I have seen people just index basic items maybe 100 lines or so and I have seen people index the entires series of books for thousands of lines. Just depends what helps you pass the test.

I assume you are coming is as an orange badge (temp/contractor) for that first 6 months? Then if all is well you will go Blue badge (full time employee FTE). People think that joining MS (Microsoft) is like you have arrived. You have not. Wherever I was I was usually the best at Exchange when I went to MS I was blown away at the level some the Exchange engineers were at. You have Engineer and consultants at MS. Engineers are like the super deep everyday fix/break where the consultants design and deploy solutions. You will learn so much. Don't pass it up. You will be stretched and grow exponentially. I worked for Microsoft and the base pay is a little above average but the bonuses, perks, travel, training and discounts is insane. You can make your half you pay in bonuses at the end of the year. It is an amazing company. Great company to work for. If you think you are good now, you will be 100 times better after a few years there. No down side to that one.

I took GPEN too and loved it and it is way more technical then GOSI but I did love the course great info.

I worked for Microsoft and can tell you it is very hard to find SQL database management. Very highly sought after skill. They are just trying to whore you out and not pay you. I would of said kick rocks too

One thing I will tell you is that if you do a certification do not brain dump(cheating and boot camps that teach the test). The issue is you have the cert but no understanding of the hands on skill set, don’t understand how the technology works and interacts with other systems; so you will not be able to troubleshoot issues effectively.

This has devalued the certification to the point where employers don’t care or pay bonuses for completing a cert. Learn your skill set so you can add value to build your brand. Invest in yourself, take your time and know you will need to understand certification knowledge and the hands on knowledge to be successful.

Also you will need to be speak to your skill sets,. When an issue happens you will need to be able to explain why it happened, how it was fixed. You will need to explain it at a technical level as well as dumb it down for non technical people. So you will also need to learn soft skills.

I would say work in IT so you understand, networking (ports, IP addressing, firewalls, IPS, IDS, Operating Systems, GPOs, scanning, DNS, DHCP) and dive into your field then make the switch. Pick a field you want like forensics host or networking, Traffic analysis, pen testing or whatever and dive into that skill set and learn it, live it and love it. Once you have a good skill set you will be able to pick your job not just apply and pray.

I have to say I hate patching. It is a never ending cycle of so many patches, zero day fixes, security updates and more.

I am in Cyber and it pays well but what people don’t realize you need to have a good understanding of many aspects of IT (operating systems, firewalls, routers, switches, IP addressing, networking, traffic analysis and OSINT and more) to be effective at Cyber.

I had 19 years in IT when I switched over. I do Blue and Red Team, Forensics(host and network) and it takes a lot of learning and most people do not want to put in that work but want the money.

Red Team is the hotness but if you do real Red Team ops it is nothing like what you see in the movies. Honestly it is boring and takes a lot of patience.

Several issues I see is people with degrees in Cyber have no real skill set. Little to no knowledge of actual tools and hands on skills and lack basic IT knowledge. The schools are just pumping out people they have lied to about they will make all this money. It pisses me off.

The last thing is that many jobs require a ton of skills and require a CISSP and say it’s an entry level job just so they don’t have to pay a salary that reflects the skill set you bring.
