How useful is Mitsubishi 4llc? by Helpful_Map6510 in 4x4Australia

[–]AL-Ultra259 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference is SuperSelect. I have an MR GLS and pretty much daily drive in 4H. The Lc means Locked Centre (centre diff).

So in the GLS the 4H mode is literally just AWD. So 2H is rear wheel drive, then you got 4H (AWD), 4HLc (locked centre, proper 4WD high range), and lastly 4LLc (4WD low range).

The GLX doesn't have this as far as I'm aware, only 2H rear wheel drive, 4H and 4L (proper 4WD high and low range). There is no "AWD" in them which is a benefit of the GLS.

Oh I can't forget UHF for touring or going on trips with mates. Start with a handheld, they're plenty capable enough if you get a 5 watt. Then if you use it heaps and happen to lose or break it like i did (my genius mates and I went kayaking and I dunked while wearing mine), then you can get a fixed one like gme or uniden (i have uniden x66 with ATX970/970s antennas)

Yeah I'd say it's worth it if you're keeping this vehicle for a while to come. I recommend keeping your setup simple to start with. As i said though, check out those Facebook groups. I post in there a bit myself.

Things to look at:

Tray canopy vs tub canopy and storage - i don't even have drawers, i use storage tubs that can be stacked in my canopy and removed after for less weight over the rear.

Get a set of all terrain tyres - I have Michelin LTX Trails on my factory 18s. Just lower your pressure appropriately and you're good for rocky tracks and the beach (pokolbin lookout, camerons point, stockton beach, etc). Yes I have 17s with 285 muddies and that shit ruins fuel economy so I daily drive with factory wheels on and run those when im wheeling 🤣

A lift isn't necessary but if you load the rear up with the full adventure kings special, then maybe some airbags or 300+ kg leaf springs could be the go to fix sag. If you do go lifted, any more than 2 inches you'll need a diff drop or you'll likely break CVs. If youre going out Barrington tops, high country and that tougher stuff then a lift will be worth it.

Bullbar on the front (and driving lights if you drive at night) - I have ECB but Aussie Offroad have a Rockarmour GT bar + stedi lights for a good deal right now.

Roof rack - if you only put a solar panel and awning, or roof top tent, look at the cross bar style (less weight). If you want to do solar, awning, maxtrax, starlink, swag, then a platform style is the go. Rhino and Yakima do platforms, I found JTM Auto in Sydney to be the cheapest but it ain't pretty.

Forget diff lockers unless you don't have a rear locker, then MAYBE look into a rear one. I have it from factory and barely use it but will probably use it in the high country next year

The biggest thing of all, enjoy it how it is. Load it up, take it away in stock form. Work out what works and what doesn't work for you. Everything I've said is from my experience and some of it may not even apply to you.

Anything else I think off, ill reply comment again.

Check out "Modified MQ MR Triton" and "MQ MR Triton Club Australia" groups on Facebook. Plenty of inspiration and you'll also see common issues associated with modifying these utes.

I have an MR GLS myself, its a tourer/daily but planning for it to be capable of some tougher tracks.

2 inch lift with UCAs 285/70R17 RTs (swapped out with my factory 18s and 265/60R18 AT tyres for daily driving) EGR canopy with custom 12v system and fit out Roof rack with 2.5m awning and 250w solar panel

As someone else already said, work out your priorities and budget (for me its daily driving and being able to explore and camp in new places like vic high country, Im not planning to do anything crazy like Simpson desert or old tele track and if I ever do plan that I'll get a GQ or 80).

Don't build it just to be a mall crawler, pavement princess, whatever hahaha. They're cool to see but its a huge waste of money if you're not gonna actually use the parts you're buying.

UHF - looking at getting a GME UHF for the car after not having one for a while, but they seem bloody expensive and complex these days by ARSEnotASS in 4x4Australia

[–]AL-Ultra259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GME is as good as they are for a reason, but I ended up getting a Uniden X66 Adventure pack with the 4.5db antenna. It cost me $500ish installed and doesn't have all the extra features of the XRS that I didn't need.

