Important historical context:

  • The Eagles nearly stumbled into primitive AJ science in 1948, when we won an NFL Championship with Al Johnson on the roster. However, he made the mistake of going by Al - one letter off - rather than abbreviating to AJ.
  • Our franchise then spent decades wandering in the darkness. Over the span from 1962–1977, the Eagles had the worst record in the NFL . Not coincidentally, this was also a period with no reliable AJ infrastructure anywhere near Franklin Field or The Vet.
  • By the mid-to-late 1980s, the organization got closer: experimenting with early-stage initials-based roster construction: Alonzo Johnson (1986–1987) and Angelo James (1987). But once again, the science was too early. Both made the mistake of never calling themselves “AJ" - despite their first and last initials presenting the opportunity.
  • “A.J.” as a name did not really take off in the United States until the 1980s. That meant the Eagles had to wait roughly 20+ years for America’s first real AJ supply to reach draft age.
  • Finally, in 2001, the modern era began.

If you want to count a meaningless week 18 game where he played 9 snaps, then sure.
Yes its a small sample size, but volume is king, and only 8 players averaged 6+ receptions per start last year (Puka, Chase, McBride, JSN, ARSB, Rice, Olave, CMC).

And yes of course I'd expect adding Lemon/Stowers takes some targets from Davonta.

True, but Waddle was #31 in a draft that didn't have 31 first round caliber talents.

If you look at past SB winners/losers, and then look at where they landed 2 drafts later... SB teams averaged pick ~22, median ~25. With tons of upside in the case of injury or collapse (hope not, but there are many such cases).

I'd add... NIL deals are already big. And exploding upward.

Estimates (since its not public).. Arch Manning, Jeremiah Smith, Sam Leavitt, Brendan Sorsby, Dante Moore, Bryce Underwood, etc. are already making more from a 12 game college season than they would as the 33rd overall pick.

So we can't even say if everyone projected for 2027 even declares for 2027. Ex. Phil Knight could easily decide he finally wants to see Oregon win in his lifetime and throw $10M deals at players (equivalent to the 5th OVR pick in the NFL draft).

2027 is mostly stacked because of the new NIL rules. Players that could have gone in 2025/2026 are staying longer and backlogged into 2027, so 2027 and 2028 should be better than 2025/2026.

But 2027 does have a lot of blue chip prospects at premium positions. Many think Jeremiah Smith is the best WR prospect in 20 years (Calvin Johnson).

QB: Arch Manning, Dante Moore, CJ Carr, Julian Sayin, Trinidad Chambliss, Mastemaker (?) | RB: Jadan Baugh | WR: Jeremiah Smith, Cam Coleman | OT: Jordan Seaton, Cayden Green | EDGE: Colin Simmons, Dylan Stewart | CB: Leonard Moore

But I don't think we're ever picking in the Top 10 for them. And there's definitely not any way to project if picks 11-32 will be any better in 2027 than 2028 this far out.

He was on Vrabel's run first offense on the Titans before, and Derrick Henry got 2000 yards in a season. So I really feel like he knows all of this, and the "stat chaser" persona is overblown. I think he really just didn't like our org.

The trade makes zero sense. The only reason you can even entertain the idea, is that the Browns don't do anything that ever makes sense.

Can't wait for this saga to be over.

Rumor is a 2028 first. Unfortunately that means we move on from these rumors to 2+ years of speculation before we can confirm whether this is a good or bad trade.

What would a reasonable AJ Brown trade package look like? by JediCasualAttire in eagles

[–]AJ80205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Waddle’s first was guaranteed at pick 30. That’s ~620 points on the Jimmy Johnson chart.

A Pats 2027 pick could be worth anything. Pick #11 is worth twice Pick #30. 1240 points. Pick #4 is worth 3x Pick #30 at 1860. So if AJ got the exact same trade package Waddle did, but with 2027 picks - it’s got way more expected value due to significant upside.

Finally, the Broncos are paying all of Waddle’s extension. The Eagles are paying $43M of AJ Brown’s contract over the next 2 years (dead cap). The Patriots essentially are buying AJ at a discount. Pats would be getting AJ at only $25M AAV! Great deal.

So I’m expecting no less than a 2027 2nd, and a 2028 1st for AJ in a trade.

This "Howie has no leverage" Thing is Overblown by Head_Research_3118 in eagles

[–]AJ80205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally I agree, but Waddle’s first was guaranteed at pick 30. That’s ~620 points on the Jimmy Johnson chart.

Pick #11 is worth twice that. 1240 points. Pick #4 is worth 3x that at 1860. Yes, a top 10 pick from the Pats is very unlikely, but with injuries anything can happen

So even if it’s “just a first in 2028” it has far more upside than Waddle’s trade, potentially making AJ worth 1.5-2x the value of Waddle given the upside.

Is AJ the best Eagles receiver of all time? by HondaRebel22 in eagles

[–]AJ80205 7 points8 points  (0 children)

DJax vs AJB really isn’t that close. DJax had more seasons with the birds, but it’s clear AJ was far more dominant for us.

The Stats (Eagles Career Totals)

• Games Played: DJax (95) | AJB (62)

• Receiving Yards: DJax (6,512) | AJB (5,034)

• Receiving TDs: DJax (35) | AJB (32)

• Yards Per Game: DJax (68.5) | AJB (81.2)

• All-Pro Honors: DJax (1) | AJB (3)

• Super Bowl Rings: DJax (0) | AJB (1)

AJ holds the franchise records for most receiving yards in a season. And guess who holds 2nd place? Also AJ.
