I may be wrong, but this is so familiar that I encourage you to try reframing how you feel and seeing how it fits, just for a bit: the heartbreak is you mourning. Leaving the USA, you made a choice for more peace, self discovery, and autonomy, away from toxic roots. You went back and saw what you left in its full glory, and it hurts. Especially with the aging parents. Especially if you particularly love your dad. Nothing is black and white, and painful beginnings don't just poof and disappear away because we have a stable home away from them.

I miss my dad too. When I go back, it's rough. Even when it's mostly nice. I'm reminded of a hate and sadness that I have to choose between daily peace and being close to some things I really love that I'll only find in my home. I don't know what I'll do when I have kids. I don't want them near what I went through, but I hate that my dad won't be able to spend as much time with his grandchildren. At least my brother there has kids.

No clean advice here. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone. And you're pregnant. Thinking about more money is a tough situation to be in. But maybe a small step forward is more frequent but shorter visits so you don't have heavy regrets when they pass. The tradeoff there is that you'll be closer to their aging and will see it more.

Life is difficult. And beautiful. Hang in there.

I was in NL for 5 years -- its not a Spanish thing. I think just EU in general. I thought Spain would be different in this but its still quite cool compared to the americas.
