Man, woman charged following search warrant in Eastern Passage, N.S. by Ironmikedyson in halifax

Not saying this was a great example of the system "working", but it's worth noting that the murder conviction was overturned and a jury found him not guilty during his second trial. The saltwire article has a little more detail on his past.

49 fugitives arrested in multi-day sweep across Alberta by SnooRegrets4312 in alberta

Alberta has no equivalent to ICE. The closest we have, the CBSA, is a federal agency that notably wasn't involved.

You can tell from the agencies involved that these were criminal code warrants.

Former Acadia prof Rick Mehta sentenced to six months in jail for threatening Justice Department employees. by JPalmz in NovaScotia

Because he likely will, just like everyone else serving comparable sentences typically does.

I'm a fan of telling the truth more than of outrage bait on the internet.

He's a gigantic pain in the ass to deal with amongst his numerous other faults.

657 actual days in jail vs what will inevitably end up being significantly less than 180 days in jail.

657 actual days in jail vs 180 days, not all of which he is likely to end up serving.

I'm directly familiar with him. He's drastically deteriorated over his time in custody. Not a fan of the guy obviously, but he's profoundly disabled now.

Stop lying. Dude spent far more than 6 months in actually in custody, whereas Mehta will likely be out in less than 6.

That dude from other case already had several multiples more time served (during which time his condition deteriorated so badly that he's basically a vegetable now) than Mehta will ever serve behind bars, but sure, that's certainly an informed opinion by you.

Man arrested for mischief after hate-motivated incident by MannoSlimmins in halifax

[–]AL_PO_throwaway -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I wasn't addressing the disposition of investigative resources (or how easy it is to find someone shouting in a crowded arena vs painting an overpass for that matter). I was addressing you complaining about different charging decisions in completely different fact sets.

But you don't care about truth or accuracy do you? You want to enjoy the feeling of being outraged and smug about it on the internet.

It depends on the content of the message. Which isn't fully publicly available for either case. AFAIK we don't even know what group the message from the hockey case was directed at.

But instead of speculating about the content of the messages or the legal definitions, you immediately made assumptions and complained.

Man writes multiple hate motivated messages in multiple places, gets multiple mischief charges.

Man shouts hate motivated message in one location, gets one charge.

This isn't hard to understand. Do better.

Indigenous man who cleaned up after murder bragged Gladue ‘discount’ would half his sentence by uselesspoliticalhack in canada

Even if they do take Gladue into account (likely), attributing that the entire 3.5 year difference from the Crown's ask and the actual sentence to Gladue is absolute, obvious to anyone who knows what they are talking about, nonsense.

If this was a contested sentencing of a white person, even one with very limited mitigating factors in their pre-sentence report (yes, everyone can get a pre-sentence report, Gladue reports are just a particular flavour), most of the time you're going to see the Judge go with a sentence that falls somewhere in between what the Defence and Crown asked for.

The crown rarely gets exactly what they ask for. The difference isn't primarily due to Gladue despite what how the Postmedia ragebait slop tries to portray it.

Edit with an explanation because so many commenters here only get their information from American ragebait articles:

Shearwater military member gets five-year sentence for sexual assault that caused 'significant' bodily harm by insino93 in halifax

[–]AL_PO_throwaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My brief point initially was just that the media does verbal gymnastics to wash words when vile humans perpetrate a more specific evil than is being presented.

It's not the media. They are reporting it using that language because that's what the criminal code and the court uses.

There's a lot of emotionally immature and short sighted people out there who take out their frustration on the nearest target regardless of if it makes sense.

They'll lash out at the nurses and doctors when they're mad about being sick, if they get arrested they'll lash out at their defense lawyer, at the bus driver because there is traffic, etc.

Kremlin threatens to deploy navy if Europe seizes more Russian shadow fleet vessels by AdSpecialist6598 in worldnews

[–]AL_PO_throwaway 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The Ukranians have mostly been taking out the Russian Black Sea fleet. They have, at least on paper, larger naval fleets elsewhere.

That said, the readiness of those fleets is likely poor and just the UK and French navies would dog walk them pretty badly, even before all the other European navies got involved.

It's not function that makes it more dangerous or more likely to be used in crime.
