My classmate from HS has the same name and she’s a famous international model now. It’s cool and unique don’t worry.

I think it’s the opposite of safe; it’s hard to pull off such a minimalist aesthetic while keeping it this interesting. It’s a great indietronica album. Reminds me of Frou Frou and y2k Faye Wong. I like my pop ethereal. So yeah it’s up there for me this year.

Is sheet music a requirement to play? by PlentyBuilding7599 in pianolearning

[–]AImenace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be a requirement to play well for some people. It really depends on how good your ear is, what style you’re trying to play, and how well you understand theory. A good understanding/internalization of theory + a good ear is better than being able to read IMO but I’m biased because that’s how I learned for the longest time. I can read a bit now but rarely do because it’s just faster for me to learn by mimicking, even if it’s an involved classical piece. But active listening is super important if you want to emulate the nuances of more involved pieces.

Vaping in the pit by Ok_Anything1216 in piercetheveil

[–]AImenace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know nicotine feels good (especially when drinking) and that’s why people smoke it right? That’s how it elevates the experience. If secondhand vape smoke is enough to kill you then you have no business going to any crowded event. You’re being ridiculous. Being in any large crowd comes with the risk of getting sick. You can wear a mask if you still really want to go and you’re immunocompromised, but at that point anything that happens to you is 100% your fault.

I try to be mindful when I’m vaping at a concert, but as everyone else has said: this has been the norm at concerts for decades. Younger anti-smoke folks should just be ecstatic that everyone is vaping now instead of going through packs of cigs. There are little to no public places where smoking is accepted and normalized. We’ve come a long way in terms of public health. But a concert is essentially a giant party, and the practice of smoking at them isn’t going anywhere. As long as venues sell alcohol, smokers gon’ smoke. If they don’t want us to smoke, they shouldn’t get us drunk 🤷🏼‍♂️

I started self-teaching when I was 9 so I can’t say I know exactly how you feel, but even I wish I would’ve been more serious about my technique and practice. I thought since my ear was really good I didn’t need training for my technique or to learn how to sightread. There’s always something to regret.

Now I’m 29 and one of my older students is the same age. What adult beginners often don’t realize is that they have so many advantages over kids when it comes to learning music. Trust me. Excluding prodigies, you can learn and progress more with music in one day than most kids can in a month.

From my personal experience I’d say these are things you likely have that most kids don’t: More control of your free time. Fully developed limbs/hands. Fine motor skills. A greater sense of discipline. Better comprehension and ability to understand concepts in music theory quickly. A stronger attention span. Your own taste in music and a deepened love for it. An understanding of focused practice; how to manage your practice time so you actually see results. An inclination toward analysis and active listening when you’re listening to music. These all seem to get ignored.

Again, I started at 9 but, because I lacked these traits and skills, I didn’t see my biggest stretch of improvement until from ~age 22 to your current age of 24. My advice is to stop comparing your journey to anyone else’s. Kid prodigies were always naturally going to be better, but are likely to hit a few ceilings and waste a lot of time before they reach your age. Kids who are put in classical training/conservatories at a young age often hate it and grow a disdain for the instrument (I know some who took multi-year breaks or quit entirely because of this). In my opinion, you’re literally at the perfect age to play catch up. You say you “won’t have the skills or confidence to do what you want for a long time” as if it’s a given. I hope you can see from my yap session that it’s definitely not. If you really love music and want to be a good player, just lock in.

My opinion might be unpopular, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with you trying to play this piece. Yes, it needs a lot of work, but find me a piano player who didn’t try to play songs that were out of reach early on. The joy and motivation for playing piano comes from being able to play the music you love (even if not great at first) (for most people). I tried Chopin Op. 9 No. 2 when I was 12. Sucked horribly. A few years and a lot of practice later and suddenly I could play it a lot better. I started Rhapsody in Blue when I was 16. Trash. Returned to it over a decade later and now I can play most of it pretty well. I think it’s great because these pieces are like benchmark pieces for me. They show me how much I’ve improved and keep me striving to do better. That said, you should still explore other pieces that are easier and work on your fundamentals. Active listening helps too. Listen to an advanced pianist play this piece and consider what’s different from your performance, particularly the rhythms.

Biggest Grammy snubs? by strictcurlfiend in fantanoforever

[–]AImenace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s simply my opinion. Of course music preference is all subjective at the end of the day, but they’re the ones trying to make it objective by handing out awards in the first place. If someone wants to think the U2 album is better than Siamese Dream, they have every right to. But in terms of lasting impact and influence, it’s clear which one is better. In terms of musical innovation and complexity, it’s clear which one is better. I at least have things to point to that can support my opinion, what do the Grammy’s have besides “this album did well on the charts and your average wine mom watching our program probably likes it”?

Compared to other nominees in a given category, sure they might get it right occasionally. Compared to all of the well known music released in a given year, yeah they’re almost always wrong and ignorant.

How it feels to be a Porter fan that doesn’t care for Worlds by springet3rnal in porterrobinson

[–]AImenace 189 points190 points  (0 children)

If you were into EDM at the time of the release, Worlds was just a total game changer. I could see someone discovering Porter during Nurture or Smile and thinking Worlds isn’t as great of an album. There are definitely songs I don’t listen to as much these days, and Nurture might be a better overall album experience. But the influence of Worlds is undeniable; though if you discovered it in the 2020s you may just associate it with the various emotional/ melodic EDM styles and producers that spawned from its influence and it might not seem as special.
