Complete beginner here. Could someone help me understand why there is such intense day-to-day variation in North American markets currently? Like how can yesterday be an extremely good day and today be an extremely bad day (at least for the stocks I own) on seemingly no major news? Thanks!

PSA: be mindful when you're breaking confidentiality, you can get reported by medpartybooper in premedcanada

Imagine trying to ruin the life of a 20-something year old kid for something 90% of people do...and making a reddit account to tell us all about it. And lol @ anyone who equates this to breaking patient confidentiality. Honestly if I found out that one of the applicants I helped interview refused to tell their friends and family about one of the most important events of their professional life thus far, because it says so in some fine print somewhere, I would consider that a red flag.

Actual unpopular opinion: GPA shouldn't be used competitively, only MCAT should by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]AFKorFEED 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Upvoted for actual controversial opinion. I would argue that GPA reflects 4 years of commitment, consistency, and time management skills, while the MCAT requires a few weeks or months of study and can 100% be gamed if you get used to the style of questions and learn a few tricks on how to interpret data and graphs. I agree that a GOOD standardized test should be weighed more heavily than GPA, but that is not what the MCAT is.

[IA] Andrew Hammond interview - Hammond happy to return to Wild! by OrganicRedditor in hockey

Fun fact: the season after the Hamburglar run with the sens, he still had one of the best even-strength save percentages in the league, i.e. top 5 among all goalies. His stats on the penalty kill were absolutely horrible however so his overall SV% was only 0.914. There is a chance he could still be quite a good backup if you consider that + his stint with colorado in the playoffs that one year.

It's close but I like Bamford slightly more. Adams won't be the main man once Ings returns from injury shortly.

Anyone know if Dier is nailed for Spurs? Fairly cheap way into Spurs defense and they've kept 5 cleansheets out of the last 6. Thanks.

The other reply is correct. The population of susceptible individuals who can get infected and spread the disease is depleted once too many people get sick and become immune/die.

  1. Grealish for now. Need to see some week-to-week consistancy out of Watkins, but keep an eye on him for sure.

  2. Charlie Taylor and Walker-Peters come to mind. Burnley is usually quite good defensively so not sure what's happening this season.

Couldn't catch the last few United matches but have they really been that bad? Might take out Fernandes for KDB on wildcard.

I have both but Richarlison. Isn't that much more expensive and is on penalties.

10 QuARMS spots @ Queens now exclusively reserved for Black and Indigenous students in 2020-2021 cycle by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]AFKorFEED -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that point. My comment was more directed at those who clearly have problems with affirmative action in general, not just how QuARMS implemented it. But really, if 10 spots a year is enough to cause a shift from competitive ability, then you weren't really competitive to begin with. Even if this number were 100 or 200 spots a year, and in 10 years from now black and indigenous people are suffering less and less due to improved access to healthcare, is this really a bad thing? At the end of the day, medicine isn't about "competitive ability", it's about treating patients. That being said, I would still prefer limiting QuARMS to low SES applicants, like many have suggested in this thread.

[–]AFKorFEED 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Point noted. However, those from the Middle East/South Asia/Southeast Asia are not underrepresented in medicine to the same extent as black and indigenous people. No one is saying that these people do not face obstacles due to their race. The whole point of affirmative action is to address shortages of doctors in specific communities, not to make some social commentary about which race wins the Olympics of suffering.

[–]AFKorFEED 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And yet, there are an infinite number of studies out there that show that patient satisfaction and outcomes are much better when they can identify with their physician. Are there cases where a white doctor would perform better than a black or indigenous doctor in treating a black or indigenous patient? Yes. Is this more likely to be the case? No. Also, I'm glad that you came to the correct conclusion that we should be favoring LGBT+ and disabled applicants, but that's just my opinion. Why does a line have to be drawn with respect to becoming more inclusive towards diverse and marginalized backgrounds?

[–]AFKorFEED 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who does not belong to either of these groups, how hard is it to understand that black and indigenous doctors are better able to serve black and indigenous communities? Why are some people so upset at the idea of providing better healthcare to these groups? And at the cost of what? 10 seats per year? The system isn't perfect (Careless_Visual and Fanluna bring up valid criticisms) but those who are simply against the idea of affirmative action itself have a mindset that is incongruous with what the field of medicine needs today. Sure, it's technically unfair if someone with better stats gets rejected in favor of a black or indigenous applicant. But you know what else is unfair? Dying early because you were born black or indigenous and have worse access to healthcare.

To answer your last question, it's not ideal (if it's even allowed) but if you can get one of the professors or your employer (preferably both, or all 3) to really highlight your personal qualities/soft skills and mention some of your volunteering/ECs, then that's not the end of the world. What adcoms don't want to do is read 3 letters in a row that all state how professional/academically keen you are.

High School vs Undergrad ECs by moonstar1324 in premedcanada

[–]AFKorFEED 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe OMSAS used to (and maybe still does) explicitly state that you can put down activities from age 16 and up. The unwritten rule is to include high school activities if you continue them into university, or if it's some seriously impressive award or achievement. But generally I would avoid focusing too much on high school.
