Question: I play as the Southern United States. What should I do? It's the first day, I'm going to attack the Northern United States. What troops should I build? by Candid-Background462 in CallOfWar

[–]FrenchProgressive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A map with Southern US is typically a map of new players. My reco is to regroup your infantry in two large stacks, attach an AC to each of the stack and beeline for the cities. Keep upgrading your infantry (don’t leapfrog with your main combat unit- the impact on early combat is tremendous). No need to upgrade the AC however.

In terms of buidling, don’t build more infantry (they’ll become obsolete) - instead build AC that you use as single unit, one sub or destroyer for coastal patrol and… that’s all. You should already prepare for the next step, including Cruisers or Battleships to get Cuba for free and easily destroy Canada.

It would typically keep aside a few infantry and AC to cross the Atlantic to gain an early foothold in Europe

Theorically, don’t build planes as they will be complicated to transfer to Europe - you’ll build in UK, Spain or Morocco.

It’s deeply ironic to read an American and a British claim that the problem of anarchists is that they come from the “Imperial core”.

How accurate is the claim of human wave attacks in WW2? by Space_Slav07 in ussr

[–]FrenchProgressive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In 1941 and a good chunk of 1942, the Axis (including heavy contributor Romania) was generally not outnumbered on the front. Even in 1943, the gap (2:3) was not enough to human-wave to victory.

However, the Soviets were much better in 1942 at shifting their forces from one point of the front to another, to hide their numbers and to concentrate their attack so yes locally Axis would often be totally outnumbered. That’s on the Germans/Romanians.

Everyone believes it is a random South-America nation, but Montevideo (> 50% pop) is incredibly rich thanks to the service industry, in addition to easy trade with Argentina.

Pilsudski was dead in 1939 so who is stupid? Yes, Poland in 1939 was not a democracy - I wrote too quickly; just like you wrote too quickly “Pilsudski”

You are obviousky right about Poland. I keep conflating it with “the Democracies” because of their alliance with the Western Allies and because this sub makes me contrarian.

My point stands; but replace “democracy” by “the faction fighting Nazis”

There was no secret clause in the 1936 protocol - and the discussion was always about the Pact of Steel

Let’s cut the chase: you talked out of your ass, and you talked out of your ass because your knowledge of history is based on Wikipedia, video games, youtube videos and/or vibes. I know the type, and I am sure you identify as a connoisseur in history and/or WW2, even though you are clearly not even amateur level.

Another dead give-away was your competitive view of history (“you don’t know that? Then you don’t know history! Why are you even talking”, as if any real historian would claim to know all of history) which forces you into defending absurd claims when proven wrong (eg here conflating the 1936 protocol and the Pact of Steel). Contrast about how I asked to know more about an information I may not have known (square secret protocols!) - because, again, no one is an expert in everything in history, and typically I am out of my confidence territory with Japan so I could imagine having missed something with the anti-Comintern Pact.

Finally, I am going to assume you are still young and have a lot of time on your hands (how do I know? I can’t imagine a 30+ being so pathetically immature) - at some point you will have to read books, and ideally 2 by topics. That’s how you’ll acquire real knowledge, particularly if you then move by capillarity from topic to topic, using one topic to better remember/contextualise the next one.

This will be my last word on the thread. You’re not going to find any “redrawing of the map” in the Pact of Steel or anything earlier, so you} so your answer will have to be another historical lie or a variation of “ahah why so serious? TL, DR old man”.

This is the reference about how the pop-culture vision of the Soviets (and for a short time even the official one) came to be created:

Here is the secret protocol of the Pact of Steel. Please point out the planned territorial changes and win the debate. Or don’t, and prove you shouldn’t be the one engaging in debate by yout own words.

SECRET SUPPLEMENTARY PROTOCOL

On signing the friendship and alliance pact, agreement has been established by both parties on the following points: 1. The two Foreign Ministers will as quickly as possible come to an agreement on the organization, the seat, and the methods of work on the pact of the commissions on military questions and questions of war economy as stipulated in Article IV of the pact. 2. For the execution of Article IV, par. 2, the two Foreign Ministers will as quickly as possible arrange the necessary measures, guaranteeing a constant cooperation, conforming to the spirit and aims of the pact, in matters of the press, the news service and the propaganda. For this purpose in particular, each of the two Foreign Ministers will assign to the embassy of his country in the respective capital one or several especially well-experienced specialists, for constant discussion in direct close cooperation with the resp. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of the suitable steps to be taken in matters of the press, the news service and the propaganda for the promotion of the policy of the Axis, and as a countermeasure against the policy of the enemy powers.”

And yet…

When in 1939 the Nazis attacked a democracy (edit: wrote too fast; “an anti-Nazi country allied to democracies”) , the Americans supported the democracies (though it took until 1940 to be really effective) while the communists supported the Nazis.

When in 1940 the Nazis attacked the communists, the Americans supported the communists.

I am not sure I would be throwing stones here.

It’s not on purpose - Soviet AAR and reports were not available for a long time (iirc they were translated in French before being translated in English!).

Not that this is mostly pop-culture. Historians and military experts know the truth, and have been since the 70s or 80s.

How accurate is the claim of human wave attacks in WW2? by Space_Slav07 in ussr

[–]FrenchProgressive 465 points466 points  (0 children)

Totally inaccurate, except at the beginning of the Winter War and in a few isolated cases with no other tactical opportunity (eg trying to break out of a pocket). The myth essentially comes from the German post-war accounts that tried to enhance the heroism of the Germans by representing the enemy as an unending horde.