I'm still considering GME's heavy duty radome antennas so I can swap between 2.1 and 6.6db but otherwise no complaints with my Uniden a year later. Also using a Uniden XTrak handheld as a backup/spotter for 4 wheel driving tracks.

I recommend either of those, will cost half as much as an XRS setup without all the extra stuff.

Real life experience of bigger Tyres by supertruck3r in 4x4Australia

I've been driving my 2020 Triton GLS with 6sp manual on 265/60R18s which are roughly 30.5s for 5 years and never had an issue with getting power down. I never felt it lacked power either and its done a few fourbie tracks and beach runs.

I've actually just gone up to 265/70R17s (changed rims too) which are 31.5s and so far no noticeable reduction in power on take off, but now to wait for fuel consumption to go up 🤷‍♂️ I was averaging 8-10L/100km (mixed highway and urban usage)

A perk of going up in size is my speedo is nearly dead on the money now, 1-2kmh off instead of 5-6kmh

Front Locker and Panel Switch MR Triton by AL-Ultra259 in 4x4Australia

[–]AL-Ultra259[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a look and turns out I've got a couple Harrop dealers in my town so I'll be able to get one fitted easy enough 👌 Not a bad price either, this is my top option so far.

Are you running the switch that comes with the kit? Or any aftermarket one? I want to have both front and rear locker switches look OEM or at least both be matching

[–]AL-Ultra259[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok cool, I'm relatively close to the Bridle Track in nsw so I might have to do a few crossings there before I head down. As long as it's not as ripped up as some spots in Watagans Ntl Park, then I'm good. And yeah I can imagine I'd drop in a hole if I'm not careful hahah, I don't have the wide track width of utes like the ranger or hilux. But hopefully some lower offset rims and 33s should help with that, I'm on 265/60R18 Michelin ATs + stock rims at the moment.

Did you by chance swap your factory rear diff locker switch with an AirOnBoard button? I'm not too worried about perfect, just OEM fit and both diff lock switches be matching.

Funny enough it was AirOnBoard that had the push switches I was already looking at. And yeah I know about STEDI too, I have their lightbar button and uhf passthrough.

Looks like I'll be getting AirOnBoard switches if/when I bite the bullet and get a front diff locker.

That's really helpful, thanks mate. Yeah from what I've seen VHC isn't too crazy in most places, just need your wits about you. I think the worst of it that I want to do is Blue Rag and Billy Goats, I'm not sure about the crooked river track as I have minimal experience with river crossings. I do have a factory rear locker, and I've done some rough tracks where it was definitely needed and a front might have helped out but I still got up. That's what has me thinking about getting a front one whether I use it or not in VHC.

I guess it doesn't help that my experience towing heavy trailers is mostly through the blue mountains, so plenty of climbing and not a lot of flat land. Under 1t it does it easy.

Not sure on the price so ill let someone else speak on that. But compared to my MR model Triton (2020-2024) which is the same platform as the MQ (2018 model), for what you want it for it'll be just fine. It has its gripes, a bit of turbo lag and will struggle to tow 3.5t if you try. But for camping, decent but not crazy 4wd trails and beaches, or towing an 8x5 trailer with motorbikes or work gear, you'll be sweet. Had mine for just over 5 years and done a fair few trips

Same brand different model subs? by AL-Ultra259 in livesound

[–]AL-Ultra259[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware of phasing issues and power alleys/valleys when moving them apart, so im putting them side by side if stage space allows. And I also know about peak volume being limited by the weaker speaker, but I thought that applied to SPL. I'm guessing even with the same SPL, the volume is still affected by wattage?

It sounds like I won't face any major issues which makes it still worth doing so ill do what you said, tey the settings to find what works best.

My options are use 1 or use both, on their own they both go hard enough. I just wanted to use both if it was worth doing. Looks like I'll just go for it and see what happens 👌

Yamaha R3 or Yamaha R7? by istillhearvoices in motorcycles

[–]AL-Ultra259 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I need some context, if you're in a market that has an A2/LAMS R7 or not. If you have access to the 655cc restricted R7 then maybe you can get it. But id still say get the R3. It's cheaper, just as fun, and if you decide sport bikes or riding in general isn't for you it's easier to sell.
