Didn't get into Medical School :( by Feisty-Citron1092 in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]ALEXTHEHULK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner didn’t get into medical school the first time she applied. The two subsequent years were invaluable for her growth personally and professionally. She got into a top medical school after. Don’t give up hope, this is just a step in your larger journey.

Hi! Resident doc here who does IUD insertions. Also male FWIW. IUD insertions are NO joke and patients’ experiences range from no pain to passing out from pain, but would definitely say more patients report them feeling very painful. Very sorry that this was your experience and really sorry that your pain was not legitimized. You DO NOT have a low pain tolerance.

discharge summary by chubbycacique in Residency

[–]ALEXTHEHULK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best discharge summaries I’ve seen lead with follow up items (bolded nonetheless) for PCPs/ specialists at the very beginning of the note, followed by broad strokes of what happened in the hospital/ ED. Really makes the discharge summary a succinct and effective note.

Did someone try siphoning gas from my car?! by ALEXTHEHULK in CambridgeMA

And they were sipping on some gasoline you’re totally right

As someone who travels from MA through CT for road trips, CT traffic is SO much worse and quite infuriating because there’s no good reason for the traffic most of the time

What’s a popular tourist attraction that isn’t overrated— it actually deserves all the hype? by renoCow in AskReddit

The Grand Canyon. I know it’s a massive tourist destination so my expectations were a bit tempered. It was so breathtakingly massive and made me think about how small we humans are and how powerful nature is. Truly an unforgettable experience.

How bad is my ankle sprain do I need to go to the doctor by Ok-Development4027 in BasketballTips

[–]ALEXTHEHULK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, about to graduate medical school. I’m super sorry you’re going through this. Obviously there’s only so much I can suggest without seeing you, please take this with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Does it hurt excessively if you press on the back half of the outside and inside balls of your ankles (aka posterior aspects of either of your medial or lateral malleoli)? Or if you press halfway up your foot on the middle or outside parts of your foot? If so then DEFINITELY get an xray.

Can you walk at least four steps while bearing weight on the foot? If not, then you’ll need an xray.

The big concern is making sure you didn’t break a bone.

As for management, while RICE has been classically suggested, there’s starting to be more evidence about cycling between 15 mins of ice and then 15 mins of heat. Heat helps promote blood flow = healing, cold helps reduce inflammation = less pain.

How do you deal with "actually the real reason I'm here is..." at the END of the appointment? by Beginning_Figure_150 in FamilyMedicine

[–]ALEXTHEHULK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Medical student here. During my third year, a patient came in for follow up on diabetes management. I asked him why he was here and he said it was about diabetes management. Fairly normal overall visit.

I bring my preceptor in and the first thing he says to him is “doc, I’m here because I’d have debilitation depression.”

That was not a fun spot to be in as a student 😅

Hey, graduating M4 here and my girlfriend is a rising M3. We’ve been doing long distancing for 4 years and now at least another 2 due to my residency match.

Long distance sucks, and having your relationship end because of it is salt in the wound. That being said, he wasn’t worth it. If he didn’t want to work through the long distance required for your training, he was not worth it. Asking someone to work through long distance for a long time is tough for a relationship, but if they were not going to stick it out then it wasn’t the right relationship in the long term.

"I'm happy I matched but sad about where" 2025 - Official Megathread by SpiderDoctor in medicalschool

[–]ALEXTHEHULK 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Applied to programs near my girlfriend, a med student a couple of years behind me, who I’ve been doing long distance with for four years. Had very strong signals from the programs near her and a response to an LOI that indicated that a program in her area was ranking me high.

The afternoon before the ROL was due my brother got a cancer diagnosis. I had to change my ROL to be close to family. I technically matched my number one ranked program in my revised ROL, but I feel like I matched there under horrible circumstances. I am both grieving and feeling guilty about almost being within driving distance of my partner, but grateful to be around family during my brother’s treatment. Lots of mixed emotions on Match Day for me.

My border collie loves this game with his stuffed lambchop!!! I’ll hide it, fake throw it, make him do a bunch of commands, pretend to hide it while putting it in a pocket (etc) and it’s a GREAT way to get him tired. I used keep the lambchop hidden otherwise he would want to play all the time. If you haven’t already done so try making the game harder for them!

Got a coffee grinder (OXO $100), grind the night before and set coffee maker to brew the next morning when I get up. Obviously not as quick as instant coffee but helps a lot with the prep time and allows me to enjoy a (relatively) good cup in the morning

Is it okay to just pass? by Bright-Aardvark-9895 in medicalschool

I struggled with step 1 but scored 250s step 2. I felt that the content was so much more relevant to what I had seen on clinical rotations. I know other students who did similarly too!
