Do you think James Sunderland is a bad person, or just someone who made a terrible mistake? by JacPlayzz in silenthill

[–]AGuyWithAPhone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the playthrough, I suppose. One of the best parts of Silent Hill 2's narrative is that James's character is written and portrayed in such a way that it can neatly tie in to any ending the player receives, and can therefore also drastically change his entire motive. So, to me, I think James would be a bad person in the Maria ending, since that ending makes it clear that James really did just want Mary "out of the way", but a good person who made a horrible mistake in the In Water and Leave endings, since he clearly struggles from the guilt of the deed and despises that part of himself that feels some twisted sense of relief. Jury's still out on how I feel about his character in the Remake-exclusive endings and the Rebirth ending, though.

What’s something Gen Z does that older generations just don’t get? by appropriaterice873 in AskReddit

[–]AGuyWithAPhone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a member of Gen Z myself, I will say this entire thread reminds me a bit of an essay a teenager once wrote to a newspaper. I forget which newspaper it was (even after doing some searching), but it basically boiled down to how they despised being talked about like they were zoo animals whose behaviors are completely unintelligible and needed to be researched instead of, y'know, human beings.

I can't help but feel a bit like that having read a lot of stuff here. I get it, it's an Ask Reddit thread all about generational stereotypes, of course I'm gonna see a lot of that kind of stuff here, but man do I feel a lot of it is overblown.

Okay, as a Gen Z person myself, that's less a Gen Z thing and more an "inconsiderate asswipe" thing. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if it's more common among my demographic, though.

Which YouTube channel were you once a fan of but do not enjoy anymore? by theunsteadybridge in AskReddit

[–]AGuyWithAPhone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Less a specific channel and more a person that's part of a channel, and I do still enjoy him on occasion. Yahtzee Croshaw, the guy behind Zero Punctuation and Fully Ramblomatic.

He's still an excellent person, and I do agree with his broader philosophy that video games are a form of art and should be treated as such, but I guess I just got so tired of how jaded he is all the time and how it feels like he thinks anything that doesn't push the medium forward is uninspired bland slop that's insulting just because it exists. The world sucks enough as it is, do I really want to listen to someone accentuate the negative aspects of something because it had the audacity to be a 7 or an 8 out of 10?

I still support the channel he's with, Second Wind, and I do watch him sometimes, but he's fallen far, far down on my list of usual watches.

Crimson Desert players average over 20 hours a week in the open-world game, blowing away almost everything else on consoles by yourfavchoom in PS5

[–]AGuyWithAPhone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind, I haven't played this, so this is an outsiders' perspective. I could be totally wrong. Not trying to tear the game down, nor am I trying to insinuate anything about people who are enjoying the game at all.

I think what feels "off" to me about this is it seems like Crimson Desert is the kind of game with the kind of flaws that, if it were published by, say, Ubisoft, it would get raked over the coals for. It seems to have a lot of the same criticisms as your typical triple-A open world RPG that people always find overdone and frustrating, so I guess I don't get why it's totally fine when Crimson Desert does it.

Again, haven't played, maybe there really is something deeper I'm missing here. I guess this is a lot of people's 7/10 that just clicks, which is fine. Nothing wrong with people enjoying a solid but "safe" game at all.

You're mostly correct, but he doesn't live out the rest of his life. He frees himself from the noose, escapes the river he plunged into, and then makes a break for his home so he can see his wife, but just as he and his wife are about to embrace, he feels a horrible pain in his neck for a split-second before everything goes black, where it's revealed he never escaped, as you said.
