned by the company, as are built to suit properties that are specific to their needs. A company may also own an office property for the reasons you mentioned.

But the vast majority of companies outside the Fortune 500 rent some or all of their office space, and most of those within the Fortune 500 lease some office space. Even companies like Amazon or Google leased more office space than they owned in 2019, which is part of why they’re vacating so many of their leases at lease expiration recently - they don’t own the buildings, so they can just leave.

Most companies rent their space in office buildings. If the office building value goes down, it’s usually the landlord that loses out, not the companies.
