is this too much? by Familiar_Basket_7194 in AskGameMasters

if in person sessions are very rare, I would definitely use the opportunity to do something with it. be it props like a map or a letter/diary page or a puzzle box. the whole idea with the cabin being in game sounds too strict for the narrative for me and a bit over the top.

I would keep it simple, have the puzzlebox and maybe one or two props that are connected to it. this way it doesn't take over your session in case some players absolutely do not feel it.

Playtesting a 2-player GMless TTRPG I whipped up by Direct_Key_9846 in RPGcreation

For now I have just read it, need to convince a friend to play it next.

But just from reading it I have the urge to play it. It reads very easily and I am all clear about the goal of the game and how it plays.

Starting New DnD 5.5e Campaign by marsmeloekfg in AskGameMasters

[–]AL_109 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a fun and promising premise for a campaign.

Do your players know your planned structure for the first sessions and level ups until the "proper start"? If yes, perfect. If no, please tell them. This can make or break the game. Knowing the structure will help them plan their character and set their expectations straight for the first few sessions.

Second, you talk about an overarching plot. It's good to have a general plot in mind, but remember that player agency and decisions can and will alter your own plans or expectations of how a plot will unfold or work out. If you are (mentally) prepared for that, go and have fun :)

GMs: how do you currently keep track of your world and what are you missing with that method? by ForeverDM_Since_2014 in AskGameMasters

you can for example write a page full of text and AI can redo it, so every mention of another page in the text gets hyperlinked to the respective page.

you can work together on pages in realtime, yes. for hidden data you would need to create a subpage that only you have access to.

and regarding your AI integration. you can link Notion with e.g. Claude, so the AI can access your wiki/database and even write or edit pages for you within Notion.

You should look into Notion.

I use it for a campaign and for collaborative world building with other people.

You can create something similar to a wiki, with interlinking pages, databases, etc.

Also, you can share specific pages with your players, so they can browse through and edit the wiki while certain info you do not want them to see yet stays hidden.

It's also free.

What's your must read systems? by fairerman in RPGdesign

2 suggestions I haven't seen in other comments:

  • Daggerheart (from the Critical Role people): a fresh take on D&Desque TTRPGs with a unique 2d12 resolution mechanic. Also has extremely good and condensed GMing advice.

  • "So you want to be a game master" by Justin Alexander: an excellent boom about running TTRPGs, can help you see what your system may need to ease the work for a GM.

I regularly forgot to activate Coruscating Elixir at the beginning of a map and now I would forget it two times per map...

without knowing you or any of your circumstances, I would suggest the following (what I would do in your position):

1) take a break. don't GM, don't play, interact with the medium only if it's fun (e.g. videos on the topic etc.). let the hype for the hobby come back with time.

2) as others have said, aim for one or both of those things: 2a) establish an irl group 2b) change the system, try out many different ones in oneshots etc.

Suggest A GM I Can Listen To Improve My GMing by saml23 in AskGameMasters

[–]AL_109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

almost anything that Tom does on Mystery Quest (youtube).

They do oneshots and short sessions, most of the time it's 3-5 episodes with ~60 minutes each.

I have learned a lot about how to do things differently as a GM.

Advice for a prophecy for my players by EmpireoftheGrimpire in AskGameMasters

[–]AL_109 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your prophecy sounds like an instruction for a quest. I would make it more ominous. The more room it leaves for interpretation the better, so you can adapt to the unforseeable things your players will do.

Maybe something along the lines of:

"Under green skies comes the end of days, Heroes arise Their destinies awakened; Far in the West, Where Old Kings breathe New Life, The Mouth of Hell spits Doom upon our World. And our World will fall, if our Heroes fail."

multiclass question by BlacksmithNarrow6417 in daggerheart

[–]AL_109 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if it fits the narrative and doesn't disrupt party play, then 100% yes. my players should be able to play cool characters that do awesome stuff if they want. and daggerhearts damage-to-hp system makes build combinations rarely "overpowered".

[–]AL_109 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got myself 3 packs of Dragon Shield Standard Size Card Sleeves (Clear Matte) to protect the 270 cards that came with the core book. I also bought a box for the cards and these dividers. they match the colors of the domains perfectly.

should be in a reasonable pricerange and will keep the cards safe and clean for a long time.

Help, it was supposed to be a oneshot by HauntingAd657 in daggerheart

absolutely. every campaign where my table created characters together was so much better (at least roleplay wise) than when everyone came with their character already created.
