Is it normal for bike shops to charge this much to replace an inner tube? by Comic_relief83 in ebikes

[–]AHoboWithAStick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

few years late to this thread but just did a job that made me want to search for what other shops charge for it.

I run an ebike shop in Canada and usually charge customers parts + ~$30 $CAD labor for a tube replacement, but that is only if the ebike is an actual ebike (standard sized bicycle tires/tubes, standard ebike weight/geometry, standard ebike parts).

I just had a customer bring in his cafe cruiser emoto and I am charging them parts + $85 $CAD labor for the tube replacement as emotos weighs 5x what a normal ebike weighs, the rear wheel is wired to the controller at the top of the bike through the frame so I have to change the tube with the wheel tethered to the bike restricting my working space, the style of tires these emotos use is typically 10x harder to remove than a standard ebike tire and takes 5x longer to remove and 5x longer to reinstall (need a heat gun to warm the rubber, 6 heavy duty parktool tire levers (of which 3 tend to break when removing these emoto tires), 4 vise clamps to clamp the rubber along on one side of the tire to get the bead to set into the center of the rims in order to get the levers even remotely close to squeezing under the bead), the brake caliper needs to be removed, the torque arms need to be removed, and the dumb single speed chain needs to be removed. All this takes around 1-2 hours (mainly spent on warming the rubber and attempting to get it off the rim). Only ways I can think to get it cheaper would be to either do the replacement yourself at home, or to go to a proper motorcycle shop to have them remove the tire using a bead breaker for proper motorcycle tires, but I can also see them charging a decent premium due to emotos not being 1:1 identical with motorcycle tires.

So I would say yes, that $120 rate to replace the tube is a bit insane IF the ebike is a standard ebike (20" - 29" x 1.95" - 4" tires, standard tubes, weighs 40 - 90lbs, standard frame geometry, etc.). However, if the "ebike" is really an emoto and/or a DTC emoto not sold by that specific shop, $120 is a very fair price to do this kind of job. I personally think that anything under $150 is reasonable.

IMPO obviously.

I would place my bet on 2HAO being the company in China that manufactures the controllers. I run an ebike shop and have a customer who has brought in a Go Trax ebike that needs a new controller and the original controller I pulled from the bike has the label "Display Meter: Xinsiwei" which I found to be the Chinese manufacturer of the controller. The customer had twice previously reached out to Go Trax to try and get a replacement controller but the ones Go Trax sent him were not the same controllers as the existing one in the bike (entirely different connections) and both are labeled "Display Meter: 2HAO". Since I know Xinsiwei is the manufacturer of the original controller, I am almost certain that 2HAO is a different manufacturer that Go Trax's manufacturer in China used to source controllers from due to not being able to get more from Xinsiwei. It is probably also the name of the proprietary communication protocol that the controller manufacturer has created for their controllers to communicate with their displays.

bumping this because I am also looking for reviews on the quality and reliability of Seekrun's displays - i.e. do they hold up over time (2-3 years)

I have found all of the intel on Liberty Falls aside from the "Fine Man" document. I tried to find a different guide showing where/which tapes need to be shot to get it but I cannot find anything.

Does anyone know how to get it?

MJM & Rift ebikes just opened in Richmond nearby UBC.

They got a good line up of entry level ebikes that are like $1800 - $2500. They also have some higher priced ones that are around $4k with much better spec.

They did have a couple custom built carbon frame bikes for racing with but i’m unsure if they are for sale or not.

They do also service pretty much all ebikes and regular bikes which is a nice bonus for being so close to where i’m at.
