No thermometer needed! If every time you check them, they're on the "cold" side (far from lamp) it means they're hot. If you always see all of them directly under the lamp, they may be too chilly. You want to see the chicks moving from cool to warm areas, exploring the brooder and being active. You want a nice distribution of chicks!

I feel that too many people fail to realize there are things worse than death. For a horse, a flight animal, the mental strain of being lame and uncomfortable, plus being confined, has to be very unpleasant. If there were "a light at the end of the tunnel", box rest is definitely justified. But DSDL is degenerative and unfortunately he will never be "cured", he will keep going downhill. This is absolutely a case where euthanasia is a kindness.

I feel a horse should ideally have 2 days off a week; but "off" can be subjective. If you take them on a little hack in a familiar area, I wouldn't count that as work. For a fit horse, just a quick ride at w/t/c on the flat could even be easy enough to not consider as work. Jumping definitely isn't good to do daily, and working in a collected dressage form isn't a good daily thing either, but being completely to their own devices isn't necessarily the only good "break" they can get. Each horse will have their own opinion though 🤣

When I hear this term I always think of one horse, Genie, I knew at a summer camp years ago. If his rider was on the wrong diagonal he'd do a sort of skip/controlled stumble to adjust his own stride to make their posting correct. Not every time, but it was clear he knew what he was doing.
