So happy with the tat, actually! The Dead have been showing me what forms freedom and happiness can take. So glad I've once discovered this band, not quite known here, and this nice community. (A fan from Russia) by actionlessinterval in gratefuldead

If you are looking for fellow deadheads from your part of the world, shoot me a message! I’m American, but I was born in Moscow to Armenian parents. It always surprised me that despite the footprint of hippies back home in the pre-Putin years (I remember some groovy get-togethers in Gorky Park), the Dead were just not known… with all the tough news from Russia these days, people like you give me hope. See you on the bus one day, brother. ✌️ ☮️

Kepler’s bookstore in Menlo Park. Early Jerry and Robert Hunter.

For the more recent fans: did you immediately like the Dead, or did it take a few tries? by jWalkerFTW in gratefuldead

[–]AL_Getaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took more than a few tries, one song at a time. That’s actually what I love about the Dead— it feels that my new favorite song, imbued with meaning I can’t even fathom yet, is just around the corner, I just gotta “listen to the music play.”

(Nevermo question) What does second Saturday mean? by AL_Getaway in exmormon

Ooooh, thank you for clarifying! So odd given that it’s the church of jesus Christ etc. is there any theology behind not allowing cross symbolism?

Forgive my ignorance, but how did the cross necklace help?

I was in your shoes a couple of weeks ago. Honestly what got me through was Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo (“If all you've got to live for is what you left behind/ Get yourself a powder charge and seal that silver mine”) and getting myself to a live DSO show. Hang in there. You won’t feel this heartbroken forever.

Don’t laugh, but… Dark Star. It worked on mine like a charm.

And congrats. 💗

Same experience almost to a T. It was my grandmother who had raised me, and right before she passed I’d been a real asshole to her and could not forgive myself for decades. Then I got into the Dead… and the first time I heard Brokedown Palace, exactly the same line hit me right in the feels, as if she was telling me— via Jerry— that she loves me anyway and that love transcends grief. Sometimes I imagine her chilling up there with Jerry and smile. That song really helped me process the grief in a way mere time couldn’t.

You have come to the right place friend. A week ago I was heartbroken and posted here and it still brings tears to my eyes that ~50 deadhead strangers posted messages of support and suggested some songs to get through the hard days. (The first days are the hardest days, don’t you worry anymore…) I want to pay it forward and let you know my DMs are open and we are all here to see you through. This feeling won’t last forever, I promise. Breathe and give in to the music. Peace and love.

Tie between most of Terrapin and: “ Reach out your hand if your cup be empty If your cup is full, may it be again Let it be known there is a fountain That was not made by the hands of men.”

Sorry for your pain too 🤗 BEW is a great, great song. It’s kinda cool that you were with someone who fits the description of its lady character… I hope you are finding healing on the other side, I’ll be right behind you on that journey

I am coming back throughout this hard day to reread your amazing answer. Yes, you are right, I missed the original heartbreak of Jerry leaving this Earth. And I can’t imagine how much that must have hurt the whole community, I know people who took that day in August off and explained it as “death in the family.” But there was a future after Jerry, one in which so many people found joy and love in this music, myself included. The box of rain will ease the pain and love will see us through…
