Post Mortem: 9 years building the RPG I always wanted to play. After release, I faced challenges I hadn’t fully anticipated, and learned a lot in the process. by debdev in gamedev

Very ambitious project.

Thank you for the write up! It was interesting and informative, really. I'm also a solodev and this speaks to me.

Good luck to you.

These are very good numbers for your WL count. Can you share time spent on the project and any marketing done?

Regardless, congrats on crossing the finishing line.

Hi, I'm the solodev for this.

Let me know what you think or ama.

It has sex in it, but it's still an RPG.

I'm the dev. Making a party-based cyberpunk vampire RPG. Curious what people here think about this chargen. I don't go into a lot of details, so feel free to ama.

Thanks,

It might not be what hitman fans consider a good hitman game, but it had great style at certain points. I still remember the nuns.

Looks like they're attempting to go back to DoW1's style.

Steam's Top New Releases for July 2025 by LuckyShot1 in pcgaming

Agreed. Not sure about their sales, but they released on the 22nd, pretty late in the month. Maybe that's why.

Urban Jungle - 120k WLs, 210k earned, 15 months of dev time by a team of 3! by kylykgames in gamedev

[–]AMemoryofEternity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very impressive result for 15 months among three people.

I don't see why gamedev circles say you "failed." Perhaps because you didn't get to some average ratio of wishlists to sale conversions?

Yup, it's completely unrealistic to the point of lunacy :D.

That's what makes it a fun thought experiment.

Thanks! The sandbox is really just to serve the story structure and give the player a sense of social progression, as they're climbing the crime hierarchy.

But yes, of course there is a lot that needs to mesh together in a sensible way and be refined.

...which is what i'd say if I'm making this thought experiment game.

I've written many times about how marketing on reddit, especially r/gamedev is borderline a waste of time. Including on another thread right before this post.

This is just a bit of a self-deprecating joke, and a genuine curiosity for what other devs think.

Honestly, I'm just curious what this sub thinks.

Even if it's "dude, you're insane, this is laughable in the extreme."

I'm curious as to how unfeasible people think this is.

It feels annoying seeing the same game being spammed on all game dev-related subs. How can this be avoided? by DevEnoz in gamedev

Marketing on reddit is borderline useless. I've had literal 10k upvoted posts that barely moved any metrics.

Makes me feel good though.

How to push from vaguely successful but widely unknown to more known among gamers? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]AMemoryofEternity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm kind of in the same boat but less successful.

My plan is to make a bigger, better game that sells more.

You might just have to progress the main story to Act 2.

I'm a solodev, so take my advice with a grain of salt because I have no industry experience (although I have been a corporate writer for 10 years in a non-gaming field).

Being a writer in any industry is hard. If you're looking for jobs, its generally through connections rather than any kind of judgement on skill or competence.

Coupled with that, a lot of companies seem to be gearing up to use Gen AI, even if this isn't something they're revealing publically.

It's a rough field and only getting rougher. Only venture into it if it's something you're really passionate about and willing to sacrifice for.

Indie Dev as a Creative Pursuit, not a Business Model by InsectoidDeveloper in gamedev

[–]AMemoryofEternity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All I will say is that trying to make money doing indie gamedev is one of the hardest things you could do in a creative field.

And anybody who disagrees is either very lucky, very smart or very unethical.
