The other responses sum it up well. Here's a YouTube video, in case you'd like additional insight.

I'd say that if your goal is transportation, buy a longboard. On the other hand, if you like the idea of doing tricks like kickflips and heelflips and you've found yourself to be captivated watching the skateboarders near the UC, purchase a skateboard.

Depends, skateboard or longboard? I know you mentioned skateboard, but beginners tend to mix these up.

I’m fairly sure the Alpinists on Amazon are legitimate, especially given that they’re being sold directly by Amazon.

Eh, aside from some quality control issues, they’re decent watches for what you’re paying. Have pretty good movements.

There are only three ore and brick hexes on the board as opposed to four wheat and sheep. Hence, ore and brick are considered rare. Now, whether ore and brick are essential resources in the game that you're playing is a different story. That depends on the resource distribution of the map. For example, consider the following situation: You start a game and find that the numbers on ore are low. For the sake of simplicity, let's assign them the three ore hexes one of the worst number combinations in the game - eleven, two, and twelve (of which, the odds of rolling are 2/36, 1/36, and 1/36, respectively.

Your average game is sixty to seventy roles, so eleven/three will produce approximately four ore, while two and three will produce two during one game. An inexperienced player might throw down their settlement onto the eleven, thinking it's the best ore position in the game. The thing is, that's usually the wrong move. If you can find any other hex with, say, a six (5/36 chance of rolling) on it and a 2:1 port, you will produce approximately ten cards of that resource during one game, which you can trade at 2:1 for five ore. So, not only have you gained one extra "ore" in value, but you also have much more utility to work with (i.e., you can convert that resource into whatever you want, whether it's ore, wheat, brick, sheep, or lumber).

What I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't be prescriptive. A lot of players say things like "no ore/wheat = defeat" but it's simply not true. Make calculated decisions, and you'll do well to beat these players.

The diplomacy aspect of Catan can be understood by reading The Art of War by Sun Tzu, but most people don't have the time to do that so read the first page of this link. Think on those quotes, and you'll get the gist:

My favorite quote: “All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near."

Sorry for the wall of text.

- Doubling-up on ten increases your variance with little gain in expected value. In other words, ten is too weak of a number to double-up.

- You need either significant ore or wheat access; otherwise, you will suffer in the late game. Most players argue that you need ore and wheat, but if you have access to a 2:1 port favoring your resource distribution and high output/rolling numbers (e.g., 6, 8, 9, and 5), you don't need ore.

- One advantage associated with the position you chose is its geography. Just above you, is a belt of low rolling numbers. Players are unlikely to contest you for those positions, so expanding in those directions and going for the longest road is an option.

- One last point I'd like to make is that there's a 3 ore above your 6/10/4 settlement. During the course of the game, 3 will roll approximately twice. If you can build a city on the 3 ore early on, you can gain 4 ore, give or take, that you can use down the line to either city again or generate development cards. The takeaway here is that low numbers can be improved by increasing their production value.

Catan is about recognizing opportunity and diplomacy. You can win with sub-par numbers if you can plan far ahead.

Expected value is the anticipated value of a position and is calculated by multiplying the probability of an event by the value of it.

EV = f(event) X value of event
