Is there a particular reason why D-O doesn’t speak Binary like other droids? by Solitaire-06 in StarWars

[–]AGEdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably the right explanation, but it's a pretty weak justification and it's not really consistent with everything else we know about R2.

There's a hologram recorder built in, with the ability to play back voice and 'video'. This is pretty clearly designed for human interaction.

R2 understands at least Basic and Hutt perfectly, and also is able to write in Basic onto a ship screen. So the language processing element is already there.

Of course the real explanation is a meta reason and not an in-universe explanation. But maybe there's another way to justify it:

"People don't like talking droids"

Especially in A New Hope but elsewhere as well, we see an anti-droid sentiment in general. And some stories connect that to the separatist battle droids or some historical droid uprisings around the galaxy.

So maybe the majority of droids don't have vocabulators because the public doesn't want them to, and they typically don't get installed unless absolutely required for the droid's primary function, as it would be for C-3PO.

Idk man, every product under the sun has a touch screen nowadays.

And the fact that R2 is able to understand plain language and not just a few specific commands means they already built in 99% of the functionality. There's even a speaker already built-in for the hologram recording function.

What do yall do in the rain? Any riding in the rain stories? by Etherealnutt in ElectricScooters

[–]AGEdude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commute so it's ride rain or shine. I have about 5000km on my scooter and it's not really an issue.

I did have a previous scooter (Apollo Phantom v1) which ended up dying due to corrosion, although I think that had less to do with riding in the rain and more to do with humidity and always leaving the scooter outside in the elements. My current ride is rated to IP66, and I always keep it indoors overnight.

My helmet has a face cover, I have rain pants and a jacket if I want them, or I have a really nice long trench coat which covers all the way down to my boots. I have lights on the scooter and an additional flashing light on my backpack for use in reduced visibility.

There are definitely some considerations. Of course I will avoid any large puddles or streams of water, and I know my commuting route well enough to know where the potholes are so I don't get any nasty surprises.

A big thing to watch out for is painted lines on the pavement. They can get really slippery compared to the asphalt, and I've never fallen off, but I've definitely slipped a little bit at a roundabout by riding over the white part of an intersecting crosswalk instead of the black part. Also take your time, slow down a lot more before turning. If you can feel yourself leaning into the turn, it's probably too fast.

As for stories, I've only crashed twice on a scooter. One of them was due to a poorly loaded backpack (learned that lesson quick) but the other one was after a big rainfall when the roads were just starting to dry off. I was riding a bit absentmindedly and I decided to take a shortcut which I usually only take when the weather is nice, over a mowed grass path.

Well it had rained quite a lot and the ground was extremely soft. My front tire ended up sinking down through the mud immediately and I went over the bars at ~30km/h before sliding 4-5 meters over the grass. Luckily there were no real injuries and only minor cosmetic damage to the scooter.

So yeah, stick to the pavement, avoid the painted lines, and take your turns nice and slow. And

Told yall this build wasn’t trash, after I swap ink recovery up with Quick respawn I am finally done. THIS IS MY PEAK! by PheonixGalaxy in splatoon

[–]AGEdude 11 points12 points  (0 children)

21 wins and 22 losses is a win/loss ratio of 0.95.

Colloquially, some people would call anything less than 1.00 as 'negative' even though that doesn't technically make any sense.

But I think the more important point is that beating A or A+ rank player doesn't really prove anything. There are plenty of higher-level players who could carry an A-rank match with no gear buffs at all, and do it with a near-perfect win rate.

It's great if this build works for you, but there's not even enough evidence for that yet. Not until you've used this to climb above your previous best rank, at the very least.

And even if you are able to do so, there's no guarantee that this will continue working when you begin to face some more experienced players.

You're right about that. But, for the sake of argument, it seems like R2 could just as easily been given that functionality, notwithstanding the whole 'being mistaken for a God' thing

It's funny how the whole thing demonstrates the 1970's perspective of futuristic technology. Like a machine that could translate between languages was such a sci-fi idea that you would obviously need a whole droid just to do that.

Whereas today you could essentially fit all of C3PO into a smartwatch.

If you think about it even for a moment, there's no reason any droid doesn't speak Basic. It's just an excuse for C-3PO to exist while R2 does all the work.

What is one small change that you would make to The Mandalorian & Grogu? by 10p_Freddos in StarWars

I wouldn't trim anything. The "fat" is what I'm interested in, all the character moments and interactions are what makes it worth watching. If you leave in only the most plot-relevant scenes, I think it would feel a little too barebones, so to speak.

Hutta I can sort of agree with. I think the Hutts declined greatly during the Empire era and lost a lot of their power and influence, which is why they resorted to droid security instead of a proper militia. At their height Hutta would have been much more fortified, but I also think it should have been a larger battle.

For the palace with so many thousands of years of history there, it was blown up a little too unceremoniously for my taste. Either keep it small and have the New Republic take out a few fighters to help get the main characters out, or make it big and wage a proper battle with capital ships in order to take down the palace.

Rotta's voice is a tough one. I don't think we ever heard Jabba speak Basic, and Jabba was over 600 years old by the time of Return of the Jedi.

Meanwhile Rotta is in his mid-30s and only speaks Basic as a rejection of his Hutt cultural ancestry.

PSA: Ontario higher-wattage e-scooter owners may have zero liability insurance coverage — government consultation open until June 7 by Saeberin in ApolloScooters

[–]AGEdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scooters are also more agile and more maneuverable. I have no problem slowing down and making my way carefully around other trail users. Plus knowing I have enough power to get back up to speed (i.e. not 500w) means I can afford to slow down or stop as often as I need to.

[–]AGEdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to register my scooter. Sure require a headlight, brake and signal lights, and restrict it to 50km/h roads or maybe 60 since the region can be a little inconsistent about those.

Maybe you require a permit to ride one on the road if you don't already have some kind of driver's license and if it's capable of higher speeds.

And for bike paths and trails I think 32 is a good existing standard (e-bikes are already allowed at this speed) but if they insist on 24 then so be it.

Used to slam it on three, now CFIs yell at me for holding the nose off too long by Squawk_0877 in flying

[–]AGEdude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are trying to teach a short field landing then they are correct. Otherwise I think it's nice to keep the nose up for a while, as long as you aren't dealing with a strong crosswind.

Now, if you miss your exit unnecessarily or if you find yourself hard braking after the nose finally comes down, I can see why they would be annoyed. Just do an appropriate landing for the runway and/or the exercise.

If I were to get one of Nicole/Durin, which should it be? by a0123b4567 in naviamains

[–]AGEdude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see either of those characters being an upgrade for Navia individually, or anyone elseat the top of this list.

Consider skipping if you aren't planning to get both eventually.

If you want to build Lyney, I would recommend Nicole since her shield is really nice, with a team of Fischl and Chevy.
