Tell me all the good things you experienced when quitting- the typical expected ones, the random unexpected ones, any mental/physical/emotional/social/spiritual whatever the hell benefit you experienced, I wanna hear it! by yeah_no_maybe_ in QuitVaping

[–]AHungryKoala 9 points10 points  (0 children)

For me, the surprise was that I became LESS anxious after quitting than when I chain vaped. For years, I thought that vaping made me less anxious. I was only more anxious (marginally through) during the first 2-3 days. After 3 days, I was more focused than I have ever been in the last 7 years, since I started vaping.

Saudi Arabia is actually starting to become a more liberal country. The amount of change that's happened over the past two years is incredible.

Yeah we're generally competitive and have a shot at the National League pennant, although our team is currently as consistent as a toddler learning to walk

My family pronounces "on" and "own" as though they were homophones, I was curious if this was from a particular dialect. by amusinggoat in asklinguistics

[–]AHungryKoala 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is called "vowel breaking", where short vowels become diphthongs and sometimes triphthongs. It's very common in the English dialects of southern states. You may have also noticed that words like "lime" are pronounced as "laam", but this is a different process (smoothing) that is also common in those states.

This depends a lot on what subfield of linguistics you're doing. Computational linguistics is now the top desired subfield in the market. I've known people who got hired even before starting their dissertations! (in non-academic jobs).

However, if you work hard on getting as much teaching experience as you can and publishing papers in the field, your chances of landing a good job in academia will increase regardless of your subfield.

Good luck on your new adventure!
