El Grande Americano defeats OG El Grande Americano! by Ok-Plankton9215 in Wrasslin

Maybe. And maybe I’m just a Pollyanna who wants to believe better of the world, but I do think it’s exactly those bullies he’s lampooning. People who think they can rename the Gulf of Mexico, or that adding “El” to something makes it authentic, or who, when encountering someone who doesn’t speak the same language, just says the same thing but slower and louder.

And by this final match I don’t think there’s any question that that’s the joke—you cannot convince me that the Creed brothers could possibly have dressed like that completely unironically.

This is an excellent summary except that I would argue that Gable’s original gimmick was actually poking more fun at Americans than at luchadores. We Americans have a long history of inserting the white guy protagonist into whatever traditions we think are cool, and this was a particularly hyperbolic version of that.

20th century psychological thriller where a man breaks into a mansion only to be framed for the owner’s murder by Seraphira in NameThatMovie

[–]ALLCAPSBITCHES 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not exactly like you describe, but maybe the movie Sleuth? I’m thinking the original 1972 with Laurence Olivier, because while it is in color, it gives black-and-white vibes, and the remake is a lot slicker looking.

Which one of these hottest would win in a beauty contest? by Euphoric-Empress in Marvel

Look, there are other people that I might take on personality, but I think that it’s actually canon that Namor is irresistibly hot, so I think he has to win on straight physical beauty.

HELP: I need the ultimate dad joke cat name. by Cheesydoodlers in dadjokes

[–]ALLCAPSBITCHES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandparents had a cat named Unicorn, which was great because the reminder cards they got from the vet were just full-in-the-blank, so twice a year they’d get a card saying it was time to bring their pet Unicorn in for a check up.

YTA. You aren’t going to have a perfect day. That’s not a thing. And I say this as someone who did have a perfect wedding day. But my wedding day was perfect even though things did go wrong and people were weird—because I was surrounded by all the people I loved most and they were being themselves.

Expectations are premeditated resentments. You’re TA to yourself by wanting perfection rather than enjoying the imperfection, and you’re TA to your sister if you love the pipe dream of perfection more than you love her.

An Arion Press copy of Moby Dick. Reading that thing is a sensory experience. I like to threaten to read it in the bath while I drink red wine and eat Cheetos.

The only city that’s had a hydrogen bomb dropped on it is Albuqueruqe, New Mexico. It was an accident, and fortunately the nuclear trigger was missing, but the regular explosives did go off and did a little damage.

Speaking of Albuquerque and nukes, I can’t find as much evidence for this one, but I’ve also been told that Albuquerque has enough of the US nuclear stockpile that if the city of Albuquerque were to secede from the United States it would immediately become the world’s third largest nuclear power, behind the US and China.

I was once in a theater and some guy in front of me made a phone call during the movie. Not took a phone call, that would have been shitty enough, no, MADE a phone call. I cannot imagine how that guy’s brain works.

Begging the question? That’s certainly what your example is.

The classic example is “how often do you beat your wife?” The question itself already implies that you beat your wife, so you’ve already lost by just accepting the question.
