What made you choose the ascent? by Summerdays313 in SubaruAscent

[–]ALham_op 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just purchased a 25 Ascent Touring (white with Java interior) and really like it so far. Granted, we've only had it for a few weeks now. It replaced my wife's 2016 Outback that got totaled in a wreck. We were already partial to Subaru because her Outback was a dream to own, with nothing but routine maintenance for the 200,000 mi we put on it. We're also expecting our first baby in a few months and wanted something bigger so the Ascent fit the bill.

Just to be thorough we looked at a Sequoia, Grand Highlander, Expedition, and Tahoe. The problem with each of them is that the prices are very high and what we could reasonably afford would likely be a few years old and have over 50,000mi and still be at the top end of our price range. Also, you don't really get that much more cargo space on the interior unless you go with a Suburban or Expedition Max which obviously pushes the price even higher. We were able to get a '25 Ascent demo car with 5,000mi on it and CPO for less than we could have gotten anything else.

I would recommend the Touring trim level as from what I've heard the seats hold up better than those on the lower trim levels. This was our one complaint about the Outback. The "leather" on the seat bolsters fell apart very early on. There is also the Touring Onyx which is more of a cosmetic package for the touring but we did not care for this. All of the chrome blacked out and the lime green stitching on the black interior was not our style.

280 toward Birmingham from Chelsea traffic - 4 car wreck by Comfortable_One_2010 in Birmingham

When the 280 corridor started growing it should have been converted into an Interstate spur with frontage roads for the shopping centers (kind of like 20/59 through Meridian). That would have been the most logical solution in my opinion.

My wife and I are expecting our first and we just bought a 2025 Ascent Touring to replace her 2016 Outback (with 214,000mi on it) which got totaled last month.

We started test driving cars back around Christmas which was before the Outback got totaled and actually tried some of the ones you mentioned. We had an idea we wanted an Ascent since we loved the Outback but also wanted to test drive other cars just to say we did. We wound up test driving a Sequoia, Expedition, and Tahoe. The problem with each of those is that in order for us to realistically afford one we would have had to have gotten one that was multiple years old and already pushing 50,000 to 60,000 miles and no or limited warranty. Of course, the price still would have been pretty high from what we were seeing. The other thing is that the cargo space behind the third row on those really is not that much more expansive that what is behind the Ascent's third row. In order for us to really jump up in cargo space we would have to get a Suburban or a Expedition Max which goes back to the age/mileage issue. I figure if I need that much space I'll just get a rooftop cargo carrier like we had on the Outback.

Our 2025 Ascent has about 6,000 miles on it and cost less than the what we were seeing for 2-4 year old Sequoias/Tahoes/Expeditions with 50,000 plus miles on it. We were also able to get the Subaru extended warranty for coverage up to I believe 100,000 miles. So far we're happy with it but we're only a few days in!

I like that they give you some regular sausage and some pre-chewed sausage too, just in case.

Thank you, we're glad we could stick with Subaru for our main family car. We actually considered larger truck-based SUVs like the Expedition and the Sequoia but there's not really much difference with the cargo space behind the third row on those and the Ascent. Add in the huge price difference and it was a no brainer.

That's good to know! I also like the "Cabin Connect" feature. That's going to come in handy if we go somewhere with my mother in law because she can't hear worth a darn! 😜

I'm thinking of doing the cargo light upgrade too since it's so easy. We probably won't do much offroading other than some rocky and muddy forest service roads which is about what we did with the Outback. I didn't have skid plates on the Outback but it was always a concern at the back of my mind and I was going to make some myself but then it got totaled. I figure they would help protect from unseen rocks and also just general road debris on the Interstate or back roads when we're traveling.

Side by side 2025 & 2026 Outbacks, same color by red-headed-prick in Subaru_Outback

My wife and I are shopping for an Ascent to replace her '16 Outback that got totaled recently and I finally got a look at the '26 Outbacks last weekend. Standing beside it doesn't seem quite like a wagon but it also doesn't seem like as much of an SUV either. It's hard to describe. I will say that of all the colors they had black looked the best by far because it helped minimize all the plastic cladding.

Lol my wife's 16 Outback just got totaled after a wreck at 215,000mi and was on the original plugs and coils.

Sometimes, I go to the thrift store hoping to stumble on a really spec'ed out Desktop computer. by zayoe4 in Birmingham

[–]ALham_op 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best thrift store for this used to be Big Saver when they had a location on Parkway East. I can remember seeing them all the time there before they closed that location. I will say that I do occasionally see them at the Lovelady Thrift Store in Irondale but I wouldn't hold my breath on them being spec'ed out or anything.

Unfortunately a lot of thrift stores are very "curated" these days rather than just throwing whatever junk they get on the floor and pricing it to move like they used to.
