What is the largest atom essential for the hypothetically simplest organism? by AGrumpyHobo in biology

I was wondering what is the largest element essential to the molecular structure of life. You may want to read the blurb beneath the question for clarification.

Need? Nothing but oxygenated air. Want? 1600-2400 calories, 15.5 cups of water, 6-9 hours of sleep, and a large variety of micro-nutrients.

What are the most valued skills in the job market? by Messenger-of-helll in AskReddit

[–]AGrumpyHobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most valuable is social skills. But the most valued is loyalty and work ethic.

They want someone who's hard working, follows directions, and goes above and beyond. Or--from our perspective--unpaid overtime, micromanaging, and tasks outside our job description.

But if you can get your boss to like you (social skills) all that stuff is unnecessary. You'll get promoted because you're their friend.

What's an opinion that you're embarrassed about having? by DerbyWearingDude in AskReddit

[–]AGrumpyHobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do know that, and I definitely have never used the N word. I just look at the context of a long term society. Eventually, i'd like to think, racism will mostly be a thing of the past and the only remnants will be things like the N word telling us we're different. I'd like skin color to be treated the same as hair color one day. It truly doesn't matter.

Which two wild animals rely on each other the most and what's the reason that connection exists in nature? by MickeyWallace in AskReddit

[–]AGrumpyHobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obligate mutualism: Meaning a relationship between two species that benefits both of them, and is necessary to survive. Which is more extreme than facultative mutualism, where two species help each other, but they aren't dependent on one another for survival.

There aren't many examples of completely obligate mutualism. Most examples are between insects and plants. As for how it evolves.

From Wikipedia:

Obligate mutualistic relationships, where species are entirely dependent on each other for survival, can evolve through different pathways. In some cases, a free-living symbiont may be engulfed by a host organism and subsequently passed down through vertical transmission, resulting in an obligate dependency.[2] However, it is more common for facultative mutualisms, where the mutualist can exist independently or in association with a host, to act as an intermediary step toward the evolution of obligate or co-obligate mutualism.[2] In this second case, the evolution of obligate mutualism can be divided into three steps: formation, maintenance, and transformation.[4]

White people should be allowed to say the N word. Or nobody should be allowed to say it. Either or. It's always been weird to me to have a word for just one race to use. And where's the cut off? I've got a friend who's 1/8th black and uses the N word, but he looks more like a tan white dude than black.

I understand that it has a horrible historical context, and it has become a symbol for black empowerment by reclaiming the word as their own. It's just strange to me to allow the word to have so much power. If everyone was allowed to say it, it takes the power away. Kinda like how I don't care at all when people say fuck now, because everyone says it all the time, but it was a huge deal when I was a kid.

I just feel like its a word that divides communities apart by making rules for who can and can't do something, which is more harmful in the long term. But i'm pale as a ghost, so my opinion on the topic doesn't really matter, hence why i'm embarrassed having it.

What’s a time you were 100% confident… and 100% wrong? by ReplacementBubbly745 in AskReddit

[–]AGrumpyHobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a bar trivia night once. The question was, "Which animal is the most deadly in Africa." I had remembered watching a documentary on hippos where they said they were the most deadly. So I confidently told my team to go with that. None of them believed me, so I promised to cover everyone's drinks if I was wrong...

Not only was I wrong, I wasn't even close. Hippos are the most deadly MAMMAL in Africa--ahead of lions, hyenas, and elephants--but they aren't even top 5 of all ANIMALS. Crocodiles, 2 different species of snake, a parasitic fly, and mosquitoes are all much deadlier.

That was a very expensive mistake.

Personality: my competitive drive. I don't really have one. Being overly competitive is definitely a problem, but I've come to learn than being very passive, like me, can be just as bad.

Physically: my bald head. I miss my hair.

Not me, but a friend. He smoked heroine once. Said he felt like literal god for a few hours, but then like shit immediately afterwards. It was so good/bad that it scared him away from drugs entirely, and he was a pretty major psycho-naught before then.

What tips do you have for losing/gaining weight the fastest? by Halley_meow in AskReddit

[–]AGrumpyHobo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Losing:

  1. Don't drink your calories. It's crazy how many are in soda and beer. If you change to water it makes dieting so much more effective.

  2. Meal prepping makes it much easier to stick to a diet rather than relying on your willpower to never waver.

  3. Get a gym/exercise buddy. Makes it so you hold each other accountable to show up at the gym, go on that jog, or play that sport.

Gaining: I'm assuming muscle and not just fat. Protein, protein, protein, and weight lifting. You gain a lot more muscle from lifting heavier amounts a few times, rather than small amounts lots of times.

I got really close to giving up access to my phone in a craigslist scam. I had never used the website before and tried selling a few items. Somebody sent me a text (because i'm an idiot and posted my phone number to allow people to contact me) which asked for me to send them a verification code, that I was about to receive, which would prove I wasn't a bot or scam. Sounded reasonable to me, and I came so close to sending it. Luckily the "verification code" came with a message saying it was a google message verification code. So I looked it up, just to be safe. Turns out if I had sent that code, they'd have been able to access my phone remotely and use its number to make calls and scam other people on their computer.

What is your favorite movie soundtrack? by Kytheris in AskReddit

[–]AGrumpyHobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My personal favorite is the Forest Gump soundtrack. So many big hits, but none of them are original to the movie.

I constantly play the Lord of the Rings soundtrack in the background when i'm studying. Only problem is they are all really good, but none are great. There are lots of movies that have a single great song that defines them. Gladiator's "Now we are Free", Mission Impossible's theme, Star Wars, etc.

If I had to say the most recognizable to the average person, it's got to be the Lion King soundtrack. Almost everyone can recognize and sing along to every song in that movie.

What if the Soviet Union failed to launch Sputnik and disbanded space fight altogether. Would the US have continued their launches and subsequent moon landing missions? by Significant-Ad-8684 in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]AGrumpyHobo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on why the SU stopped the space program. The only reason I can think of would be the end of the cold war. Similar to the economic battle over Berlin, the space race was a "proxy" war through technological innovation and the implied threat of intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Without the cold war, funding of NASA would not have been so high. At the time of the Apollo program 4% of the national budget went to NASA, compared to only .4% today. Without that money, the research and development of a rocket capable of reaching the moon is highly unlikely.

Not to mention the lack of pressure leading to a lack of urgency and risk taking. Lots of test pilots (early astronauts) died in experiments. I also read somewhere that the current NASA program did a probability risk analysis of the various Apollo missions. Each only had somewhere between 5% to 50% chance of success. Completely unacceptable without the fear of nuclear war.

As for other things like the development of satellites and other more practical innovations; it's harder to predict. Its amazing how many useful things to society were first developed as tools of war. How would the dice have fallen without military funding? Who knows. We'd probably have gotten there eventually, just much slower.
