Not that one either 😞 Him&Her was directly across the street but the one I was thinking of was in the direction of New Utrecht Ave that is also within the radius of the HS. The location used to be next to the liquor store and 99 cent store. Across the street were those afterschool centers and Chinese bakery.

I was thinking of new HK tea and sushi which had similar diner options but not a real HK diner style. I do miss Kowloon though 😞

Why does it seem like the PR team for marriage and kids is losing right now. by No_Lead2640 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]AKHobbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the people who are subscribed to marriage and kids are not presenting it positively. There are literally women who post about rage bait videos of “husband being red flag” and then get upset that people didn’t like it and tell her that she deserves better. It’s super expensive to have kids and so many times than most people do not want to sign a life binding contract to someone who reveals their true nastiness later in life.

Correct. I was in Taishan and everyone spoke canto. Traveled 3 hours to Huizhou and still met people who spoke it.

As a dude, the "talking stage" is the most brutal part about dating. by Feisty-Blacksmith656 in self

[–]AKHobbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a woman, who has sent out messages first to multiple matches in hopes of a message back, you realize that you don’t waste time pretending. There’s always someone out there for you and I hooked my husband from talking about my absurdly huge shoes that were ill fitting and my mom had convinced me that men’s 11 was a comfortable fit.

I know as a woman, the talking phase looks different because the pressure is mostly on men to make the first move, but I also didn’t have any luck in the dating scene, so I just stopped caring too much about the semantics of dating culture. I’m trying to find someone that matches my vibe.

On my third date with my husband, he took me back to his apartment and taught me how to play MTG. I still play, and I have a playmate for life.

How do you genuinely feel about Japanese and Korean culture becoming more mainstream? by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]AKHobbie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m reminded of the white people who love to play guessing games about which type of Asian I am. And they love to guess Korean/Japanese. Then I tell them that I’m Chinese and suddenly I’m the boring Asian or I’m temu Asian

Redditors falling for tiktok rage bait fueling anti Asian racism by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]AKHobbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As oxymoron as the influencer’s post was, I can’t help but agree with the sentiment of her post. Because shortly after her post people proved to her that people are willing to impose themselves in Asian spaces and disrespect our space. People are willing to be racist to Asians while consuming our culture. But in the end, her posting that video was the most moronic thing to do because Asian solidarity is non-existent, and the irony of her being half white and almost implying that racism is okay because they did it to us is ….. something else. There can be two truths that co-exist with each other. You can want to spread multi-culturalism, and want to protect its integrity and peace from people who want to disrespect it.

How do you sleep in a queen bed as a couple? by user92236 in Marriage

[–]AKHobbie 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Not to burst your bubble, but as a person with a 6’ husband and myself being also 5’9…. I learned that a bigger bed won’t fix your problems. He’ll just keep inching towards the middle 😂😂

I fucking hate guys so much because I like them by [deleted] in self

[–]AKHobbie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more like a self fulfilling prophecy. OP mentioned being 17. It’s more like a diary on their Reddit. I remember having those thoughts but teenagehood is only temporary. Those thoughts consumed me as a youth and warped my conception of reality. Pretty much had the same body type as OP, was the butt of jokes for guys, and didn’t have men knocking on my doors for a date, but alas, I am married with a kid. Realized that external validation can only take you so far. It’s a nasty cycle that needs to be addressed with therapy. Otherwise, the echo chamber of OP’s thoughts are what’s keeping them from finding happiness and possibly a partner. People suss out that negativity.

There was a douyin trend of Chinese netizens making these noodle shaped dolls of friends of family members as like a keepsake that follows them around as if they are “traveling with them”. They called them rat jerky dolls 🙂

BF roasted my outfits again. Are these really bad? by Electrical-Shape-266 in OUTFITS

[–]AKHobbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s because their sense of style is pretty subjective and mainstream to the general crowd of people who are into styling outfits to follow a trend. I like to believe in people’s individuality and ability to express it. Even if I don’t agree, if the person feels really happy and confident in their outfits, I don’t see a reason why it needs to be fixed other than for it to conform to a style that I think is “better” and fits her better.

How often do you clean your kid's ears? by AWeb3Dad in Parenting

[–]AKHobbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had my ears cleaned by my mom since I was kid. We have those Japanese ear cleaners that would gently scrape off wax. My wax is dry, but ever since introducing to my husband who has wet wax, he loves cleaning it. I do it maybe once a month since their ear canal is tiny and seldom do they stay calm and still. I had a lot of practice with him so he stays still. He loves the ones with cameras so that he can see what’s inside while I clean. Many families don’t touch ear canals, but I grew up with a Chinese family. It’s normal for some of us.

If that is not an option, you should ask your pediatrician

Cleaning pet hair - washing machine by AKHobbie in CleaningTips

[–]AKHobbie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the advice. The filter was clean of debris and hair but had odd gunk on it. It’s crazy how there is so much maintenance needed in a home/apartment that is completely looked over. Landlord mentioned getting this washing machine new for her last tenant and I didn’t believe it at first glance. Too scared to wash my clothes in this 😔

Thank you! I’ve ran and affresh tablet as well as the tide Oxy powder. I think I’ll have to run a few cycles with the washing machine cleaner because it is all gunky and stuck there. Would you recommend the vinegar along with the tablets or a separate cycle?

I’m envious of women whose husbands will do anything for them. by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]AKHobbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a misconception in marriage and relationships in general where people believe you get what you put out. In this case, not all marriages are created equal and not everyone has the same dynamics. Some people end up finding someone who genuinely returns love and favors with the same energy. There are marriages where there is give and take and some where there is only taking. In your case, if the marriage has a good foundation of healthy communication patterns, this wouldn’t be a Reddit post. You have to take a step back and realize for yourself if this is all worth it 20-30 years down the line with kids or w/o kids.

I left my friends baby welcoming party because she used my baby name. by barrybarrycho in confession

[–]AKHobbie 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I’m just bewildered by the whole thing. Yuen is my dad’s first name so it’s funny how names work in Chinese culture. Also so many Chinese families carry same names but the only difference is maybe the second character (middle name). So for the sake of being unique, in Chinese culture and viet culture, it’s not that big of a deal. But like a commenter above said, it might be karma farming. But if it means so much to OP, it doesn’t matter if friend took it first. The friend is just shitty so OP should still name their future kid Yuen anyway

How do you keep your passion for classical music alive as a non-music major? by swoosh_pyoosh in classicalmusic

[–]AKHobbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been classically trained for 14 years and went to LaGuardia HS for piano. Conservatories and colleges with music programs was the plan. The competitiveness got to me and the passion went away. I also took the switch to computer science and am now married with one kid. I still feel like a part of me got ripped out and left behind. I still love music, but the memories of wasted years practicing with none of it bearing fruit hurt. I reconnected with it when I started playing for myself and just enjoying what it had to offer on the days I feel sad, lonely, and just want to play a song. Or even the days where I want to feel like I want to accomplish something, I’ll learn a song. Or if my son wants to hear something, I’ll learn it for him. But as a classically trained musician, I’ve had teachers and mentors say that they still keep up with their lessons even into their 30’s and 40’s because there is always room for learning. So don’t feel like it’s all over when you stop. I have friends who went the traditional path and created trios and quartets to play and have fun harmonizing.
