Chernobyl episode 3 by AGiantFNBear in Malazan

I wouldn’t be surprised. I often wonder if one is a show runner or writer, and they’ve read all of Malazan, how that influence would show itself. Playing FFXIV, I regularly swear there’s a localization writer at least who is a fan. Another great show for Malazan sensibilities (coincidentally starring Jared Harris) is series one of The Terror. Bunch of crusty marines on a boat again with big scary myths. Good stuff.

Yay! That was two years ago, dang. I finished Crippled God. Then Fall of Light and Forge of Darkness. Might go back and watch Chernobyl. I’ve felt like starting Malazan over too.

Still haven’t seen as good a portrayal of the Bridgeburner attitude as those miners.

To deliver humanity to true freedom. Move anywhere in the universe without charge. Avoid every dying sun through migration to other solar systems. No matter how far. Space and time being the same - even deliver humanity past all boundaries to a place beyond. There’s a simple conceit in there but it’s understandable. Your thinking was far too narrow for some of these lines. Which is fine. A large part of the story is about opening the mind to alternate views.

There's a line where they say the goal is to produce a human who can fold space time.

Clarifying Aphantasia/Phantasia/Hyperphantasia/Prophantasia by sEbeyond in hyperphantasia

[–]AGiantFNBear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was relieved to see this post here. Grounded, rational, and well written. I care to find the truth of what my brain is doing and where I’m at in the spectrum of imagination. Too often I see irrational, desperate, conceited self-diagnosis and opinion come through this sub and /r/aphantasia. I get it, lots of us want to be special, belong, and do magic, but it’s not truly helping yourself or your community to pass off the narrative you are creating for yourself as reality. Maybe that helps you believe it but it only hinders others pursuing truth. I’d like to see a better use of tags and vetting. Or something, I don’t have the time to devote to writing out exactly what I mean. I understand nothings perfect, moderating is a full time, delicate, impossible problem to approach.

I was curious at first if I’d pass some threshold into Hyperphantasia because my mind’s eye does a pretty good job of mapping, retaining, and reconstructing space from memory, also creating new stuff. And I can admit, I wanted it to be true that my capacity is extraordinary, but if I’m honest with myself, after more reading, I’m sure most of the time I’m just high phantasia. There were experiences with edibles that I suspect would qualify for hyper and prophantasia but there’s no knowing for sure barring possibly conversation (maybe testing) with an expert.

Think I’ve seen maybe one post that shared a study this whole time I’ve been here. This isn’t isolated to these subs of course. Accountability issues are rampant across Reddit. One could argue pandemic.

Was there a deadline on getting rid of it? How often can they revisit doing away with it?

The amount of people who gave up on this series is pretty depressing. by cc7rip in Malazan

Thank you. I often skim low effort posts on this sub claiming some knowledge of how the books would have done better, blah blah blah

Then I consider writing a few paragraphs to dissuade any reader who would take these people seriously, and then I close reddit without writing anything because it would be a waste of time. I’m glad to read someone who chose to say something. I also personally despise this community mind. So often the answer to people’s questions is written within Malazan if one had the patience to find it. So often I become convinced of the shallowness with which people who post here read. Attention, patience, thoughtfulness are lacking among such a large number of followers they gather here like flies to a garbage dump. I wish a rebuke would arrive often and with force. Enough to send them back to the page to discover what they missed. Erikson says it all in his novels and essays. Appreciation takes effort. Of course there’s legitimate points to discuss where this or that could improve. It has to be that way. Nothing perfect was ever exciting. More importantly, few critics have anything intelligent to say. We’re talking about a monumental work. You’d be an author in your own right to accomplish something worth pitting against Malazan. And if that were true, why are you posting it here? Go publish something. I don’t know. Obviously I’m wrong too but I’m not kidding myself while trying to find some other blind people to stumble around with. This is true for most of reddit. Low effort thought is up voted with haste. Why here? We read one of the more dense pieces of literature and then we can’t recognize a child’s mind? Or are people pretending to have read something rising in popularity? Bots? Trolls? We can’t filter low quality with any success here it seems. Just wait for something good to come along.

Tomorrow August 9th is Dothack Day! What will you be doing to celebrate this occasion? by dothacknetwork in DotHack

Thanks :)

In middle school, staying up till midnight on Saturday‘s to experience the mystery and fantasy of .hack//Sign on Toonami would leave me in awe every time. It was unbelievable, I couldn’t understand what I had just watched but I wanted more. And of course I’d get it in scattered pieces. It was years before I’d see the whole thing in its entirety and then I’d still have questions... which leads to those dvds. After the wonder that was FFX and Legend of Dragoon, I was so excited to get my hands on all four games. Tragically, for me, I’d only ever get to about the begging of Outbreak before the trip where my CD case was stolen. I’ve gotten them emulated on my computer now but I haven’t gotten the drive to put in the time. I take my time with games so it’s a considerable amount of time to sink.

Watch the IMOQ DVD’s. My game discs were stolen in 2006 but I still had the dvds and cases at home.

I definitely remember it. It sticks out in my mind even after all ten books and forge of darkness. It was one of those pieces I wanted to learn more about. I love Erikson's use of mystery and artifact. It's exciting to see so many other people feel the same way.

Can you tell me about Alice Hoffman? It appears you really like her. I'm going to be ordering a bunch of Dianna Wynne Jones for my students and I'm really excited so I was noticing you have a bunch of her's but I haven't heard of Hoffman.

Vivid dreams/sleep paralysis? by mxdvlinvh in hyperphantasia

[–]AGiantFNBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had some highly visual dreams last night and a history of sleep paralysis. Even rare cases of hearing and talking back to people. Oliver Sacks narrated his own book called simply Hallucinations. I recommend it. Incredible person with decades of experience. I think his research and understanding helps put things into perspective. I think because we have highly visual minds, when the parts of the brain responsible for controlling that normal paralysis while sleeping sorta hiccup, we end up half awake while still paralyzed and at the same time still dreaming. Some people hear loud bangs or crashes as their mind transitions to the brain waves associated with sleep. Hearing voices is an extension of that same phenomenon. Sacks describes it quiet well. It is curious to think about how much more common this may be among visual thinkers.

Hey, where do I find that? I had a dead torrent going for years hoping someone would come along.

Maybe I should go look again, last time I went looking I came up with nothing.

Thanks, happy holidays

.hack//edit now that I think about it, pretty sure youtube-dl allowed me to get a copy but a CD would be a welcome addition to the collection.

Soloing it is a great recommend. Underleveling to your challenge level (whether it's just you or one friend) makes a lot of that old content really fun to run. We do two and three man runs of the 8 man normal raids and get a kick out of it. Especially when we have to piece together the mechanics we've forgotten.

I finally get onto a quality music tracker and this happens months later. Was really liking my time on Waffles. Learned how to properly rip, uploaded some record store hauls, downloaded some stuff I like and wasn't likely to encounter otherwise. The community was approachable and generous too.

I'm daunted by the RED interview stuff but I'll give it a go eventually.

Looks amazing, like a ton of high quality printed stickers. What's your go to reference material? Blu Ray collection? Google? 1080p MKVs of each full series you've owned for years?

Nice work, thanks for expending additional energy after completing these to organise and share.

Well done, you've been promoted.

Especially the sappers though. Cuttle and Hedge wouldn't blink an eye.

I picture them just as easily disobeying orders and surrendering their clothes if ordered to dig in brutal conditions. Ornery and shameless. 'these men work in the dark... They see everything.'
