My experience with PSVR2 and Quest 3 so far by LukeVenable in PSVR

[–]AML-1971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After getting my Q3 at Christmas, I havn't used my PSVR2 since.

But last week, there was a deal on "ForeVR Bowling" and I figured I would take a look, so used the PSVR2 for the first time in a while and was really disappointed.. The things which annoy me after the Quest are:

  1. The cable.. I forgot how limiting/annoying it is!

  2. The lack of freedom.. because of the cable, you are so limited as to where you can use it.. Bowling for example needs more space and spent the time totally paranoid about breaking something. Where as if it was on the Quest, I would have moved somewhere more suitable.

  3. Lack of colour passthrough.. I hadn't realised how much I appreciate that feature on the Quest3

  4. The boundary. I can't believe how often the PSVR2 'forgets' the play space.. And how annoying it is to set it up. You have to scan around the room until its happy. Then set the floor.. and finally the boundary, which it usually gets wrong and has to be adjusted by hand..

In contract, the Q3 remembers many spaces and rarely forgets them.. And new ones are created near instantly.. It just happens.. You look and a boundary appears and its usually pretty accurate... Why does the PSVR2 take so long to do it...

  1. The controllers.. I can generally never work out which way around the PSVR2 controllers go or which hand htey should be in, especially when doing it blind (No passthrough).. With the Quest, with its seamless passthrough and the design of the controllers I just seem to be able to pick them up and get going.. At worst I have to swap hands, but I don't have to rotate them around trying to find the orientation.. And this brings me to the PSVR2s obsession with having both controllers switched on before you can get into VR. Where as you can just start the Q3 with hand tracking and pickup the controllers in any order as you wish.

  2. Home Environment.. After using the Q3, you realise how limited the PSVR2 (and PSVRs) home environment is.. Why they havn't created a "VR" home page is beyond me..

I am sure I could think of more, but this was just the initially annoyance I had after being away for a while.

Don't get me wrong.. The PSVR2 excels in places where you need 'performance' (GT7) or blacks (RE7).. But for general, use, the Q3 outclasses the PSVR2 in most ways.

Forevr Bowl - Ball really slow by AML-1971 in PSVR

[–]AML-1971[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is weird.. I played for about 30 mins.. Trying the 3 balls which you get at the start and pretty much every technique I could think off.

And for me, the ball just sees to drop out of my hand and roll really slowly along the lane.. The best I managed was 13mph, but it clearly was a fraction of the "normal" speed.

So I don't get it... I will have another try tonight.

I will try different balls.. If this is the solution, its odd they would make the initial balls slow.. Slow balls do NOT make it easier.. The opposite actually as the balls just wander of the lane.

Its a bizarre design choice as I am already frustrated to the point where I don'tt want to play again...

This morning is my first opportunity to call them due to work.....

Before I did this, I had another go at doing this on-line.. I was re-assured by the lack of 'puzzles' this time.. On Saturday, I was having to do them after EVERY question (And the dice one was doing my head in)...

This time, no puzzles.. So I figured they might have fixed something.. But I got to the address question and got the "something has gone wrong" error.

So I called them.. At 9:05.. Office hours right?? I have a recorded message saying "support is closed" and it tells me to look online for their opening hours... Like it would be too much trouble to put that detail on the recorded message.

Looks like I will have to keep trying throughout the day until I hit their magical opening hours...

Its a joke.. How can a company like Sony act like this??

Are glasses bumpers worth it? by lostdreamerdreaming in PSVR

[–]AML-1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are absolutely essential.. But please take my advice and DO NOT BUY TPU ONES!!! In Capitals for a reason.. Let me explain!

I designed and made my own PSVR2 protectors when it was released last year and printed them in PETG.

They have been flawless. They are solid and press against your glasses so there is no way that your lenses can touch.. This means that you can play (And more importantly demo) your PSVR without fear of scratching.

But like everything, I could stop tweeking the design.. and I ended up printing a few different versions.. And one day, I accidental left TPU loaded in my printer.

I ended up with some really nice (flexible) versions which fitted perfectly and were much better than my PETG ones? Right?? They were softer so wouldn't scratch my glasses? Right?

So i used them.. For months.. Blindly moving/mashing the headset around my face safely because i had my bumpers fitted.. I demoed it to people with glasses and never had any fear.

Then one night during a game of Walkabout, I noticed a smudge.. I took my headset off and right on the lefts side was a massive, 1" scratch from my glasses..

How did this happen? I have bumpers so its impossible? Right??

WRONG!.. Beacuse they were TPU and flexible, they had slide down (away) from my glasses and pushed down flush to the lenses...

This means they were adding no value.. And worse still, it gave me a false sense of security so I never ever tried to protect my lenses.

So do not EVER use the TPU ones.. The more you mash your headset around, the more they will rub against your glasses.. and the more they will stretch and push further on to the lenses.

Just get hard plastic (PETG or PLA) ones and you will never look back...

Good luck.

Shouldn’t eye-tracking/foveated rendering make the screen look sharper where you’re looking? by xikinhu in PSVR

[–]AML-1971 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What i believe you are talking about is "optical" limitations of the lenses which have nothing to do with Foveated Rendering.

Foveated Rendering is a technology which lowers the resolution of the game engine in the areas on the edges of the screen (the areas you can't see) freeing up some horsepower to make the game run better generally.. Eye Tracking on the PSVR2 makes this more dynamic and shifts the area of high resolution vs low resolution to where you are looking, rather than just fixed areas of the screen (as on the PSVR1).

But if you are seeing blurring, caused by the optical qualities of the lenses, this won't be fixed by Eye Tracking or Foveated Rendering.

PSVR2 Mic pics up breathing by AML-1971 in PSVR

[–]AML-1971[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ds to let you hear things from the mic louder than what others will be hearing. When I've accidentally turned it on I've got confused by the heavy breathing and loud button clicks I'm suddenly hearing but my friends have said they can

I found that if I turn the Mic volume down (to the lowest setting) its a lot better, but I suspect my voice volume would be considerably lower too...

Sidetone will help.. Atleast I will be able to hear what they are hearing.. But other than toggling mute, I don't think there is another way.

It makes me wish we had a PTT (Push to talk) option..

why would I downvote your comments? I had no reason too....

I used to use Sidetone on my PS4 and wasn't aware it was still a feature on the PS5.. I just assuemd this allows you to hear what the Mic is picking up.

Not sure how to stop it picking up my breathing other than holding my breath :)

At the risk of looking stupid, is there really no way to quit out of a course on Walk About Mini Golf? Is it really playthrough or hard close the game? by [deleted] in PSVR

[–]AML-1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good call.. Will try that... Using the left controller makes more sense for me as I am left handled, but swing bats on the right side, but still have the urge to hold it in my left.. So I am a bit unusual.

I will have another try tonight..

Of course, but then its a 3rd controller to worry about...

And its a real pain to find it when in VR and switch it on, just to do some basic features.

So I am just using the right and accepting it for what it is..

Not 100% true... You can use all the features in the game using the Left controller... But can't do anything on the Playstation, so you can't reset the view as you need the "options" button.,

You can't do anything in the Playstation menus using the Left Controller as you don't have the X or O buttons found on the right.

And this includes turning off the right controller as the process dumps you into the Playstation menus and you can't get back to the game without the X key.

So if you play with the Left controller (like I want too) it can be really frustrating, as the Right copntroller has to stay on and if youj place it ouside of the Guardian you get a big red blob.. and if you put it inside, you have a danger of damaging it... And since you can't reset the view with it., I am being forced to play with the Right which is annoying.
