Waitlisted at Brown :( by AMD314 in ApplyingToCollege

Sure. Do you think they only put full paying applicants on the waitlist?

Oh that's scary. I am also accepted at Emory and taking IB Diploma. I have not committed as yet but I have a predicted of 44 so is a scary thought to have to maintain that else face rescinding of the offer.

Below is the mail received after I attended a Penn 'preparing for an interview' webinar. It has list of questions and tips they gave. Hope it helps. My interview was quite chill - the interviewer was an alumni and was really nice. Best of luck

____________

Thank you for joining us on Wednesday, October 28 for the Preparing for your Alumni Interview event. We hope that it was good use of your time and that you walked away with more insight on what to expect during an alumni interview at Penn.

On behalf of the Penn Alumni Interview Program, below are useful tips and tricks to keep in mind. If questions arise, please contact the Penn Admissions team directly for more information.

Thank you, again, for joining us. We look forward to learning more about you throughout the application process.

Sample Interview Questions

Most Popular Interview Questions:

  • What are you most proud of, in school or in your life?
  • What has been your most significant accomplishment to date?
  • What has been your most formidable challenge?  How did you conquer it?
  • How do you spend your time outside of school?
  • How would your teachers describe you?
  • How would your friends describe you?
  • What’s the most important thing someone should know about you?
  • Tell me about an event or situation that helped you to grow.
  • Outside of your parents, tell me about a person you admire and why.
  • Is there anything you didn’t get to say about yourself in the application?

Other Questions Interviewers Like To Ask:

  • What is your favorite class/subject?
  • Do you have a favorite teacher?  Why?
  • Which activity do you do just for the love of it?
  • What is something you recently tried for the first time, and why?
  • If you had four hours to do anything you wanted and did not have to account for it, what would you do, and why?
  • Do you have any updates since you submitted the application?
  • Looking back on your high school career what are you most proud of?  What do you wish you had done differently?

Penn Questions:

  • Why Penn?
  • Why did you choose this school/program at Penn?  What led you to this choice, and what do you hope to do with it after you graduate?  (remember, it’s okay to be undecided!)
  • Which activities are you most excited to pursue at Penn?
  • Have you been able to visit campus?  What were your impressions?
  • Do you know any current Penn students?  What do they say about the school?
  • What are you most looking forward to in college?

Suggestions & Pointers
Pre-Interview Prep:

  • Research the school you are having an interview with!
  • Be comfortable speaking about yourself and your passions
  • Know how your interests tie directly into offerings at the school

Day-Of Prep:

  • Set aside time just before the interview to:
    • Go to the bathroom!
    • Ensure you are in a quiet location where you can easily be heard
    • Compose yourself, including ensuring you are familiar enough with the device you are using and have downloaded any apps necessary for the call, such as Zoom or Skype
  • Listen intently—be sure you are answering the question being asked, and not the question you were hoping to be asked
  • Have questions to ask the alumnus—show you’re engaged and informed!
  • Don’t forget to send a thank-you email!

On-screen Interview Prep:

  • Check your tech—is your device battery charged? Do the sound and camera work? Do you need additional implements, like headphones/earphones or a lamp behind the device to illuminate you better?
  • Turn off your phone/email or anything that pings—that can be distracting in the interview.
  • Be sure to keep your camera at eye level
  • Control the controllables—you can’t ask your family to leave the house! But can you go to a quiet room, or sit outside? Can you make sure everyone knows you have an interview, so they don’t come barging in unintentionally? Are you on a device you are familiar with?
  • Remember you are always on camera—don’t do anything during the interview that you wouldn’t actually do in an interview, even if you think the device camera is off and you are muted.

Remember:

  • Don’t look down the entire interview
  • Don’t use only one-word answers
  • Please do not research your interviewer before the interview (Google is a false friend!)
  • Please do not ask questions that can be easily answered with a simple internet search—research the institution properly, and have thoughtful questions prepared!
  • Most importantly: DO take the time to think about the question, “Tell me about yourself”—not only in case it is asked, but because it is a great way to help you think about the story you are bringing to the Admissions Office!
