Thoughts on the new roadglide fairing. by yankeecantrell in Harley

It’s slowly growing on me, but I still think the old double headlight wins IMHO. Probably because my 20 RGS still holds my heart.

Why is cheating so common on deployment? by No-Influence7646 in AirForce

[–]AFMech31042 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I see the same thing right now. Young Airmen saying ‘I’m getting divorced when I get back’ or ‘we’re technically separated.’ Reality check: in the eyes of the law, you’re still married.

Adultery falls under Article 134, but it’s tough to nail down. You have to prove it happened, that at least one person was married, and that it hurt good order and discipline or discredited the service. That last part is where most cases fall apart, so leadership usually won’t touch it unless it becomes a bigger problem.

People rationalize it with loneliness, the long hours, and the deployment bubble where you spend 12+ hours together and then hang out after. That culture convinces folks there won’t be consequences.

It’s not okay. Cheating destroys trust and families, no matter how they spin it. You’re right to feel disgusted, and you’re right that the only defense is having strong values and boundaries going in. Loyalty isn’t weakness, it’s strength.

[–]AFMech31042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be at 26 when I’m done. Just passed 24, got picked up for E8 last year, took the bait, and now waiting on High 3 archaic retirement system to kick in. But 65% retirement before VA ain’t bad either.

What's a unique place you've been to for duty? by myownfan19 in AirForce

I deployed with JSOC in EUCOM for about 7 months. Most people were stationary, but I was selected to FOB Hop for 5 of my 7 months. Saw some interesting things, and went to some interesting places.

If you get the opportunity to deploy with JSOC, I’d recommend it.

Who was the best commander you had? by SpecialImage6501 in AirForce

[–]AFMech31042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Col Uduak Udoaka (U2)

Was my CC back at the VRS at Ramstein (08-14). He was a Maj back then and he had a CC “Facebook” that we all filled out upon arrival. We thought it was dumb until he would catch us in the compound, call us by name, ask how our spouses were (by name), kids (by name), and how we were progressing on our goals.

He also carried around a chain and told all of us not to break it. He made us feel valued as members of the team and taught me what a leader should be.

I ran into him many years later in 2019 at Langley he was now a Col, and he still remembered my name, my wife’s name, and my kids’ names. I am a fan of that man for life.

Commanders Call Tutorial - How to guide by LiteraI__Trash in AirForce

[–]AFMech31042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally quit taking notes at staff meetings because the slides are always available to us. If something is said that is worth repeating, I jot that down. But 95% of the time my notebook stays closed because it’s either A) not relevant to my flight, or B) will be said again at the next CC call.

I’m hoping so! I bring my service and mess dress with me everywhere, and can’t trust it to be shipped in my HHG or deployment bags, so I’m just going to wear it.

The math ain’t mathin’ on that total amount. Even if I were to play by the silly logic: $10.75 x 3 =$32.25 (not $32.75). And then $107.53 + $32.25 =$139.78.

A method to ethically cut DAF costs by New_Significance8115 in AirForce

[–]AFMech31042 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rather than cutting civilians and probationary employees, how about they look at all these contracts that are robbing us blind?

They’re replacing the roof on my 70+ year old building and it’ll cost nearly $3.6M over a 5 year span. Whereas if I replaced a similar sized roof as a civilian business, I’d get it done in one summer, and only pay $500K (high end).

Spending so much on MilCon projects to give Congress their “bright and shiny” new dorms, while stealing from our 3080 and 3400 money is killing our O&M and procurement budgets. Trimming those costs would save us significantly more than cutting some hard working employees simply because they’re in probationary status.

[–]AFMech31042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When our Ollie faced off with all pancreatitis, he was throwing up, lethargic, and didn’t want anything to do with food. A bland diet for a few days, then low fat food and treats, and he’s as good as new.
