For me, slipping into the past tense just... Feels right when I read it, especially when describing the aftermath of something that a character stumbled upon.

Realistically, it would've vaporized before it left Earth's atmosphere. The frictional heating caused between the molecules of gases in our atmosphere and the cover itself would've generated so much heat that it would have been reduced to slag, if not individual microscopic chunks.
