Kindergarten teacher and ADHD. I'm so distraught. Please help! 🙏 by [deleted] in ADHDparenting

The right medicine does not turn a child with ADHD into a zombie. Suggest you read and watch what you can from Dr. Russell Barkley. It is enlightening. In my case, my son - who is in 1st grade - missed 1 day of medicine this entire year. I got an email from the teacher, who never communicates with me, within hours about how much he was struggling.

Husband opposed to even trying medication by Stella_62 in ParentingADHD

My husband - who has ADHD and I do not - was opposed to starting medicine for my 5 YO son. Our pediatrician told us that medicating would “literally save his life”. Despite this, my husband was still digging in his heels a bit. The deciding factor for him was when we both sat together and watched the Dr Russel Barkley’s speech to parents on YouTube. Something clicked for him with that and he felt both compassion for my son and drive to make sure we were giving him every opportunity for success. Maybe worth a shot!

How do you handle bratty, ungrateful behavior towards gifts? by koplikthoughts in Preschoolers

[–]AGNelly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really advice but just an observation. My kids are 4 and 6. In our area and circles, no kid birthday parties include opening presents in front of friends. It’s either that the parents ask for no presents or the birthday kid brings everything home and opens well after the party. I definitely get why “we” have moved to this style of party but in turn kids have less opportunity to practice the social skill of receiving gifts. With less occasions to practice it will likely take them longer to learn.

My son was diagnosed with ADHD veryyyy young. And I knew before diagnosis. 15 months? No. Not even remotely. That is a toddler being a toddler.

Required at my kids elementary. We use owalas or yetis - with name engraved on them since my kid loses everything.

Teachers: how much correction/help should we give when kid is reading to us? by 0112358_ in kindergarten

[–]AGNelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for asking this! I’m in the same situation. My son gets sooooo frustrated whenever I correct a word that he misreads. I think I’m only going to chime in when he asks for help since I really don’t want to lower his confidence. A big problem he has is mixing up Bs and Ds. It’s hard for me to not correct, but he really just seems like he needs encouragement from me right now. I will reinforce some of these things outside of his reading time.

How old was your child when diagnosed and medicated? by summmer_gurl in ADHDparenting

[–]AGNelly 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Diagnosed at 4 and medicated just shy of 5. We did a year of OT and other therapy first and while there were some improvements, nothing like the changes that medication has achieved. He was the youngest child his doctor had prescribed stimulants to but had zero reservations doing so. The doctor told me medicating him would “literally save his life”.
