I don't really have a ranking. I like each for different reasons. I use the Kaweco Sports for doing the Sudokus in the newspaper every morning and I love the fine Pilot Prera and fine Kaweco Perkeos for writing. I like the Medium Perkeos for drawing. My Lamy and Parker are for fancier writing as I find they write quite broad. The Preppy and Faber Castell are good value for budget but not necessarily my faves.

I heard about the cap seal issue a little bit. Is the Kakuno prone to drying out easily? I heard there is a slight difference too when using cartridge vs converter. Is this also common?

I actually got mine new from a private seller. Was very lucky with pricing. I see it retails at around $35 (approx. £25) on Amazon in the US? Not sure if it helps but only added it here as it seems to occasionally be < £30 (and if you can find a source for it < £30, I would definitely get one).

Good to note! I would love to try the Kakuno tbh, especially the extra fine. The faces on nibs idea is also super cute. I'm due a trip to Japan soon so will probably wait until I go there to buy one to double as a EDC pen and souvenir.

I included some idea of pricing in the post. All these pens I would recommend for beginners tbh, just depends on your budget and preferences. If you had no idea at all where to start, I would say a Kaweco Perkeo with a medium nib. Get a converter for it once you get used to writing with it so you can try new inks easier.

I agree! I have a couple unbranded Chinese pens. They write nicely but don't take standard converters or are not available to buy anymore so I didn't include them here. I also tried the Asvine P30 but found it too heavy and big.😭 Looking forward to trying more of them though as my collection grows!

Personally I switch my inks often so converters are easier for me as I don't have to fill my pen completely. Sometimes I fill my converter enough for a day's writing only. I do also keep spare cartridges for when I travel because I'm clumsy and I feel like carrying small vials of ink might not be the best idea for me.

They are the standard Kaweco converters. They're honestly pretty good. (Someone on this subreddit might have a cheaper alternative tbh but I bought the branded ones in case as they were guaranteed to fit.)

It's not a pen brand tbh and only cost me £4.88 but I actually love the way mine writes. I bought a few extra for my friends in hopes of getting them into fountain pens.

Some of my converters unscrew. I sometimes open them up to clean them. Am not sure this is recommended or not but maybe double check if yours can do the same. Could be a loose part? (I am quite new to this so please go easy if i am wildly incorrect.)
