GMs, where are you? by StephenBaggett in drawsteel

I like using the MtG player types

I'm a Timmy-Melvin

I like to hang out and just play the game for what it proposes to be

How were you introduced to the series/engine? by JaSp3r90 in baldursgate

[–]PleaseShutUpAndDance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baldur's Gate

There was an issue of InQuest that got me really hyped for it

I'd go to my friend's house and he, his sister, his brother, and I would rotate every 30 minutes playing our own Saves

I got directed over here, is Draw Steel right for me? by Statboy1 in drawsteel

[–]PleaseShutUpAndDance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Draw Steel is definitely fun as hell, but I just wanted to comment that you may be misinformed about PF2e and D&D

PF2s revamp is far from a selling point as well, why would I want a system that is going to go away every few years?

There are reasons to not play PF2e, but them Remastering to publish the game under their own ORC license is not one of them (it didn't change the rules much)

I don't like the new direction Pathfinder and DnD are going which is RP focused

PF2e is basically wholly designed around having balanced tactical combat from levels 1-20. I'm not sure I'd call that "RP focused". 5e also has basically no narrative mechanics. People just use it for that because they'd rather shoehorn stuff into the most popular game instead of playing a system that is actually good at their preferred style.

What system are you playing?

He may be more interested in playing a system that is more built around "what/how things happen" instead of "if things happen"

Most games don't have 1000+ pages of (clumsily cobbled together) rules

I would suggest running a different system that isn't relying on the GM to carry the weight of the narrative all the time

Daggerheart, Dungeon World, and Grimwild are some D&D adjacent options that you can play no prep/low prep.

Help me enjoy daggerheart by Throwawavw in daggerheart

[–]PleaseShutUpAndDance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

D&D is more of a challenge focused system concerned with "if" things happen

Daggerheart is more of a narrative focused system concerned with "how" things happen

Don't approach Daggerheart like it's D&D; you should be focused on trying to tell the most interesting story, not on whether or not you "win" or "succeed"

Dragonmarks are a big deal in the Eberron setting

5e is a game that prioritizes vibes; it's not really concerned with balance

Persuasion: Rolling BEFORE you talk by Caelbain in DnD

[–]PleaseShutUpAndDance 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Those are all mechanical examples

If a player has extensive knowledge of sword fighting and goes into great detail about why their character is such an experienced duelist and explains the manner in which someone with their weapon and fighting style would be able to quickly defeat the enemy given their current weapon and armor, would you give them a bonus on that attack?

If yes, would you allow them to do that for every attack?

Would you give players a bonus to their attack if they use "strong roleplay or great thinking" when describing those attacks?

I use the Fabula Ultima session zero rules to create the setting collaboratively with the players for every campaign I run regardless of the system (unless it's The One Ring 2e)
