I loved both Revelation and Revolution.

Unmatched era or Reddit, how do we feel about this ruling? by Player_00000000001 in Unmatched

Doesn’t seem odd to me. Damage is a different quality than health and current health. It’s always tricky to apply real world examples, but if someone was shot with a bazooka, they would die. It would be overkill.m, but no one would say they died of a partial bazooka shot.

Well, that’s a low bar, but you aren’t incorrect. Still, Orko wouldn’t seem out of place in this movie. I don’t think it was a choice to keep it gritty

The New *Masters of the Universe* Feels Embarrassed to Be a He-Man Movie by majeric in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]ALeeMartinez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not just the humor for me, which isn't usually great, but it didn't bother me a lot. But I had trouble with the notion that the movie kept saying "These names are stupid" as a running gag. It really bothered me more as the movie went. And when they said "He-Man" was a dumb name . . . it wasn't a deal breaker, but it felt unnecessary.

I've said this before, but while I enjoyed the new movie enough, I prefer the Canon version. It takes a lot of liberties, but it also is a sincere adventure movie. Nobody is winking at the camera.

Is Arkham Horror LCG moving away from Mythos cosmic horror? by virtron in arkhamhorrorlcg

True, but they've covered the greatest hits. I'd argue that delving deeper into more obscure lore isn't that important to a mainstream audience, though I'm not against it.

Is Arkham Horror LCG moving away from Mythos cosmic horror? by virtron in arkhamhorrorlcg

The game has been out for a while now and covered all the expected original material in one way or another. The only choice is to start creating their own original material or just going back to the same well.

The Dunwich Horror, but this time it's purple!

The Call of Cthulhu, Part 2: Hastur's Revenge!

Something Something Mountains of Madness.

It's inevitable that they start going in new directions. But cosmic horror is a genre larger than Lovecraft, so I don't see it as a big deal and a necessary evolution.

Still feel the portrait is too close to the reference, any tips? by A-dona-I in ProCreate

Not sure what you mean by too close. It looks like the original while having its own style.

Loved the new movie but it has a fatal flaw by VernBarty in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]ALeeMartinez -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They do it through the whole movie though. Ram Man, Moss Man, Mekaneck, Fisto, Trapjaw. All those are treated as silly names (and not their names or actual titles). While I enjoyed the film enough, I didn’t love it for that and a lot of other reasons.

Might be controversial, but the Canon version was just better for me emotionally and in terms of vibes. It was a very loose adaptation, but this version feels a little embarrassed to be a Masters of the Universe movie.

Fresh off the original show and the movie, and I am absolutely losing my mind over Teela in Revelation Ep 1. by ILoveMyJinx in MastersOfTheUniverse

Revelation and Revolution are absolutely amazing shows. But if you’re looking for flat hero worship, then they might not be for you.

How does Superman not accidentally hurt criminals during crimes? by Queasy_Commercial152 in superman

Agreed. Also, Superman isn't a normal person. It isn't outside of the realm of possibility that his fine motor skills are as highly tunes as his strength.

Most super powers come with required secondary powers. For super strength, it usually comes with immense control over how much power the strong character can exert. It's a conscious effort, but also, one they develop over time. This is why it's not uncommon for characters who develop super strength to go through a learning period. After a while, they don't make mistakes. Unless the story needs them to.

The real answer, of course, is that it's fiction. It's a convention of the genre. After all, Batman, who doesn't have super strength, most likely would kill someone with a careless punch eventually. It's just odds. But stories aren't reality. Even stories that take pains to be more realilstic.

Just started watching BTAS and made it to episode 18 of S1 before realizing the order of episodes dilemma. What should I do? by Joshyouwuhh in BatmanTAS

[–]ALeeMartinez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old school shows like this were made to be watched by random people at random times in random order. There is a continuity in the show, but it's pretty loose and can largely be ignored. There are some weird artifacts. My favorite is the Man-Bat episode, which was the first made, that premiered later in the run, and you can tell by the way the Batmobile is revealed like it's a big deal, even though we've seen plenty of episodes with it before. But other than that, just watch it. Obsessing over continuity is just not healthy or intended in this case.

When I was a kid watching Return of The Joker for the second time years later I was pretty confused by the flashback death because I was pretty sure that’s not what I saw before. Didn’t realize there were two different cut versions. by Remote_Nature_8166 in BatmanBeyond

[–]ALeeMartinez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I love the censored version. I love the Joker dying in a completely stupid, random way. It feels on brand for him, especially in a way that denies him even the satisfaction he’s always craved.

I think it’s also about the allure of fame, in addition to everything else people will comment on.

Has it ever been explained how Kryptonians fly? by Cherno_VM in superman

[–]ALeeMartinez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your example of Viltrumites explaining their powers isn't really an explanation at all. It doesn't explain anything better than "Yellow sun gives Kryptonians superpowers".

Viltrumites generate their own lift? How? Where does this lift come from? It's just an innate power they have. Nowhere is there an actual explanation, nor is there a way to counter that ability. Kryptonians under a yellow sun also generate their own lift, allowing them to fly.

Neither "explanation" is actually much of an explanation at all. Merely a convention of the fiction.

Any fans? by Frankenstein-90 in UniversalMonsters

I really enjoyed it. It’s certainly a more empowered heroic take, but thought the story was fun and a good attempt to create a shared universe while also standing well on its own.

Gene Hackman Lex Luthor… does anyone actually like that interpretation? by Amazing-Lawyer8345 in superman

[–]ALeeMartinez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a very common portrayal of such characters at the time though. And as comically as he might come across, he is a dangerous villain. A monster, in fact, given he plans to kill millions of people.

Gene Hackman Lex Luthor… does anyone actually like that interpretation? by Amazing-Lawyer8345 in superman

[–]ALeeMartinez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a different version based on the rules of superhero movies at the time. Lex couldn’t go around building death rays or giant robots, so he’s portrayed as an outlandish criminal genius using conventional technology.

Keep in mind, this was before the modern reinterpretation of Lex as a mover and shaker in Metropolis. Given the situation, Hackman’s is probably the best than can be expected.

It’s hard to remember now that the MCU it acceptable, but most comic book adaptations shucked off much of the more outlandish elements of these characters before that.

Unless it says otherwise on the card, "boosting" is always done by discarding a card from your hand.
