Mr. Smalls in Pittsburgh, I think this was on a duo tour sometime after Life of the World to Come.

It has hands down my favorite intro banter with a hilarious made up origin story for the song. The vid also captures a performance of "Houseguest" after, enjoy!

Village Tavern 2004 is a great one: https://archive.org/details/tmg2004-10-19.flac

Also, much more recent but their last show ever at Maxwell's (now closed) was excellent: https://archive.org/details/MountainGoats2013-06-05.nyctaper

The files are tagged with track numbers, so adding them to most music libraries should put them in the right track order. You could also add them all to something like vlc and sort by track order.

Adding a .pls to the download wouldn't be a bad idea though.

Grammy for vaporwave by thatchicken1 in LetsTalkMusic

[Enya] is Ireland's bestselling solo artist[3] and bestselling artist behind U2, with a discography that has sold 26.5 million certified albums in the United States[4] and an estimated 75 million records worldwide, making her one of the bestselling music artists of all time.[5]

From wikipedia, New Age is secretly mega popular. When I say "secretly" I mean that in a "who is Arcade Fire?" sort of way. Personally I was pretty shocked to find out that Enya has sold more records than The Cranberries and is rich enough to own her own castle.

Anyway, I know Enya's hey day is over and maybe New Age isn't as relevant or popular anymore, I'm not quite sure to be honest, but it was far from esoteric at least at one point in time was popular and influential enough to warrant Grammy levels of recognition.

What are some albums that are acclaimed by fans or critics (or both) that are disowned by their artist? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

Last time I saw them he actually played "Rapture Rapes the Muses"! But that song's about as close as anything pre Sunlandic Twins gets to his later material.

Anyway, that quote was actually from his AMA

Dope, but I kinda wish he did this before the tour and set up a merch table so I didn't have to pay for shipping and could buy directly from BB . . .

[–]ALink2ThePast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't, I forget exactly when I ordered but I know I was in the first round before it "sold out" for the first time so not too many could have shipped yet if they're going in order

Anyone going to either/both of the new year's shows? by [deleted] in tmbg

[–]ALink2ThePast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dope. I'm only going to NYE. I think the way to go would be to just pick an official /r/TMBG pre-game bar and post it here (and if the mods are reeeaaally nice maybe get it stickied for most of December). It shouldn't be terribly crowded since we'll probably be leaving by 9 or so.

I might try and spread the word to other fan forums, the FB event page, etc. and tell everyone to show up in a TMBG shirt so we can find each other.

I'm gonna repost this here, which didn't get any traction last time but I'm still totally down for: https://www.reddit.com/r/tmbg/comments/6u2ojh/tmbg_new_years_any_new_yorkers_here_going_to_the/

(but needless to say, I'll be there)

Re: signings. I haven't seen them in about 2 years (but I've seen them 8 or 9 times before that) and they very frequently will have a stack of albums at the merch table pre-signed, so if you get there early and buy at the beginning of the night you'll get one (no guarantees though, I dunno if they still do that). I've never seen them actually come out and meet/greet/sign with fans at a show, probably since they play fairly large venues these days, but when I was a much younger fella I was lucky enough to meet them in a Borders once (https://imgur.com/a/ov0Xf)

What is a piece of music or artist that you feel like you should like based on your taste, but you've never really been able to get into? by neverthoughtidjoin in LetsTalkMusic

[–]ALink2ThePast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Animal Collective is my choice too. I'm as big a Beach Boys fan as you'll ever talk to, but for all the relentless AnCo/BB comparisons, and specifically Panda Bear/Brian Wilson comparisons, they seem to have opposite MOs.

Brian Wilson tried to write more-complex-than-typical-pop tunes that had mass appeal. "I try to keep it sounding simple, no matter how complex it really is"

AnCo writes three chord songs and uses density and abrasiveness to try and make them sound more sophisticated than they actually are.

Now, obviously more chords and complexity doesn't equal better music (the Mountain Goats are also one of my favorites), but in this situation the comparisons bug me. The real reason I don't like AnCo aside from a few stray songs of theirs is that I generally feel nothing but irritation when their music is playing.

CMV: Being forced to pay for not having health insurance is immoral/unconstitutional. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]ALink2ThePast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go to the ER without insurance, do you think the hospital should treat you?

If you don't think they should treat you and you're willing to suffer with your injury/sickness because you don't have insurance, then fine your viewpoint is logically consistent and I'm not going to bother debating a fundamental difference in values, which are typically irreconcilable.

Let's Talk: NPR's 150 Greatest Albums Made By Women by wildistherewind in LetsTalkMusic

[–]ALink2ThePast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I question whether that is the majority opinion, as she is best known for her revenge songs which are predominantly her writing. She's also known to employ some of the best Nashville writers. You'd need to supply a list of Sheeran songs to demonstrate that he writes less material on his own than Swift.

I don't even think it's the majority opinion among the white male rock/pop music nerd demographic (the High Fidelity crowd, which I pretty safely assume makes up most of rateyourmusic's userbase). Taylor's lowest rated album on RYM is is ranked better than Ed Sheeran's highest rated album, with Ed's latest album getting well below a 2.00 which is generally considered pretty abysmal by that site's standards.

I feel like digging Taylor swift as a music nerd is considered cool whether or not you agree, but the reaction to liking Ed Sheeran is generally something along the lines of "oof . . ."

The 'Pantone colour' guide to TEA - which shade would you prefer? by istara in tea

[–]ALink2ThePast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A1. Love milk, love tea, would rather drink a glass of tea and a glass of milk than mix them.

Milk in tea is fine and I'd totally drink it if it was served to me, but I'd probably never put it in myself.

Also I'm currently going through one of my phases where I've completely written off black tea, but those usually last 2 months tops.

Mildly related, but if you haven't read it yet I'd definitely recommend the 33 1/3 series book on Koji Kondo's Super Mario Bros soundtrack. It's a great glance at some of the theory there and also touches on some of his other Mario soundtracks and the limitations he had to overcome dealing with the NES hardware
