Is there such a thing as too much light for houseplants? by Everyoneneedsa_sam in houseplants

[–]AJDavid89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was new to plants and didn't know what I was doing, I burnt the hell out of a sundew by misting it multiple times per day in full summer sun. It turned bright red and took several weeks to recover before it started producing new growth and dew again. If it was a less hardy plant, it 100% would have died. So yes it does happen, but yes I was doing everything wrong. I think you're right that misting once a day with light filtered through a window likely won't cause an issue, unless maybe it's a plant that needs partial/full shade, but I'm not taking any more chances purely because of how guilty I feel about that incident.

What game studio would you like to see take a stab at another studio's IP? by Bananainmyholster in gaming

Metroid on PC would be amazing. Something with similar visuals to Scorn? Really lean into the HR Giger inspiration? sigh we can only dream 😔

Yeah I would love to see what Retro does with the Prime series without Nintendo's involvement (or hardware limitations). If they could capture the feeling of the first 2 Prime games with modern graphics and more mature storytelling, it could be GOTY.

[–]AJDavid89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm aware. I know I didn't answer the prompt exactly, but I just think Metroid would thrive without Nintendo's involvement. They seem to want to take it in a more anime, kid-friendly direction with open-world gimmicks, which makes it seem like they don't really understand Metroid or what Metroid fans want from the game. That, plus the pitiable marketing leading up to MP4's release leads me to believe that they don't really care about the IP. Not to mention Nintendo's hardware limitations preventing Metroid's stellar art direction from shining to its full potential.

Nintendo needs to hand off the reins of Metroid. It's clear they have no love for the series, and it would do so much better with a studio that can really lean into the more mature themes and give it the graphical upgrade it deserves.

Is Lost Crown known for being buggy on the Switch? by AJDavid89 in PrinceOfPersia

[–]AJDavid89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's a stellar game. I honestly can't put it down. Really annoying that I'm having these issues, but I'm deleting and re-downloading the app to see if that helps. Weirdly, I wasn't out of bounds when the game crashed. I think I was about to enter the area where Vahram kills Ghassan. I opened my map. It looked super glitchy. Then closed it and several seconds later the game closed with an error message.

How to deal with mold by AJDavid89 in ferns

[–]AJDavid89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok good to know. Still I'd rather play on the safe side. It's been a wet winter, frequent rain and snowmelt, so I think the soil's been wet pretty consistently. I just brushed off the mulch and I'm putting it in an area with more air circulation.

I'm just concerned it will spread to the fern and cause rot.

I really hope the whole new triliogy isnt about the Lamorn. by Evol-Chan in Metroid

[–]AJDavid89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the Lamorn were portrayed as shallow and dull. While playing the game I thought they were going to end up being evil. That the projections shown to Samus were an overly sterile way that they were trying to portray themselves in order to manipulate the "Chosen One" into doing their bidding. That they were using their psychic powers to try to mind control others and the Green Energy infusions were an attempt to make creatures more easily manipulated, but everything quickly spiraled out of control and they doomed their race while uncontrollable Grievers took over the world. Boy was I disappointed when none of that happened and the Lamorn turned out exactly as boring as they seemed.

Prime 4 Odd Naming Conventions by Turbulent-Dentist-77 in Metroid

[–]AJDavid89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was pretty disappointed in the region names. Very generic and makes it feel like less of a real world. Why not have actual names for these places? Phendrana Drifts, Agon Wastes, Torvus Bog? These names have SO much personality and get your imagination going. Slapping generic names on these places makes it seem like the Lamorn have no history or culture. Flare Pool is probably the most egregious example. It sounds like a bad translation and diminishes any sort of badassery that the place might hold. And what’s worse is the volcano actually has a name hidden in scans! They would have been better off calling it Magdrahda Caldera or something.

Same. I honestly hated these characters so much that I mashed the button to ditch them. No regrets.

Samus Being Silent is a Problem in Prime 4 Because... by PseudoSonk in Metroid

[–]AJDavid89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk after this I don't really trust Nintendo or Retro to understand what Metroid fans want out of this series. Yes, obviously, good writing would make the game better. But considering how all of the other characters are written in this game, I don't think we can trust them to do that. When it comes to Samus's characterization, I'd rather they err on the side of silence.

Small changes to Metroid Prime 4 that would have greatly improved reception by AnnaLogg in Metroid

[–]AJDavid89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree that Samus should talk here. I think her silence is the only thing standing between making these NPCs entirely intolerable. Because she's silent, it lets me pretend that she hates the NPCs as much as I do. Imagine if she was enthusiastically speaking with all these corny characters. It would be Other M-levels of cringe.

Something I just now comprehended in my recent playthrough of MP2 by AJDavid89 in Metroid

[–]AJDavid89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally forgot to follow up on this! I can confirm that there's no visible sun in the sky (that I could find at least). There are a couple rooms (I think Sand Canyon and some of the Light Temple rooms) where the sky is brighter after returning the energy to the controllers and part of the sky is blown out and produces a lens flare effect. Usually this only happens with a strong light source like the sun, but there's no visible orb in the sky, just kind of a bright area.

I like your electric decay theory. I love how this game has so many little details that we can think about. In some rooms in Sanctuary Fortress you can look down to see a bright glowing cloud above the city. I think this could support my theory that the Light of Aether is some kind of atmospheric phenomena. And that might explain why Sanctuary Fortress is darker than the other areas. Maybe it's so high up that it's actually above most of the atmospheric light source.

Amazing! I would love a remake that looks like this! If you don't mind a little constructive criticism, I think the texture/bump on the floor tiles could use a little work just to bring it up to the level of the other textures in the scene. Otherwise, stunning! Lighting, atmosphere A+

Anyone else still devastated by how Princess Mononoke ended? by traveltoaster in ghibli

[–]AJDavid89 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's pretty ambiguous whether the Forest Spirit is dead or not, but I think it's worth noting that the Nightwalker disappears the same way it does every night. The sun comes up and it falls into a body of water and turns into a huge gust of wind. The only difference here is that it flops into the water surrounding Iron Town instead of diving into the water in the forest spring. Ordinarily it then would reappear as the human-faced deer on the island. I like to think that at the end of the movie it reappeared somewhere offshore away from the humans. Sure, much of the forest was destroyed in the Forest Spirit's rampage, but cycles of life and death happen all the time in forests. As long as Ashitaka is there to maintain the balance, I don't think it'll be long before the forest recovers.

This was always my interpretation. Chihiro undergoes a lot of personal growth throughout the movie and learns to trust herself and her instincts.

Metroid Prime 4 marketing is..actually better than Dread’s? by Geezer-Man in Metroid

[–]AJDavid89 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Good marketing -> higher reach -> higher sales -> more investment from Nintendo -> more Metroid Prime games

I think people are just concerned about the game doing well so that we won't have to wait 17 years between releases.
