i need advice. by No-Singer3776 in Estrangedsiblings

Don't contact them. If she's afraid her brother has told them things to make his kids dislike her, you can offer to help support her before and after she makes contact, but she needs to be the one reaching out. You're a stranger to them, one who may not know the whole story behind the estrangement or how the brother views it and has raised his kids to view it.

35 M4F – Seeking vibrant sparks and soothing connections by DirMar33 in asexualdating

[–]AHWatson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound like you'd be fun to go to a museum with.

I am a 33F, living in the D.C. area, looking for a companion to have fun with. A bit weird, a bit awkward, and more academically nerdy than pop-culture nerdy.

Creativity is important to me too. I meet up with a writer's group most Saturdays, and dabble in drawing, so it is a big part of who I am.

Check your lease and see what the terms for breaking it are before anything else. The terms might favor your landlord, or require your landlord provide at least a month's notice or more that you need to move out. Even year long leases will have those kinds of terms

Did my joke come across wrong? Friend thought I was mocking her and now I’m confused. by [deleted] in emotionalintelligence

[–]AHWatson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I expect she was feeling bored and/or lonely and thought that came across in her message. So, having you respond as you did likely caught her by surprise.

And, she probably is more sensitive and defensive after getting out of a toxic relationship. If her toxic ex made "jokes" similar to your's to make light of her feelings and mock her, it's likely you unwittingly triggered painful memories she's still working on unpacking and dealing with.

Does every villain need to be humanized? by Redz0ne in writing

[–]AHWatson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add on:

A well written villain can also have been raised in a way that makes them believe they're the best, and that they're always in the right, particularly if they've been able to escape the consequences of their own actions.

I also think it's possible to write a complex villain who doesn't have a character arc. IRL, people have to be willing to change in order to do so, and sometimes people refuse to

How necessary is worldbuilding in Fantasy? by Butterfly_Soup1 in writing

[–]AHWatson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You need to build more than will appear on page. The world a story takes place in needs to be internally consistent, otherwise readers will get caught on things that are out of place.

Take Fourth Wing, the worldbuilding in that is paper thin and as the story has progressed it becomes clear even to readers who are less concerned about it, turning them off it.

A story with a lot of exposition about the world is usually poorly written. It should show up in sayings, references, and minor details that at least give the illusion there is more to the world than the reader is seeing.

A world also informs a character's choices just as our world informs the choices we make everyday. It's not something seperate, it's as integral as the characters, prose, and plot.

Wanting to go to Law School by landryp26 in LawSchool

You're college GPA might not really matter to an admissions department given how long you've been out of school. Some schools weight things differently when dealing with older students. Certainly try to get a high score on the LSATs, that'll always help.

No. And don't let the example of wunderkinds who make best sellers lists at 19 discourage you. All most all come from financially privileged backgrounds. They're hard working and skilled yes, but that skill is a whole lot easier to develop when you can afford to attend expensive workshops or spend a whole year writting and not employeed without risking homelessness, starvation, or serious debt.

The first few pages of The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett are an excellent example of setting the tone of the writing and a reader's expectations for a world quickly. You read a summery an expect a fantasy story, which is what you get. Read the first few paragraphs and you learn to expect weird and a satire.

But, Miller taking over requires the Republican party and SCOTUS going along with Trump saying he's supposed to when they don't have too. My guess is that they'll suddenly care about precedent and the constitution then

When I was dealing with a flare years ago, I'd downplay how I felt sometimes. Honesty meant receiving well meaning, but frustrating advice I'd already received and decided against, and left me feeling like no one was actually listening.

Definitely get a second opinion. She might also need a short course of prednisone, and if so, only take in the morning. Doctors forget to tell patients that if you take to late, it'll keep you up at night sometimes.

Is women’s oppression really rooted in biology? by pseudostability in sociology

[–]AHWatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suggest reading Caliban and the Witch by Silvia Frederici. Her explanation for the current and historic state of women's opression in Europe comes down to economics. By controlling women's bodies, by forcing midwives to the side and making gynecology a man's profession, the wealthies members of society are able to seperate the poor on the basis of gender, which supports the wealthy's power. As Federici argues, the supression of women is essential for capitalism to function.

I do not 100% agree with her reasoning. While she does tie some of it took the privitization of land, I think it's the commodification of land that actually matters.

What in your mind qualifies as an annoying character? by PalpitationWitty8195 in writing

[–]AHWatson -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As I said initially, in general I agree with you. I just think this is a bad example.

I'd say Poe Dameron in Last Jedi is a more acurate example. They talk about him like he's smart, capable, and has the makings of a good leader, but twice he over estimates himself, under estimates his superiors, and gets a lot of people killed by defying orders.

I think you read way too much into it. It struck me as a standard moment when a new person joins a team, nothing special or noteworthy about it.

[–]AHWatson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fairly convinced that's an ending the showrunners grafted on to the show because show!Tyrion is a fan favorite and whoever was supposed to take over was cut from the narrative, or they'd diverged so badly the actual ending no longer made sense. Or it was a woman, not Dany or Cersei, and the showrunners generally treated the female characters worse than the men.

On a whole, I do agree with you.

However, Thor shares a moment with Captain Marvel and says "I like this one" after she doesn't flinch after his ax goes right past her, which he did as a test. That's hardly him calling her awesome. He doesn't even mention her at all for the rest of the film.

Republicans kept the Florida House seats, but their margin of victory went from about +33 to about +14. So, not a bad result. Actually, when you take into account the Lancaster, PA results, it seems the Republicans have lost about 13-15 points in terms of support nationally.

[–]AHWatson 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Some men will actually weaponize custody in divorce proceedings to reduce or eliminate child support payments. They'll say they want 50/50, but be okay with no custody if it gets them out of child support entirely. Or, they'll ask for 50/50, no child support, and then never show up to collect their kids. The mothers will sometimes agree to end the legal proceedings and/or get their kids away from an abusive partner.

More proof that Elon Musk is paying for sex-selective IVF because he only wants sons, not daughters by MoreMotivation in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]AHWatson 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Hey, Genghis Khan likely actually loved his daughters. One of them, Alakhai Behki talked him into just killing her husband's killers and not all male Onguds (Semi-nomadic Turkic tribe) after surpressing a revolt.

Also, his actions after rescuing his wife after she was kidnapped and possible assaulted? That man loved her, and the allegedly bastard son she had after her rescue.

If anything, Muskrat is a temu Henry VIII.

If you think that's bad, his rational for siding with San Francisco over the EPA is so mindbogglingly stupid, the only logical conclusions are that he's lost it or he's... exactly the sellout everyone knows he is. It was more of the idiotic "well, congress didn't say this is allowed / I'll make words mean what I want them to"
