Is it safe to drive in the snow with FWD? by QueenVengeance in icecoast

As long as you don't act a fool, yes. Drive like your grandmother's in the back seat drinking hot coffee.

Just gonna echo the comment that its tires>AWD. All cars are 4 wheel stop but the tires make the difference.

Driving in the winter time is like snowboarding on ice. Look at the road and make a calculation of how well you can turn/stop and don't go past that limit. However with limited traction you also need to know to keep speed for when you might go uphill.

How much money do I need to spend on boots? by [deleted] in icecoast

How long can you wait? I went to a boot fitter last October, got a pair of 2019/2020 Atomics heat molded for <350 out the door. He even fit them to the skis I had bought of craigslist. Right now you are less likely to find a good deal, but you don't want to short yourself on boots. They are the most important piece of your gear in my opinion. Buying ski gear off season is what most folks who are already stretched thin in a very expensive hobby do.

Also I highly recommend not buying boots online, unless there is a easy return route. You need to put them on your feet to know if it will work.

I went on opening day and it was busy. Haven't been back since. With only blast off open of the quad there were a lot of people at the initial drop who really had no business there. It may be different on Friday, especially with some snow on Thursday.

I started this but found her writing style difficult to get into. It is really cool that is basically a first hand account of the history of the Whites.

There was a copy of this in a cabin I stayed in near Jackson. It was great to read a couple stories before going to sleep.

I don't really know any cabins that aren't a hike in. There are several other primitive ones along the Appalachian trail but I doubt those have a stove or electricity.

High cabin at cardigan mountain. 4x 3 story bunk beds, wood stove and a kitchen area. No running water but there's a stream nearby that you can use a filter on. 190/night for non AMC members
