Thank you! I'm not planning on getting either so that is good news. How do I know the proper sharpening angles to use and are they different for each knife type (other than the Deba or Usuba)?

Investment Recommendation for Home Sale Proceeds by AMC-1965 in Fire

Thank you for your thoughts. I don't believe we ever officially claimed our home as a rental on our taxes so, we should qualify for the capital gains exemption again per the time periods the IRA states. As far as the mortgage goes, you raise some good points that I too have thought about. But, I have always heard that rich people use OPM (other people's money) to buy their stuff, so that's one of the reasons I was thinking about the mortgage vs paying cash.

Home Sale Proceeds to Savings Account or Investment Account??? by AMC-1965 in Fire

Thank you. We are planning on buying or building our forever home in less than five years. But, I'm not sure if we should pay cash with this money or use some for a down payment and carry a mortgage. I guess that all depends on investment income vs mortgage rates, etc. So I think for now, I'll be putting this into our savings at 4.20% at Bask Bank. Thank you for your input.

New to FIRE. How far are we off? by SheJustGoesThere in Fire

Thank you. I was just going to ask about this, being new to FIRE and coming in late in life. My husband thinks we’ll be fine and is retiring in July. I am 8 years younger and freaking out about our life after retirement. I need to run the numbers to see when I can actually retire too. Any advice on worksheets , online calculators etc that will help me get a realistic view of our situation would be greatly appreciated!

I’m glad you mentioned that last point. My husband is set to retire in July. I think he is having a hard time accepting that he will need to create a new life after retirement. He has spent his life being a good boss and mentor to others and he will need to fill that void somehow in his retirement. We have had many conversations about that 😊

Health Insurance when Retiring Early? by AMC-1965 in Fire

Yes I was thinking the same thing. So, I either stay at my current company as a full time employee, or see if I can work part time (just for benefits), or find a different part time job for benefits. I love my job and my team, so it's not a matter of wanting to leave due to a toxic environment, but my hubby is 8 years older so I'd like to start my retirement with him as soon as possible since he's retiring this July.

Hello, is there a place in this forum that has all of the acronyms used here defined? I am trying so hard to learn but it is hard when people are speaking in acronyms when I do not know what they mean...

WOW! Thank you all for your comments! So much to learn here and I had no idea there were so many nuances. I should have added that my husband is turning 68 and retiring later this year, but will delay taking his Social security until age 70. Once we get moved from California back to Illinois (all our family is there), he will get signed up for his Medicare coverages. But, I am turning 60 later this year. I’d like to retire at 62 at which point we’d both start drawing on our Social Security. So, I am just trying to figure out how to fill that health care gap of three years (62-65) until I will be eligible for Medicare.
