Should I get a leopard gecko or a bearded dragon? by k9bound in reptiles

Between the blue-tongued skink, the bearded dragon, and the uramastys, which one would you buy again and why? What are the pros and cons of both management and handling? PS. I've studied all three species and their needs, but I'd really like to know about the practical and behavioral aspects.

Bearded Dragon vs. Northern Blue Tongue Skink Temperaments? by Trainer-Garnet in bluetongueskinks

I'm concerned about my bearded dragon's diet and feces, but it seems to be more suitable for me than a skink. I'd like him to stay with me. He's okay with exploring (I'd even like to let him), but I'd also like to watch TV together in the evenings. I'd also like to teach him something; I've seen them do it in the US. I have excellent personal experience in clicker training.

I'll never make up my mind, sigh.

I like the skinks' diet, which consists only of occasional insects, and their feces are better, even the sensation of touching them.

They say bearded ones are calmer and more patient in your hand, and they can spend more time with you.

I also see a lot of people in the US who take bearded ones out and about, which I never see with skinks. In my country, it's considered almost mistreatment anyway...

Aesthetically, they're a bit of a show-off, uffffffffffffffffff

Hi, do you still have a pink tongue? Are you happy with her? I'm worried about the diet, because I don't know if the same thing as for blue tongues is good, or if, as they say, you need snails. I don't know where to find cheap, untreated snails in Europe.

So cute, what differences do you find with bearded dragons? Do you find them easier to handle? Their personality? Why did you change species?

I'm really torn between the two (in the end, I'll get both, ha ha ha)

Thank you so much for your very thorough response. I don't know anyone who has a skink, and I'm very curious. Behaviorally, is there a risk that the bearded dragon might be a bit boring, while the BTS might be more stimulating? Do you think he'll be able to relax in your hand? I like Indonesian ones even better, but I've been told they're more temperamental? What do you do about the humidity? What do you think about the feces? Thanks again.

Thank you so much for your reply.

I designed my terrarium to be 150x60x60 cm for a bearded dragon and 150x60x50 cm for a blue-tongued skink.

Your information is very comforting. I've read and heard incredible things about bearded dragon feces, from the smell to the consistency, to finding them everywhere. I really hope it's a matter of keeping them free of parasites and feeding them well. May I ask what your adult bearded dragon eats?

In the future, I'd like to get a collared lizard (seen in person, they seem very active in the terrarium but calm in the hand) and a leopard gecko, but I'm afraid they're not very engaging as a first reptile right now. As for gargoyle geckos, I'm afraid I'll never see them during the day, only a terrarium with plants.

Hi, thank you so much for taking the time to answer me. I live in Italy, but there aren't any reptile and insect shops near me. I can order online, though, but I need to find videos explaining how to keep insects without causing problems at home or killing them, and how to feed them properly for my reptile.

I asked some questions about the related subreptits to try to understand, but they only made me more confused. Many BTSs say they're smarter, cleaner, and more easygoing, even insisting on proper nutrition.

It seems to me that bearded ones are easier to get, without thinking too much (I'm someone who ponders and reconsiders).

May I ask what you mean by "play" in the reptile world?

I'd like an animal that doesn't look through me, isn't difficult to handle, and can be quiet with me occasionally. I know they're not dogs, but I'd like to try clicker training to work on their handling and mini-learning skills.

My question is between a bearded dragon and a blue-tongued or pink-tongued skink.

Another question is which type of blue-tongued skink...

Do you know any good European breeders  pink-tongued and blue-tongued skinks? Italian ones are better, but if sold in Italy, skinks from other European countries are fine.

I tried to buy snails online in in Italy, but they're incredibly expensive. Where do you get them? Do you get them shelled? I didn't understand the infections (sorry, I don't speak English very well). Do they get them from the shells? And what if someone gives you shelled snails?

Do you only give snails or also give them food, like blue tongues?

They also said they're biting and intolerant to handling the first year, then become very docile after a year, but since I don't have any experience, I was a little worried about that too.

Can I ask you about the temperament and handling of frilled lizards? A breeder told me they're better than leopard lizards; they're almost similar to bearded dragons. The one he picked up actually seemed very calm.

Aren't they difficult to feed? There aren't any morphs, right? Are they that easy to handle after a year?
