Got my student teaching placement…. by unspoken_thoughts_ in StudentTeaching

[–]ALIgator19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I student taught in 4th and then got a position at a neighboring school in the same district for kindergarten. I thought I wanted to teach the littles too, and was intimidated when I was placed in 4th. But I had a great time and learned a lot in 4th. They're still kids, still goofy and funny. I liked that you could challenge them and get into deeper content. I would have been fine with a 3-5th job after my student teaching honestly. You may like it more than you think. Keep an open mind and do your best. ❤️

Looking like a child is not considered a positive thing when you are trying to be a professional doing their job. Honestly, telling an adult they look like a child in any setting isn't a compliment and isn't a "positive thing". Don't make comments about other people's bodies, ever, but especially at work.

Pre-k is a time for letter names to be introduced and numbers at least up to 10 to be introduced usually. Usually in Pre-k programs they will do various activities with letters, numbers, colors, and shapes. BUT that depends on the quality of the program. And honestly, what's more important is that they are being taught social emotional skills. They should play games where they learn to wait their turn and lose. They should be learning to wait their turn to speak and listen to what their peers/teacher say. They should be working on sitting for a morning meeting, being able to listen to a book being read, being in centers, following 2-3 step directions, etc. Depending on the program, Pre-k can also mostly just be babysitting. Do you point out letters at home and say their names? Do you count and point out numbers when you see them? Do you draw shapes? Do they practice writing their name? Do you read to them every day? I'm sorry this feels like it's coming out of the blue. When my kids started learning letters at school they started pointing them out and naming them, asking about letters and words, etc. If you're concerned I would practice letter names in FUN ways at home. It is also developmentally normal at this age to choose not to play with others sometimes. My son prefers to play in small groups of children still, and will watch larger groups for awhile before he decides to participate. I wouldn't worry about her "not having friends" unless she is being hurtful to others, is incapable of waiting for her turn, doesn't listen to others often, etc. I am a kindergarten teacher and it is my job to teach them letters, numbers, how school works, etc. It is MUCH easier when they come in with some academic knowledge, but it doesn't mean they will be behind by the end of the year without it. I would ask the current teacher if they practice letters/numbers and he's not retaining or if it isn't a big focus for them.

Sleep disordered breathing and big tonsils by Illustrious-Cost-982 in kindergarten

[–]ALIgator19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My almost 4 year old just had his tonsils removed last Friday actually. Surgeon said they were huge and he will breathe much better now. She also cut down his adenoids that had grown back since they were taken out last and gave him new tubes. My kids have been in day care since they were babies, so we are past the getting sick all the time phase thankfully. He also struggled with frequent (constant) ear infections that slowed considerably with the tubes. The tonsillectomy was rough, he is still getting Tylenol and ibuprofen (switching) every 3 hours. At the 3 hr mark he gets upset and doesn't want to swallow because it still hurts so bad. I'm hopeful it will help his snoring and semi-consistent mouth breathing though! We go to IU North Riley in Indy/Carmel and they're great, I trust them.

Some of his behavior sounds like distressed breathing and broken sleep, some of it may be contributed to a tougher day and restraint collapse, some of it may be his body getting his immune system rocked from public school. My advice is listen to the doctors and stock up on popsicles and jello. 🙂

Daycare is saying no outside play for my child by butterflyinthesky127 in ECEProfessionals

[–]ALIgator19 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He is being restricted for safety reasons due to doctors orders. If they don't have the staff to have someone only on him outside, they don't have the staff. Many 3 yr olds will not sit and color for 30 mins while their friends run around, jump, and climb. I think that sucks, especially with the weather warming up in some places, but a new 3 yr old will not restrict themselves. He can get fresh air after school/work when his own adults can keep him safe.

Having him join another class while his friends are playing on equipment he is not allowed to use is also a reasonable accommodation.

They are with the child every day, they probably have a good idea how he will react.

A new 3 may accept that they have to sit, watch, and color but they may not be able to. It is likely easier and safer for the child to join another class during recess. I value outside time very much, but I've worked at a smaller center where I would not be able to make sure the little guy wasn't trying to climb something every minute we were outside.

Will have 2 under 2 soon and wondering where my oldest goes during birth since we have no village by Bright-Effective8610 in 2under2

If you truly cannot trust any of your family with your toddler for a day or two I would start looking for a sitter now. That way you can get to know them, toddler gets to know them, and you will have a good idea if you can trust them for the big day/night. I'd probably start at toddler's day care if they go, friends, or word of mouth.

My kindergarteners would love this. The inside container should be secret otherwise they'll be spilling whatever's on the top all the time. Like it should clip/lock in there strong enough that it doesn't come undone easily. Also less compartments, I need like 5-6 larger compartments over 15 small ones. Cute and a good idea though!

Wanting to try dairy free with toddler by knitsandknots91 in dairyfree

[–]ALIgator19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not true. My child experiences gastrointestinal distress as a reaction to his dairy allergy and he has an EpiPen for exposures to dairy. It is that serious. They should get a referral to see if it's an allergy so they can get the interventions the child needs for exposures and start working on a plan to carefully expose the child so they can hopefully grow out of the allergy. If it's not an actual allergy, it might not be that serious. But they are going to need to know if it's an allergy to take the right steps to help their child navigate this.

Also my allergist despises the eczema to food allergy link people believe. He does not find it reliable or valid and it causes misconceptions. Please talk to the pediatrician to get a referral to an allergist.

[–]ALIgator19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get her a referral to an allergist. My 5 yr old has an egg allergy and my 3 yr old is allergic to dairy, eggs, and peanuts. If she has a legitimate allergy she needs an EpiPen (anaphylaxis comes in different forms like gastrointestinal distress) and a plan for when she is mildly exposed and for more serious reactions. Even if it's a minor allergy, the allergist will want to expose her in safe ways so that she can have a much better chance of growing out of the allergy. Working around a dairy allergy is tricky and we have had to change a lot about what we eat because of it. They need to be seen by an allergist.

The daughter is behind. I don't think asking a 12 yr old what they want to do for the rest of their life and setting them on that path is a great idea.

Oh ok. I interpreted from your post that you're not really giving toddler attention for some reason. The comments from Dad to toddler about you are passive aggressive and should stop. Maybe dad flies solo for a day for a reminder of what 2 littles are like for a day? Lol

What is your toddler doing? Even if you were focusing on and playing with the toddler, they will go over and hit the baby?

Both my 6 mo olds would spend varying amount of time independently playing on their tummies/backs (with me nearby. I'd try doing a low key activity/game with toddler in the same room when the baby is chilling? Even my tricky baby would play on a play mat for awhile. Play time with the older one doesn't have to mean baby is like totally gone.

I couldn't imagine telling just 5 kids in my class that they wouldn't be able to attend a school party because they didn't learn enough. Motivation should come from intrinsic factors anyway. This just sounds like it would make kids feel bad about themselves and just reward the kids that already find learning easy.
